(Archived) How do I get ALT+F4 back to closing Windows apps instead of launching Evernote?

Recommended Posts

I just installed the Evernote rich client ( on Windows 8. I tried closing a different application window using ALT+F4, like I often do, but I was surprised to see that Evernote launched instead.

I want to get the default Windows behavior back for ALT+F4:

  • When a window is active, ALT+F4 closes the active window.
  • When no windows are active (i.e., Show Desktop), the Windows Shut Down/Restart/Log off dialog appears.

Please tell me how to get back to the default Windows settings; I use that keyboard shortcut all the time.

I want to continue using Evernote, but I need that Windows keyboard shortcut back.

Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the response!  I figured it out:

It was actually an issue with the keyboard I was using while the laptop was docked.  The keyboard has programmable function keys, and ALT+F4 is a shortcut for "New."  ALT+F4 works as expected when I use my laptop keyboard.

Next step is to look up how to reprogram my keyboard so that it does what I want it to do.

Thanks again!
