(Archived) Hiding the Activity Panel?

Is there a way to hide the Activity Panel in the lower right (directly above the ads)? It's a major waste of sidebar space.

There's a button near the lower-left corner of the main window, with an icon that looks like a gear. Click it, and you get a drop-down list of the items that are to be displayed in the application's left pane. Uncheck "activity," and you're set.

I would like to see the activity panel auto-resize dynamically to utilize the space when there is no activity. This would be especially useful on smallish 13-inch macbook monitors.
