Private Notebook Not Synching after Evernote Crash

Recommended Posts

Hello,

After my Evernote Mac 6.10 crashed for no apparent reason, it re-started to synchronize and all standard notebooks and files seem to have been recovered, EXCEPT for my Private Notebook that shows only 19 files while it contained hundreds before the crash!

I was under the impression that all files of my Private Notebook were stored on my Hard Drive on my MacBook Pro? Where can one find them?

Meanwhile, since I re-started Evernote, the Blue Sync Wheel is continuously turning. My Evernote keeps crashing from time to time and at every restart, the Sync Wheel keeps turning on forever?

Meanwhile, I can still add normal files to my Evernote on IOS and iMac versions and they do synchronize on all my devices.

Should I quit Evernote and re-install it to retrieve all my Private files in my Private Notebook or any other way?

Thank you for any assistance with this VERY disturbing situation.

I gather your Mac crash corrupted the EN database
EN rebuilt the database from the servers

By "Private", do you mean "Local" notebooks

By definition, Local Notebooks are not synced to the EN servers
The only copy is on your Mac, and you are responsible for backups

There is no special location; the Local notes are stored in the common database

Sorry, I can't see a recovery method if you have no backups

>>Should I quit Evernote and re-install it

This would be my recommendation, but it still doesn't help with the local notebooks
I would delete the app, and database

Reinstall and let the database be rebuilt from scratch
Note: The rebuild does not include Local Notebooks or unsynced notes

Thank you for your quick reply.

I guess I have a lot to learn more about Evernote.

Yes, I realize that my Private Notebook was "LOCAL", but I did not expect that the files were in a database and I would not know where to look or how to back it up anyway.

Thanks again.

Actually backup is easy on the Mac
Select the notes, then File > Export
Notebook info is not retained so most users do a separate export for each notebook

I have this scripted to run weekly (documented here)

By the way, since I do have regular Time Machine Back-Up on an external Hard Drive, is there a way that I could retrieve the Evernote Database and get back my Private Files saved on the Local Notebook?

Thank you.

Yes. a restore from TM backups is possible
It's not the recommended approach but it can work

Step 1

  • Locate your databaseUntitled.jpeg.a094193dde75eff1c4b66625c78fa6df.jpeg
On My Mac, I click on About Evernote, and press the option key
A link to the database folder appears

You will have a folder named as a number, like 1234567

Step 2

  • Turn off syncing or disconnect from the internet
You don't wnat to impact the server data
  • Close Evernote
  • Rename this folder, or move it to a safe location like your desktop

Step 3

  • This is the folder you want to retrieve from the TM backup
    Once you have this restored
  • - Start Evernote
  • - Eport your local notebooks

Step 4

  • Close Evernote
  • Restore your saved database folder to the original location
  • Start Evernote
  • Import your local notebooks
  • Start syncing/Internet

Awesome. It all worked very well with your solution, together with the help of Evernote Support team that has also been extremely helpful.

Thank you again for your kind assistance and expertise.

My local folder has got back its 140 private files. Awesome!

I will definitely start backing up my local notebook from now on and try figuring out your script to automate the process.

Best regards

Frederic
