  1. OK, this persistent daily pestering to update - which is HIGHLY unprofessional and actually serving as a daily reminder to find something better than EN - has finally pushed me over the edge.  That and the cutesy bug fix lists, 'hello [your name here] and all the other ridiculous baloney.  I may need something outside the google ecosystem but it's frankly unlikely and the existing set is beautiful and logical - two words I could never ever use about EN.  I'll keep it for a while, but it's time to go and mute certain pink and gazumping trolls with their "EN's great, just take the meds like us!" leitmotif.  So long - what a relief.

  2. Thanks for the tips, PinkElephant.  I can't help thinking this is a step backward since the previous workflow was reasonably effortless/automated - but I've got used to this with 'Evernote 10'.  Sadly it no longer even surprises me greatly, but I am still baffled at the thought-processes of the management and may need to study some old Dilbert cartoons for further insights and light relief.

  3. I continue to have difficulty with scansnap 1300i and Evernote 10.42.7, everything on latest versions due to complete Windows 10 rebuild.  Scan to evernote (document) produces the error 'Failed to start up Evernote for Windows'.  This did not happen with legacy Evernote and legacy Scansnap manager.  My slightly unsatisfactory but totally effective solution is to use a 'legacy machine' running Windows 10 and legacy scansnap + Evernote.  Is there a better way - do I need to bin the (perfectly functional) 1300i to get support?  This functionality is important to me.

  4. How is this done?

On Android (version unknown, the instructions for finding version https://help.evernote.com/hc/en-us/articles/360053951413-Locate-app-version don't work for me, no such option exists and 'update' is not available on play store).

I don't have this 'massively reduce the size' option AFAICT despit being on a Personal paid tier.

Agree with OP!  Why is it ok to remind me of my name and morning/afternoon etc when I want to look at notes, even 'small'?  Heard of 'screen real estate?'

I despair every time I try to do the simplest thing on Evernote.

  5. Err... I guess you did not read my post.

    • I referenced the very same post in the very same thread myself.
    • I gave an example, complete with snip/screenshot, of a third party pdf (Fama & French 1992) with no 'text layer' that used to be searchable (and indeed still is) in my Evernote Plus.  It is no longer searchable if uploaded last week, for instance.  But the old upload under Plus still is searchable.  And that is true of uploads done well after the thread we both referenced.
    • You say "It may be possible to search in a pdf that contains a text layer when it is uploaded. I can't try, don't have a Plus account." - but I provided an example, done today (Holly 2011).  Yes, it is possible in that case.

I have many hundreds of examples the same: 3rd party pdf and my own scans, no text layer, searchable under Evernote Plus.

So you want to blame the intern?   Hilarious.

No, the unicorn-intern was right: image-only pdf was searchable under plus until about two years ago.  Then it was taken away.  No kidding.

  6. This is not correct.  I have only ever had Plus.  The feature existed in basic scanned pdf using e.g. Fujitsu scansnap.  It was removed without fanfare a couple of years back, roughly.  This is not nice of Evernote but that is how it is - they can do as they please.

To be clear: Plus is an 'old' tier and no longer available, used to have a nice mix of features at a decent price... even Jill Duffy agreed on that score.

This link shows search in pdf was not/is not in Plus, as Pink Elephant says:

However this info is incomplete, as PinkElephant says, it depends on the 'text layer'.  I have many examples scanned without OCR AFAIK on Fujitsu scansnap which show on a Plus account (the only sort I have ever had):

    • it used to be searchable inside all pdf including  'old style image-scanned' pdf
    • it is no longer searchable inside 'old style image-scanned' pdf ('no text layer' ?) - this feature has been removed from Plus (I had a response on this topic from someone but cannot find it sorry)
    • it is still searchable inside character-based pdf ('with text layer'?)

An examples are two library docs loaded to a note, doc not scanned by me.  The snip below show a search on 'Holly'. it is found and hence highlighted (a) in title (b) inside the pdf.  This continues to work on Holly - despite the reference/link above, but makes sense with what PinkElephant says if it has a 'text layer' (I guess it does). This continues to work as shown (search on 'Holly'):

    image.png.15985d128ee14eb18495854e7f0d852d.png

The following no longer works as shown for a search on fama 1992 XLVII (as it did in 2018, see edit date) for a new upload/note of the same pdf in 2022 - this feature has been deleted from Evernote Plus (shame on Evernote)

  7. I am new to this thread and have not read it all.

However I have just experienced 'unable to open file' after scanning in from scansnap to 10.9.10

    But only larger files!

Investigating, I found the attached file did not have pdf extension.

I was able to rename it 'in place' with a right-click.  Just adding .pdf on the end.

I could also then using the ... change default view to 'all pages'.

I now see my entire 40-page pdf when I preview or open it.  Just what I wanted.

Has someone else already said this, in the thread?  Don't know.

  8. This was reported and discussed at length in a previous forum post dating from 21 Dec: "continuous-release-note-pop-up" (meaning 'daily popup', not continuous obviously) https://discussion.evernote.com/forums/topic/132862-fixed-in-version-106-continuous-release-note-pop-up/page/2/?tab=comments#comment-602026

In that thread, staff member Shane D on 30 Dec (yes, a full 9 days later) declared "we are aware of this issue, are able to reproduce it, and are working to fix it as quickly as we can."  He marked it solved.  It was not solved.  He renamed the thread ungrammatically as well - maybe he did not like the perky 'you are up to date! popup' title.

Other users in that thread reported support tickets being closed without the bug being fixed.

On 13 Jan (yes, 2 weeks later) he chipped in "This issue has been fixed in our most recent release, Version 10.6, you can download here. This thread is now closed. If you have any questions, or a new issue to report, please start a new thread.

Which is odd because today is the 17th, and Evernote is still telling me (unprompted, daily, or on request) 'you are up to date with version 10.5.7'.

We have all been enrolled in a kafka-esque beta program without consent by an organisation that does not understand how to do software.

It kind of makes you want to *strongly dislike* an organisation that renames threads, marks them solved, and closes them.... plus leave something as simple as a very annoying (and potentially automated-process-disruptive, or presentation-disruptive) popup for a frickin' month.

What planet do these people live on, and what are they smoking?

I discussed this with a well-known tech magazine's Evernote reviewer who wrote (amazingly) a long and interesting reply about declining management quality.  And, basically - 'why not look at alternatives - I am'.

    Great idea.

  9. Evernote support tell me today wednesday:   "According to our development team, Evernote version 10.6 has started rolling out this morning. For future updates, please visit this article: Evernote release notes  Thank you for your patience."

They also previously told me "the issue should fixed on the next update of Evernote version 10.6."

Sadly the release notes are still for 10.5.7, but one can hope 10.6 will solve this.

  10. I emailed a contributing editor at a technology magazine a few days back about this topic - he has reviewed Evernote more than once.  He gave a detailed and thoughtful reply - amazing considering I just emailed him cold.  Two practical points:

    1) just like Evernote helpdesk, she suggests going back to the legacy version both on Windows and Mac - you get manual sync and no popups.  https://help.evernote.com/hc/en-us/articles/360052560314-Install-an-older-version-of-Evernote

    2) there's a much less feature-rich but open-source and 'bring your own storage' project called joplin which he is 'impressed by after testing competitors' - FWIW throw that into the huge mix of competing offerings if you feel really exceptionally brave  <facepalm>.  "It’s really easy to use, but underwhelming compared to Evernote’s features"

Being on the 'plus' tier (since abolished) I don't mind paying the smaller fee, so may stick with it for a while.

Going back to legacy version now - I didn't enrol on a beta testing program which is what this seems to be.

It's clear to me (personally) that EN is unwilling or unable to fix it. The blog from the CEO said that they can do things faster now. Well, yeah, they went fast from a working program to one that becomes nearly unusable and breaks one's workflow with that silly popup. Not even sure management is aware of the issue since any tickets opened about this get "resolved" when the CSR responds with "yeah, we know".

I got this response to my support ticket yesterday:

Regarding the issue about the "You're up to date" pop-up, it shows on my end that the issue should fixed on the next update of Evernote version 10.6.

In the meantime, the workaround is to download the Evernote Legacy app. Please follow the instructions in this Help & Learning article: Install an older version of Evernote.

They seem oblivious to how annoying/disruptive a popup is/can be e.g. in video meetings.  It is infuriating that they are so clueless.

I am an IT Director so tech is my livelihood. Personally, I am not too concerned about the popup - certainly not upset enough to quit Evernote. Evernote is awesome. We are all imperfect, so we have to expect that things will not always go smoothly, especially with a software package that likely has thousands of lines of code. Since I have no issue using the software and only had to deal with an occasional popup, I am in good shape. This is a very minor issue and I would only BARELY qualify it as an inconvenience. So these are my thoughts. Worth what you paid for them :)

I am on Windows 10 and had been getting the same popup.

    • The following is what I did to resolve this issue and a fully patched Windows 10 Professional PC.
    • This worked for me and does not guarantee it will work for anyone else.
    • I do not work for and am not affiliated with Evernote.
    • These steps came from my own investigation. Evernote support was not contacted by me prior to this and had no involvement.
    • Please do backup your computer before attempting anything below (assuming this post is approved).
    1. Download the latest version from https://evernote.com/download
    2. Export all notebooks to back them up, just in case - https://help.evernote.com/hc/en-us/articles/360053159414
    3. I noted that there was this folder - %AppData%\Local\evernote-client-updater. Inside that folder was a folder called 'pending'. Inside that was a file called update-info.json.
    4. I noted the contents of the json file: {"fileName":"Evernote-10.5.7-2171-setup.exe","sha512":"IAgMRflGMh9lkajz0l49xDcbhu+utxReiYq62YtNa7BwbbVQWGJIVdErcIc3kY6O6afcMFTGBjKNeaCXXIIUQQ==","isAdminRightsRequired":false}
    5. I then uninstalled Evernote.
    6. Then I reinstalled using the newly downloaded file, and found that it logged me back into the app, so it may have stored my credentials in the %appdata% folder somewhere or maybe in the registry.
    7. I found that the update-info.json file located in %AppData%\Local\evernote-client-updater was gone. Makes me wonder if the program was using that file to throw up the alerts. Finally this leads me to wonder if I could have just removed the json file and restarted the application.

The popup issue has not returned since I did this.

    Blessings to you

    Hey bluzegtr

    That's very ingenious.

You may not be a staff member, but you are indeed much loved at Evernote... so much so that they use your eulogy to Evernote as the snippet for this thread! That's amazing!  Out of all the posts, they use one that praises Evernote most highly - like an Amazon ***** review!!!

See snippet below: "I am not too concerned about the popup"

    Hilarious!!!!!!!!!!

Now Jan 8th and I am seeing this every fricken day.  How is this so difficult?  First post on this was 12/21/2020.  18 days and you can't find the code to one stinking pop up and disable it?  You have to be kidding me right?  Evernote you are losing customers over this stupid bug.  I just filed a bug report on this.  We will see what kind of response I get.  This is beyond ridiculous.

    response I got yesterday:

Again, my sincerest apology for the inconvenience this has caused you. Please know that our development team is taking extra effort to fix the issue.

Your utmost understanding and extended patience is highly appreciated.

    Amazing, just totally amazing.

Ah, this is much better....this is how the NAG message came up this morning. I wonder if I am on the most current release version? 😁

    Screen Shot 2021-01-07 at 10.12.43 AM.png

I got the same.  I thought I was going mad.

Oh well, I guess they can say it's solved because there's no pop-up message.  Just a blank popup.

Nice to know that they are working on it... give them a few more weeks and they might figure out how the code works... and then maybe test it???  and then release it???

  15. I opened a new support ticket and they responded they are 'working to fix this'.  To which I respond:

    1) The message is "You're up to date!" not 'you are up to date' as you stated.
    2) For me it occurs randomly or possibly on a clock, not at startup.  Others have reported it happening on startup.  Randomly (or timed) is especially annoying and disruptive.
    3) You say you are 'currently working to fix this' So why is it marked 'solved' on the forum by staff member Shane D on Dec 30 at the same time he says "we are working to fix it as quickly as we can" which shows it is not solved, and why are you closing people's support tickets as 'solved'?
    4) It is now Jan 6.  If Evernote, working 'as quickly as it can' takes this long to fix a pop-up, it might be time to do a bit of navel-gazing over there at evernote.

    Infuriating

    I submitted a ticket at https://help.evernote.com/hc/requests/new

You need to make some choices, and it may suggest that you go to the community forums (i.e., back here), but after I made the choices, a button appeared at the bottom left saying "Submit Ticket" (Send us an email whenever your need us). I am a premium subscriber, I'm pretty sure it would not appear without that. But you can also got the "Technical Issues > Other > User interface issues." They will want a screen shot, but you could copy from here if you don't have your own.

I also included a link to this thread, saying I was not the only person with this problem.

    Just got one again.

I opened a support ticket a while back on this subject and they responded 'it's known bug'.

    But did nothing.

They seem totally oblivious to how annoying a popup is - living in a bubble.

     ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

10.5.0 is not the latest version for MacOS, it's 10.5.7. I suggest you manually update.

    • MAC

The most recent version is 10.5.7 build 2171. Released December 16, 2020.

Evernote for Mac 10.5.7 is available now from the Mac App Store, or as a direct download version from our website. If you're already running the direct download version, you do not need to take any action and will see an automatic update soon.

It seems faintly ironic that a user is told "you are up to date!" when this forum says 'you are not up to date!'...

And that when the problem was marked 'fixed' it was not fixed but we were told to watch this thread...

And when watching this thread, the problem is fixed (maybe) but we are not informed...

    *sigh*

  18. The problem (for me) was that the window would pop up randomly (possibly every 24 hours) - not on launch.

@gallde You can test your problem and declare it solved.  I cannot test my problem - however I gave my logic, and can await a random pop-up.  My client program says I am up to date - it must surely check the server to conclude this.  The staff member has not posted a resolution - they just lied and said it was fixed a while back, when it was not fixed at all by their own admission.

Furthermore it does not help that the staff changed the title of this thread to 'continuous release note pop-up' which is grammatically incorrect, since a continuous process never ceases for a moment.  The mean continually.  But even that is imprecise.

It looks like they fixed the "you're up to date" popup issue, anyone still getting it?

Now if they'd only fix the tray icon click (or double-click) not directly opening the main program...

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    My response:

    • I have open 'you're up to date!' notification saying my version (10.5.7) is 'up to date!'
    • If I go into Evernote (windows) I confirm this: 'You're up to date! Evernote 10.5.7 is currently the newest version available'
    • From this I conclude that it is not fixed - unless they have fixed it without incrementing the version and releasing it, and not informed this community as promised by Shane D:

    Hi All,

Just wanted to let you know that we are aware of this issue, are able to reproduce it, and are working to fix it as quickly as we can.

I'll follow-up here once I have an update on the fix.

They are taking their own sweet time and really do not care one little bit how much they piss off their loyal customers.

  20. @ShaneD

    1)  This topic has been "solved by Shane D 2 hours ago"  - well, that's a lie

    2) You changed the topic to "Continuous Release Note Pop-Up" - presumably to make it really difficult for anyone to find, by searching for the ACTUAL MESSAGE ie "you're up to date! notification".  Is this deliberate?  Why would you do that?  What people search for is THE MESSAGE ITSELF - not your regurgitated semi-digested version of the problem.

OMG how can an organisation not know how to solve this problem after rewriting the entire codebase from scratch?  [okay that may be a lie also but your CEO said it]
