Casa, I didn't like the change either. I tried many workarounds and settled on one which is posted here:

Finally some good news..., version 10.13.1 has fixed the problem (at least so far).

Thanks @PeteMacca. Your workaround makes me wonder whether those NOT suffering from this are, like me, those that regularly reboot their phones. I turn mine off overnight so start each day afresh. So effectively I restart the app at least once a day and my OCD means I will clear out the recent apps view from time-to-time so the same result.
Maybe not, @agsteele. I also turn my phone off each night as well. But I still need to restart the app before I can edit a note. Hoping the next release will fix it for good.

As Icc said yesterday, version 10.13 does NOT fix the problem. However, this workaround still works:
Workaround for Android:
1. Close the app - swipe them off the screen from the "recent apps" view.
2. Restart the app - hopefully you can edit a note again. If not, repeat step 1.

A trick that works today will maybe fail tomorrow.
Or..., EV could a give us the option of choosing how our notes are formatted.

There is a workaround by adding a <space> in front of each checkbox.
Funny thing this... When EV first introduced this change, a <space> worked for me. But after a week or two, and probably after another update, the <space> was striped out, changing checkboxes back to checklists. At the time, I noticed others here reported the same. So I switched to using a <->. Now the <space> is back. I'm getting whiplash!

Just started having this problem too, after trying a web-clip from WorldCat. The clip said "success!" then the app crashed. On my laptop, Evernote had not done the clip. Since then, cannot open any notes: they show on the screen for about 3-4 seconds, during which time I can't scroll past the initial display, and then the app crashes.
Hope this gets fixed soon!
Have you tried clearing storage and cache in app settings? This worked for me.

Same problem here, running 10.7.2 on Android 11.
Fixed it by clearing storage and cache in app settings.

This works, thanks!
Glad it works. It's good to have some control back!

To create a list of checkboxes that doesn't go crazy when you hit <enter>, try this:
Simple list
-[]<space>simple 1<enter> or -<checkbox>simple 1<enter>
Item list (indented)
<indent>-[]<space>item 1<enter> or <indent>-<checkbox>item 1<enter>
Works with Windows and Android. Using the dash <-> (or another character) is key to this working. I tried using a <space> before the checkbox, but Evernote stripped it out and converted the list to a
checklist.- 2

Sadly, there are only a few of us who feel the changes made to the behaviour of checkboxes was a dumb move.

I always felt strikethrough should be an option for any checkbox / list.
Joe, I agree. I would like to choose whether strikethrough is shown or not. By having the formatting of the boxes / list determined by what type of "carriage return" you use is not all that smart.

It easily converts any list with checkboxes to a checklist, including strikeout. But if you add a „space“ in front of the checkbox at the start of a line, it does not see it as a list any longer, and conserves the checkbox without converting it. Laborious, but currently the only workaround I know.
I've not been able to convert my checklist back to a list with checkboxes - probably due to the bulleted list and indenting in which it is found. It'll just be easier to live with it.
If I was to create another list with checkboxes, I found you can use the "Shift-Enter" key combination at the end of each line. No need for a "space" before the checkbox.

This new strikethrough feature on checkboxes is a big fail. I have a long list of hundreds of items (some checked, some not) that I've been building over the years..., and now it looks like a dog's breakfast.

Dave-in-Decatur, it works!

Dave-in-Decatur, thanks for the heads up about the COLLECT DOCUMENTS settings. I didn't know it was there. I will turn on notifications, and give EN permission for the camera again and hope it works.

Blocking and turning off notifications from the app wouldn't stop the background processes from analyzing the photos anyway, right?
Yeah, Brownlegion..., you're probably right. Which is why I also denied EN permission to my camera. I didn't use that feature anyway.

Put me down as another disgruntled user. After poking around in Evernote for a way to disable this truly intrusive feature, and finding none..., I used the sledgehammer approach.
On Android >> Settings >> Sound & notification >> App notifications >> Evernote >> Block all = On.

I'll vote for anything that helps with the formatting of the notes!

No..., that wasn't what fixed the issue for me. I was signing in via email and password.
Clearing storage and cache fixed it at the time.
Also, later updates fixed it.
