Evernote ScanSnap Color Shift Problems

Recommended Posts

I posted the following message in another thread several months ago and received no replies.  I'm posting it again here in hopes that someone else may have experienced this problem and figured out a solution for it.  I had hoped that updates to the software would improve this situation, but it has not.  I still get a consistent shift toward red with scans of images, especially black and white images, but also color images.  Here's the previous post with a little more detail:

I have an SSEE that is physically connected to a MacMini running the Mavericks OS.  In general it works well, but I have three problems to report:

1. In automatic mode it detects black and white photos as documents and files them in the document folder as a PDF scan.

2. If I pre-select "photos" in the setup before the scan, it will scan BW photos as photos but scans them as color photos and sometimes -- but not always -- makes some very funky color substitutions. For instance, the white siding on a house is turned into an off-color pink.  If I let it mis-classify one of the problem BW photos as a document and scan it to a PDF file the same color problems occur.  This leads me to believe that the problem is in the scanner firmware itself.

3. Color photos also in some instances evidence some weird color shifts.  For instance, a child standing in front of a building with dark wood siding ends up having his natural skin tone replaced with a "reddish" tint and the wood has red streaks through it.

The scan of documents and receipts works well and the auto detection is fairly good.  However, receipts that are larger than register receipts are almost always misclassified as documents.  OCR of documents works fine.

I'm wondering if some of these problems are known and will be corrected in the upcoming firmware update -- hopefully soon.

Thanks.

Have you submitted a support ticket?  I don't use the EE ScanSnap but my vanilla model works just fine.  I believe Evernote Support are the go-to guys for tech issues on the EE scanner,  and it sounds as though you have one or more tech problems.  If no-one responded to your earlier post it's probably because it's a purely local issue that you're experiencing.

That actually sounds like a good idea, I'll do a trouble ticket.  However, I can't figure out where to start a trouble ticket.  At http://evernote.com/contact/support/ticket/ there is no real option that deals with ScanSnap problems.  The closest is Evernote Market, where I bought the scanner, but the sub-options on there are more about ordering issues than hardware.  I started to fill out a support ticket there but was only given a space big enough for about five short words.  If you could point me in the right direction, I would appreciate it.  Thanks. -- Carl

There's only one support page - see the link in my signature.  A short summary of the problem should be enough to get things started - you can always add the URL of this forum page to the ticket so they get more background...

OK, I did make a support request at the URL you suggested, which is the same URL I had tried earlier.  Problems that need to be rectified with the support ticket process:

1. Very clunky interface

2.  No option for SSEE as a hardware option

3.  No indication when you are on subject line that you are actually entering the subject line of a message

4.  Once you enter the subject line, you are given a space about the size of enlarged pea to enter "all the necessary details."

5.  Once you've entered all the details, you have to scroll back to try and see what you've entered; it should be a open page resembling what you'd find on most halfway decent blog sites. (hmm.... maybe like the space I'm typing in now on this discussion site.)

6.  I hope the customer service is better than the sloppy, user-ugly interface that I had to use to request it.

;) I think the fault tracking software is a third-party buy-in,  just like this forum software.  If you're a premium user you can also chat with the support team,  weekdays and PST (although they also seem to work crazy hours...).  Good luck with the process - it might take a little longer,  depending on how many SSEE specialists are available at any one time...

Update:  Basic problem not solved.  Still have "color shift" problem.  I amply demonstrated this to EN tech folks by scanning same photo with EN iPhone app (no red shift) and then with SSEE (red shift clearly noticeable).  Whereupon I was told it must be a hardware problem and to talk to Fujitsu.  Fujitsu says it's not a hardware problem but a software problem. I'm seriously considering selling my SSEE on eBay and then buying the non-EN version of the same scanner.

And, as I said in earlier post, the automatic detection of documents vs. photos vs. receipts vs business cards just does not work very well.  The only type of document that I've not had regularly misclassified is business cards.  The size and shape is unique enough that this part of the algorithm seems to work well.  The others not so well.  Again, as mentioned before all black and white photos and some color photos are classified as documents.  Receipts that are anything other than register receipts are classified as documents.  These are but a few examples.

All and all, I would be, I think, much happier with SnapScan iX500 because of its flexibility and, it's better detection of accurate color representation.
