Why would Evernote need to see, download and permanently delete my contacts for the new gmail Calendar feature?

This looks like a general entitlement for me, it does not say EN will actually make use of all functions. Such stuff is in most cases bundled  - when you are authorized to use the API, you can theoretically do all this, wether your app does it or not.

For me contacts are relevant for calendar functions like invitations, meetings and the like. And it is still your own personal EN account getting authorization, not EN in general.
