How do I search for all notes not in a particular stack?

stack:Gneo finds all in the stack.

I tried  -stack:Gneo  but this translated to weird results.

AFAIK, you cannot negate notebooks or stacks.

This is not explicit in the Evernote search grammar documentation (indeed, the "stack:" scope modifier is not even mentioned there), but being unable to 'negate' a notebook term is explicitly prohibited by the grammar, and stacks are treated the same as notebooks in Evernote search (they're both scope modifiers).
