  1. I work between desktop and mobile a lot.

One of the things I do on my mobile, is to put down my thoughts before the start of each day. They go into a list. Then I go through the list, reordering the list items, creating elaboration under nested lists, sometimes highlighting certain points.

The thing is, it's really hard to do so on the mobile app (iPhone). There's no drag-drop of list items unlike on Desktop. It's hard to select multiple list items while controlling the selection cursor precisely.

How do you guys manage using Evernote on mobile? It feels so much like a desktop app slapped onto a mobile screen. Any tips and suggestions?

The product head was very active on here, up until things started to get super toxic. He is now interacting with users primarily on X where things are less reactive.

That's just ... running away from the problem. Wouldn't people just voice their grievances on X instead?

And it'd be worse because then Evernote's PR releases on X will be peppered with negative comments, hurting Evernote's image.

are they instantly giving out discounts upon cancellation or do you have to wait for a separate email/notif?

For the 40% discount, if you head to Account Billing and cancel your renewal, it should appear right before the confirmation prompt. If it doesn't appear (I'm sorry) then you should be able to reverse your cancellation decision as well.

At any rate, your subscription privileges will run its full 1 year course, regardless if you have an active recurring payment for the next payment year.

As for the 50% and 60% discounts, those are only for accounts who have no active subscription plans. This includes both new accounts as well as accounts whose paid subscription have expired.

You really put an effort in documenting stuff, where I say who cares. It’s a 1st year offer only.

I easily spend more on a nice dinner, than the total rebate we discuss here „ad exzessum“.

@PinkElephant Effort is going Gmail and searching for Evernote in:trash. As compared to someone trying to post remarks in every single thread for nearly a decade.

Anyway costs aren't a factor for me. For your dinner analogy, I too get more credit card rebates on a single month's meal spending, than what Evernote costs in a year.

Worse, they are offering 50% off new subscriptions. A huge discount to folks who do not currently use the program, but at the same time turning around and charging those of us that already subscribe even more?? I understand that you trying to tempt more users in, but it really feels like a snub to those of us who have already supported the product. Why not offer a bit less discount to those just joining and then at least keep the current rate for those who already have a subscription?

You clearly don’t value current customers!

    Returning customers get 40% off.

It was only today that it became 50%. Tbf it's only 10% more.

It's amusing how often they're spamming me with the offers though. From bottom up, the frequency of emails sorta escalated

hmm, this is not what I experience... When I open the same note on my PC and my phone, both can change the note concurrently...

Could AlbertR be referring to split-second simultaneous edits near the same area of text?

I presume the 'room' opens and closes really fast to avoid blocking other clients, and the 'room' is localized to a small edit area (per line/block?). I guessing something like concurrent edits on multiple clients on the same line of text (or worse, the same word) would run into issues?

For a while I was stunned and thought this was referring to Make (e.g. GNU Make) 😂. Would be pretty hardcore.

  7. I feel there are 2 kinds of support requests.

    Bugs, and non-bugs.

Non-bug related support requests are pretty straightforward. Responses come in reasonable time, and usually there is a resolution, no matter how shoddy the resolution is. (I had my subscription prematurely terminated for weeks, and all I got was an additional 10GB quota for 1 month - when I don't use more than 1 MB a month).

    image.png.6011dc3ef492f538189d36c163b29512.png

Bug-related support requests ... well good luck on those. Support 1) might not understand what you're referring to, 2) might consider the case resolved because they couldn't reproduce your issue no matter how many diagnostics or evidence you've provided, 3) might provide pointless template answers, 4) might leave you hanging for weeks and months while 'our team investigates the issue', 5) eventually close the ticket anyway without resolution.

    image.png.8f4a092360e41544321dfa86d7ee7791.png

This was such the case since 2012 when I first subscribed till 2023.

I would also say that such support interactions are common to other apps and isn't unique to Evernote. But other apps would usually fix the technical issue within the year in a stealth upgrade. Evernote ... I have had issues unresolved for years. Including a similar problem as OP since day 1 of Tasks release.

  8. Notion doesn't have offline mode, while NoteJoy doesn't have offline mode on its mobile apps.

I'm using OneNote as my "last resort" option. It's rock solid and I've been using it as my main app for half a year now. Recently I'm also evaluating Craft if it can replace OneNote.

Unfortunately, both OneNote and Craft don't have good ways to import EN content. It was not a problem for me as I regularly curate my notes to ~50 notes. So I could manually copy-paste things over.

Removing offline from the comparison matrix when evaluating other platforms certainly changes EN's value prop and opens up a lot more options.

Thing is, a lot of competitors claim they support Offline mode, but they

    • don't explicitly tell you which notes have or have not been downloaded. We are led to assume it is "everything"
    • don't explicitly tell you that offline mode is supported on Desktops, but not on Mobile (NoteJoy)
    • don't explicitly tell you that offline mode is for text. Attachments have to be manually downloaded (NotesNook, Craft)

I'm not saying we need the resolution of detail that Evernote provides regarding offline download status. But we can't really know for sure if everything's really downloaded in the other apps, either.

  10. I think it's best not to rely on Tasks - there's just too many bugs (and often hard to replicate) that it's not effective or worthwhile to continue submitting bug reports for. Tasks that ended up with different recurrent dates and completion status on different devices - and getting Alert notifications for the wrong datetime, etc.

I have since used the default iPhone tasks, especially they are Siri-enabled, works great on Apple Watch, has no syncing issues, and can auto-recognise text like 7pm or next day etc.

Actually, I'm surprised at the similarities in offered features between Evernote and NoteJoy. They also offer Nested Netbooks and Nested Tags, which Evernote hasn't gotten around to providing, though I know these features have been requested. On the minus side, I noticed that their web clipper only works with Chrome and FireFox, which would complicate my life, given that I use Safari as it works best under macOS.

The list of NoteJoy features is at:
    https://notejoy.com/features

    NoteJoy doesn't have offline mode.

Since you mentioned you use iPhone, presumably you may travel to areas where you have a network deadzone and there is little to none data availability.

  12. It's not possible to convert a Note Link preview from text-mode to content-mode.

I can insert Note Links and they will default to content-mode previews. But if they were originally (or changed to) text-mode previews, it's not possible to change them to content-mode previews.

The only workaround so far, is for me to delete the Note Link and reinsert them again, thereby defaulting to content-mode previews.

May be, thanks for the confirmation.

Its just that iCloud Drive sync is (at least for me) integral to several workflows, and therefore can’t be turned off easily. However I don’t experience EN to be slow when syncing, even with iCloud Drive enabled.

    image.thumb.png.5106f4e8e20715bfebcd813f0f86aec1.png

I'm not sure what Evernote is syncing with iCloud for, as Evernote does have its own servers. Does it really store anything there? As a result, I think turning it off shouldn't affect any other app that uses iCloud?

  14. I think there's been some new features in the pipeline already, either in beta or under development (see Ian Small's blog update). Assuming no major disruption from a vision or manpower perspective, Evernote should be business as usual to end Q1 2023, beyond which we will start to see Bending Spoon's influence coming through in the form of their new product updates.

I admit I'm a little concerned that Bending Spoon's a multimedia app company, and wondering how that might influence the direction of Evernote's design. But their app looks sleek - and they are startup-ish - so maybe some of that energy and talent will positively improve Evernote's culture as well.

Will I switch away from Evernote? Not any more than how I felt pre-Bending Spoon. I still can't find any viable alternative to Evernote. And there's really no major, convincing push factor that's driving me away from Evernote.

So I'll stay. Unless some app comes along with overwhelming pull factors that attracts me with dazzling new features.

You should avoid early retirement of the app.

The note first needs to sync. Leave the note using the green checkmark. Then as long as it has a green triangle in the notes list, the sync has not yet happened.

To speed it up you can use the "sync now" option in app settings, synchronization.

If I press the Sync Now option, do I need to wait for the Sync Complete popup, or can I proceed to minimize the app? (e.g. switch app or lock screen)

As in https://bear.app/ ? If you've also tried https://www.notion.so/ I'd be especially interested in your thoughts about them both, assuming you are using the latest IOS/Mac versions of everything Evernote...

Notion does not support offline notes (which is a subscription tier feature in Evernote).

Lack of offline support would be quite a problem, especially since sync/connectivity problems were already causing Evernote issues.

  17. According to Apple AppStore Subscriptions page, my Evernote Personal subscription ends on 19 September 2022.

But my Evernote clients (Mobile, Desktop, Web) claim I am on Evernote Free, and forced me to logout of all clients except 2 (Free limitation).

My Apple Bill invoice says I subscribed on 20 September 2021. I should still have 1 month left in my Evernote Personal!

Heck, even the Evernote Forum side tag says I should still have an active subscription!

  18. Recently I've been thinking how can I optimize Evernote's performance (esp Sync), and one thing I thought about, is the number of Notes that Evernote can handle.

Does anyone know how many Notes is Evernote optimized to handle, while still staying fast (wrt. to Sync, Editing, Crash, Responsiveness)?

And what are some steps one can take, in spite of having many notes?

Also, does reducing the number of notebooks toggled in Offline Downloads help with syncing speed?
