Toolbars generally (and EN's specifically) take a lot of valuable screen space. A general UI design principle is that all functionality in a hideable toolbar should also be otherwise available.
As a keyboard user, I almost always hide toolbars to gain screen space. But when the Mac client toolbar is hidden, Search apparently cannot be accessed. If the toolbar is shown but without icons (to minimize real estate theft), then invoking search turns the icons back on.

Can you fix this?
