  1. What's faster? Scrolling down a vertically stunted window trying to find the right note, or the eye flickering down an immediately visible list? A no-brainer as far as I'm concerned. How many other apps do you know that allow no more than half a dozen results on their most-important list? Only PersonalBrain v5.x, as far as I recall. By the time they got to v6.x, the penny finally dropped and they increased the height of the incremental search results, at the expense of a bit of real estate in their beloved Plex. All the rest started off with the notion that a tall tree or list is the way to go. Only one problem with the current VerticalListView registry fix. I can't make the list window any narrower than shown, probably because it isn't possible for the search field to slide under the "Notes by ..." dropdown list, as maybe it should: Notice my Notebook titles are as short as possible, and to give myself even more room for the Note pane when using EN in a normal (not maximized) window, I've even dispensed with the Tags column, which I now find superfluous to my needs (of course, others find it very useful). On balance, both horizontal and vertical list views are valuable according to one's own need, and at times one might want to switch effortlessly between them in order to display a greater or lesser number of columns in the List pane. The number of columns available in this pane in horizontal view puts EN ahead of all the opposition, which probably accounted for its initial design. I don't think it's gilding the lily to offer both layouts to the user.

  3. First, from the Windows User Guide: I find it's unnecessary to hold Ctrl down as simply left-clicking the hyperlink is enough to activate it. Also, Ctrl+Enter has no effect for me, even when the caret is within the hyperlink. All that Ctrl+K and Ctrl+Shift+K do is add a URL to highlighted text to create/edit a hyperlink; they do not assist editing its title. Creating a hyperlink is tedious enough, but editing the title is worse. It's tricky editing the title of an existing hyperlink in EN without damaging the link itself. Ctrl + Shift + F9 is a difficult shortcut to remember, awkward to implement, and only deletes the hyperlink as far as the caret, which is not made clear in the User Guide. Far easier to highlight the whole link and press Del. I suspect this is what most users do anyway. Why not simplify things by having one shortcut key (Ctrl+K) for Create/Edit Hyperlink? If there's no existing hyperlink under the caret, open a dialog box with two fields, Title and URL, where one can paste in the respective values, then click OK. Same with editing a link; the box opens and one can freely edit the title or link without damaging the other. This also removes one submenu from the context menu. Positioning the caret over an existing link and pressing Del, or maybe Ctrl+Del, should be sufficient to delete the whole link (with optional confirmation popup). I find dragging to highlight text tiring and error-prone. Where possible, positioning the caret over a finite area of text such as a word, sentence or link, should be sufficient to identify it to the application and appropriate actions taken. Thank you for considering this suggestion.
  4. I was going to post that there are more posts on this much needed feature, including one by me, but searching on verticallistview or even HKCU brought up nothing. Hopeless search engine. Even Google does a better job. Anyway, I finally found mine here.

You can do it yourself using a 3rd party script or macro language such as AutoHotkey such that when it recognizes that EN is open, i.e., a window containing Evernote in its title is on top, pressing Ctrl+N not only creates a new note but appends an F2 command. A bit of a kludge, but handy if you are doing this all the time. HTH
  6. Frankly, I don't understand all this fuss over "mind maps". Let's get one thing straight first. Are we talking about the traditional, over-hyped, single-parent "radial" mind map made popular by Tony Buzan, as in Mind On Track? Or are we talking about a "network" design that allows one to create hierarchies of parent/child notes with multiple links between them? Taking radial mind maps first, their only real claim to fame is that a user should be able not just to allocate children of the central topic like spokes on a wheel, but also to spatially cluster said children meaningfully (afaik only Mind Manager does this properly) as well as have subchildren (descendants) coming off them. If we make a cut in this "wheel" and straighten it out into a vertical line, we end up with a simple outline. EN already provides this in the form of a hierarchical tag list. You could allocate one tag per note if you wish. If you are hell bent on creating a mind map, by all means do so using some other app, and keep a screen capture program handy (I use Jing) to make copies of your map and update the existing one already stored in your Note as you edit it in your mind mapper app. As far as "network" type mind maps go, with proper multiparent trees, etc. you can also create one in EN using keywords and/or tags. See my post here with valuable contributions made by May, JBenson2, gazumped and others. No matter how eloquent your mind map is, it becomes impossible to view it all together (a fundamental requirement) after it reaches a certain size, so you might as well accept this and create several "views" (PersonalBrain attempts this), storing screenshots in EN. At heart, EN is a card file, aka "flat file" database, like a Rolodex, but encrusted with added bells and whistles such as stacks and tags. Trying to graft on mind mapping features would be to compromise on speed and basic efficiency.

  8. How peculiar. In similar apps, when I select "New Note" or equivalent, I usually get taken to a 1-line note title field to be typed in, then when I hit Enter, I am taken to the note editor (content) field to begin entering text or whatever. But not in EN. Pressing Ctrl+N takes me straight to the note content field, where I am expected to enter the note's title, then I click the title field and the title gets copied there. However, I side with those who don't require the first line of note content to duplicate the title; rule #1 of database design is don't duplicate data unnecessarily! Well, ok, I guess it helps those who are in a hurry and are happy for the title to mirror the first line of data, such as a date. But it soon becomes a royal PIA: If I clear the title from the note content (after clicking the note title field to copy it there), leaving it empty, then click another note on the list, the title of the newly created note reverts to Untitled note. So it seems one cannot create a titled, but empty note. If I create a new note, type "hello" in the content, click the title field to make this the title, then change "hello" to "stupid" in the content field, after 30 seconds without entering further data, the note title changes automagically to "stupid". Can this "feature" be disabled? See also this thread from 2010. Seems nothing has been done about it. Isn't there some way I can prevent the title from changing on me like this? (Added) Solution: Avoid this mess altogether by creating a node named #Template (preceded by the hash sign # to float it to the top of the list). Every time you want a new note, Copy it to the same (or another) Notebook. Then just edit the title. Done.
  9. FWIW, I was initially impressed with Clearly until I discovered it was nothing but an overlay (like a filter) on top of the main page. As a result I've dumped Clearly and gone back to what I used to do, namely either highlight selected paragraphs and paste as plain or rich text, or save the whole page as an MHT file using UnMHT, a Firefox plugin. A better alternative if available is to look for a link to a printable version of the same page, and download that instead. I'm against bloating up EN with embedded Web pages. Instead, I installed Path Copy Copy, adjusted the options so that Copy Internet Path appeared in Explorer's RH context menu, then when I wanted to look at a web page or any other text file I'd downloaded and stored on my hard drive, I'd use Path Copy Copy to grab its local url (in the form of file://C:/[filepath]), then paste it directly into an EN Note. Thus, instead of appearing in EN, the Web page appears in my browser, with all the added plugins that can take advantage of it.
  10. I agree with the others. Having just started using EN, I was disappointed to see no vertical list view. This would help power users who appreciate being able to see a long list of note names at a single glance. Please make this a priority.
