I was told in a chat with an Evernote rep that this was intentional. In the past, the spellcheck was inconsistent and often missed errors. I hope they fix this bug! Link to comment

I think that they needed to go through some rejiggering from the old system to accommodate a new component; if I can dig up a link to the topic, I'll post it here. Edit: Found it.
