I am looking for a way to disable the shortening of URLs (links) in my notes but I am not able to find a way to do this on the Evernote app on Windows.

?  Evernote does not 'shorten' URLs.  Please post an example - is it possible another browser app or extension is doing this?

Hi

Tx for the response.

I use the latest Evernote desktop application for Windows and the Microsoft Edge browser.

If you look at the attached note, you will see what I mean.

Top one is the shortened URL. 2nd one is the same link but copied to Notepad and then pasted in my Evernote note.

Regards

Hmmn.  And you prefer the 700-plus character version to the simple link?  They do (or should) both work the same..

In most normal circumstances,  everything after the "?" symbol is a tracking cookie,  sending details about your browsing to a third party service somewhere.  I tend to delete that part of a URL when copying it from the browser address bar.

In this case it's clearly your search details - as well as the tracking bit,  feeding Google's statistics.

How did you generate the shorter link though?  If I do the same search and save the page,  or a bookmark,  I get the full link showing...

OK. Let me explain. I am active on the Microsoft Community forum and therefore have to copy and paste a lot of links. I create notes in Evernote to use to make it a bit easier than having to reinvent the wheel every single time.

Another example is below.

Using Microsoft Edge.

I have this link open in the browser. I right click, copy, and paste the link in a new Evernote note.

Then the link is shortened by itself.

When I paste the same link in a text editor, and copy and paste in the same Evernote note, it gives me the full URL.

For the purposes of these notes, I cannot use shortened links even though they will point to the same location. I need to be able to copy and past the full link to an Evernote note, to use in the Microsoft forum. Otherwise there is an extra step (copy to the text editor and then to Evernote and as I do 100+ tickets per day on some days, that takes a LOT of time) 😉

Interestingly enough, and just now tested, from Google Chrome, it pastes normally.

So it seems to be an Edge setting somewhere.

This is the link should you wish to test between Edge and Chrome.

Hmmn...  from Copilot on my Win11 system:

Yes, Microsoft Edge does have a feature to shorten URL links¹[2]. When you copy a link in Edge, it converts the long web address into a short hyperlink with the website title¹[2]²[3]. This makes the web address shorter, cleaner, and easier to understand¹[2]²[3]. You can access this feature in Edge by opening the browser Settings and clicking `Share, copy and paste` from the left panel¹[2]. There are two choices here, `Link` which will shorten the URL, and `Plain text` where the full and complete URL¹[2].

Additionally, there are extensions available such as `Url Shortener` that can help you create short links using various services³[1]. Once installed, you can click the extension icon on the toolbar to shorten the current page or right-click on any link to create a short URL⁴[4]. The short links automatically copy to your clipboard⁴[4].

Please note that while these features can help make sharing links easier, it's important to use them responsibly to respect privacy and security guidelines. Is there anything else you would like to know? 😊
