Useful trick to find notes with sub tags that don't include the parent tag

Recommended Posts

I often want to see if I have tagged things with sub-tags but not included the parent tag. You can achieve this through a potentailly long and tedious advanced search syntax string.

(tag:albert_rapp OR tag:colour OR tag:extensions OR tag:patchwork OR tag:gganimate OR tag:ggdist OR tag:themes) NOT tag:ggplot

It turns out there is another much simpler way.

  • Select the main tag
  • Use the drop down from the blue lozenge to include sub-tags

  • Open the search bar and check that the main tag is included under the search bar. If it isn't colapse and expand the sidebar. This is the "you can't filter then search"  bug.
  • Exclude the main tag from the search
-tag:ggplot

You then get a rather strange screen that seems to say you have both included and excluded the same tag but gives you the same result as the long advanced search syntax string.

As an aside, if you do want to use the advanced search syntax method, you can copy the tag names from the drop down list of sub-tags (first screen shot above).
