I have replaced our two iPhones with newer models and cannot add the new phones to my free account.

Hi.  Depending on how many times you tried,  you may now be locked out;  but go online to https://www.evernote.com/Devices.action and revoke access to everything that you see there.  If you are successful you can try to connect with one of the iPhones.  If not you will need to wait out a month's suspension or subscribe for at least a month to get around the restriction.
