Search annotation text

Recommended Posts

This issue occurs for me in all the ways I access Evernote:

  1. Evernote v10.3.7 build 2018 public / Editor v111.0.14414 / Service v1.22.6 app on a Windows Surface Book 2 laptop running Windows 10 Pro Version 1909
  2. Evernote web interface in Chrome Version 87.0.4280.66 Official Build 640bit on a Windows Surface Book 2 laptop running Windows 10 Pro Version 1909
  3. Evernote web interface in Chrome app on Google Pixel 3a phone running Android Version 11
  4. Evernote app on Google Pixel 3a phone running Android Version 11

In the same PNG note, I added 2 text annotations using the Evernote editor:  one that says "Test" and the other that says "MBC R&D Ideas".  When I search my notes for "Test", Evernote is able to find the text annotation that says "Test".  However, when I search my notes for "MBC", "R&D", "R&D Ideas", or "Ideas", Evernote is not able to find any notes with that text.

I assumed Evernote would be able to find any text added with the annotation function in the editor, but it looks like that is not the case.

Any tips for how to maximize searchability is greatly appreciated.

I'm still strictly Legacy,  so we'll have to wait for more informed (or experienced) users to comment - I have noted that others are finding searches take time to 'activate' since they're much more server-oriented in the new versions.  If you left your annotations in place I'd suggest you go back and try again - you might find an hour or so will make the difference.  Plus (it now occurs to me) annotating a PNG might not cause the image to be re-indexed very quickly or at all - have you tried searching PDF annotations?

The text annotation I made that says "Test" using the Evernote editor was actually added after the one I added that says "MBC R&D Ideas".  PNGs are definitely re-indexed because the search found the "Test" annotation.  It does take a little time (<1 hr), but that is reasonable.  The text annotation that says "MBC R&D Ideas" was added about a week ago, but the search is never able to find that phrase or pieces of that phrase.

The notes I am uploading need to be in PNG format because they are handwritten notes.  According to this article, Evernote cannot search handwritten text in PDF notes (https://help.evernote.com/hc/en-us/articles/208314518-How-Evernote-makes-text-inside-images-searchable).  I understand that handwritten notes require quite sophisticated OCR search engines; however, I would think something faster and more accurate could be implemented for text annotation that is added using Evernote's editor.  I thought that by annotating my handwritten notes that I could ensure that Evernote's search function will find those instances, but that appears not to be the case.
