  1. Exactly same here. Issue started this morning. Replicates on iPhone iOS version 16.7.1 AND 16.7.2. Also same on my iPad (running latest iPad OS 16.7.2). I’ve tried:

    • signing out and signing in on iOS Evernote app;
    • deleting & reinstalling Evernote app, and
    • updating Evernote app on both iPhone and iPad to latest version.

None of these have worked. Currently no announcements by Evernote on Twitter nor on Evernote Status page.

Currently impossible to use Evernote on either iPhone or iPad. Great work, guys.

  2. Another nasty surprise from Evernote today. Common workflow is to snap photos on iPhone into Evernote. Then annotate image in Evernote on Windows  device. Noticed now when saving this image to Windows desktop (to attach to email), it is still HEIC (iPhone photo format) and can't see any option in Evernote to save/export as a JPG.
I'm sure there's a way of doing this (without using separate/online conversion software) - must be being blind - can anyone help?

On Mac v10.4.3 I can't find a keyboard shortcut to switch from note list to editor. I can Cmd + \ and jump from editor to note list but not the other way around. I've tried tabbing through but it goes around all the navigation, never into the note editor.

I really don't want to have to use mouse, plus this is an a18y issue. Please help.

+1 for this. You used to be able to go note list => editor with Cmd & L, Tab. But they've removed Cmd & L from latest version. Been desperately searching for a way to do this but no dice. That's progress.

  4. My preferred "All Notes" view option is Side List.

However each time I restart PC and fire up Evernote it starts in Snippet View. I have to switch to Side List and re-do my preferred column layout each time. Only happens when PC restarts (no issue closing/reopening Evernote without PC restart).

I know how to Remember View Settings for individual Notebooks - how do you do it for All Notes?

I use Evernote extensively on my Mac, iPad Pro, and iPhone. We use shared notebooks in my office and I have a ScanSnap Evernote Edition sitting on my desk. (I even have Evernote desk accessories sitting next to the scanner.) I'm pretty well immersed in the world of Evernote.

However, I've found myself turning to other tools, most recently OneNote, with greater frequency. The main issue, and it is a big one for me, is the fragmented and inferior support for note taking and PDF editing in Evernote. I use my iPad Pro with Apple Pencil extensively. There are some great Pencil-compatible apps for iOS, including Notability, PDF Expert, and OneNote.

Evernote, on the other hand, is stuck with a strange and fragmented approach:

PDFs can by opened using the "Annotate" tool in Evernote, which I think is built around the remnants of Skitch. It's fine for adding arrows and icons, but terrible (unusable) for handwritten notes on PDFs. It really can't be used for anything more than simple highlighting -- certainly not detailed annotation or note taking.

Drawings and notes can be added to an Evernote Note directly through the handwriting tool, but this simply inserts an image into the note. There's no way to use this tool to take notes over multiple pages, or to use it for annotation as far as I can tell. I've also found it to the buggy, with full pages of notes lost if you switch away from Evernote to another app before saving the image and returning to the normal notes view. I will say that that, though the tool is very limited, with very few options, the Pencil support works well and writing is fluid. This tool seems to have the most potential for future development.

Finally, there is Penultimate -- a separate app I want to love but is just too buggy, too limited, and too walled off from the rest of Evernote to be truly useful. Again, no support for importing PDFs/annotation, yet another approach to handwriting, and, though the Penultimate notes live in Evernote, nothing can be done with them in the main app.

Why, at this stage, would Evernote have three separate, incompatible and incongruous approaches to annotation/note taking, none of which begin to match the functionality of some of the other apps named?

Attached PDFs can certainly be opened in other apps, such as PDF Expert, but there is no way to get the annotated PDFs back into an Evernote note without deleting the original attachment and reattaching the PDF. That's cumbersome, and annotation seems like pretty basic functionality that Evernote should offer.

Evernote certainly has some broader advantages over OneNote, but really needs to explore something like the "canvas" style approach used by OneNote. The ability to "print" PDFs to a OneNote page and then markup the document itself and take notes/add text/etc. all on one page is invaluable. I've pretty much switched all note taking/PDF annotation to OneNote, with Evernote still used for project management and other organizational needs, which leaves me with my own fragmentation.

Maybe I'm missing something in Evernote's approach, but I'm a longtime user that's completely frustrated with Evernote's inferior support for annotation and handwritten notes.

2.5 years since this was posted. Still waiting.

  6. Exactly 2 years since this post created. How hasn't this been implemented yet?  Any update on timeline to implementation?

Evernote great if you want to use Apple Pencil to draw on blank sheet (in-note handwriting feature, Penultimate) but annotating pictures/PDFs with Apple Pencil is a nightmare. Clunky, unpleasant user experience.

Bizarre because that's what I use Apple Pencil most for. iOS has this natively while OneNote, PDFExpert, Notability, GoodNotes etc now all do this perfectly. Why not Evernote?

  7. Hi all

Really simple question: if I'm writing in a note and want to switch focus to the note list and go up/down, what is the keyboard route?

And vice versa, say I select/highlight a note in note list how do I quickly jump the cursor into that note to edit with they keyboard? (Rather than clicking in the note with the mouse)?

    See my beautiful diagram below.

I think it may involve the Tab key but not sure...

    Thanks!

  8. Hi All

Quick one - for some reason can't find the shortcut to quickly toggle to the add tag box. I.e. to quickly add a tag when you're typing in a note without having to use the mouse to move the cursor up to the tags box. What is it?  (see attached screenshot for example...!)

Can't seem to find it here https://help.evernote.com/hc/en-us/articles/208313358-Keyboard-shortcuts-in-Evernote-for-Mac...

    Best
