  1. BurgersNFried, nova 47 Thanks for your suggestions and input. I now have purchased my scanner w/o the extra software and have spent several hours fiddling with it. For someone using Evernote to store documents, I see no need to buy the extra software.

  3. Thanks all for your input. From comments so far, I can see that I need to add Optimizing Workflow to my list of decision criteria, not just Minimizing Hardware Cost and Minimizing # of Devices. I am seeing the value of having a stand-alone scanning device.
  4. I can see the value of scanning documents into Evernote and am thinking about the best way to do this: Replace my old printer with a multifunction device (print, scan, fax, etc.). A few companies -- Ricoh and Lexmark -- have developed software specifically for Evernote integration. Buy a dedicated scanner and a printer separately. My questions: Can anyone offer opinions of their experience with multifunction hardware/software and ease of use with Evernote? As I scan the forums and articles on the web, the default option most are choosing seems to be a dedicated scanning device, with most leaning toward Fujitsu. What is going on here? Why do multifunction devices get so little discussion as an option? Specific recommendations? Thanks for your input.

Wern, gazumped agree... I see no evidence that creating outline functionality is high on Evernote todo list, nor do they need to do this by themselves. Opportunity still is there for an existing outlining SW vendor to integrate through Evernote API. Evernote could also choose to acquire one of these companies and incorporate functionality into their platform; questionable whether this would be a good move as the SW offerings are so highly varied. All... I did followup posts on both this forum and the Outliner Software forum. At this point I am leaning toward using Evernote to capture research and then export .html files to Scrivener for Windows to organize and write first draft of my book. There is discussion re: your point on tags. Understand the theory but will have to play with tags to see if they are practical for a complex book.
  6. gazumped, Thanks for your perspectives. I can understand your concern of potential overwhelmedness. That said, Scrivener seems to be built to allow for highly iterative, back and forth workflow -- from researching, to outlining, to writing. I will share problems if I run into any. Also agree that w/ Evernote whatever works for you must be a guide -- we are paving new pathways in moving from hierarchical to non-linear organization and workflow. GrumpyMonkey, you raise interesting, useful perspectives that I had never thought about. First, my mental model of workflow has been simply to use Evernote for gathering and storing research info, then selectively to import to Scrivener with no further need for syncing. Had not thought about value of getting edited info back into Evernote via Dropbox. Will have to mull over this. Agree, Scrivener seems to have strong abilities to outline and manipulate information... Thus, for my purpose of writing a book, help me understand what are possible advantages of syncing info BACK to Evernote? Also, I am not clear on the value add you see in using a text editor outside of Scrivener (except for final clean up)?? Scrivener documentation acknowledges likely need to import a final draft into a text editor for fine tuning, but I get impression that you do not do ANY text editing in Scrivener? Yes? Why not? Scrivener seems to be a tool that does have a lot of text editing and manipulating capabilities -- at least enough to get to first draft.   7. I would appreciate tapping the wisdom of this group in reacting to the patchwork solution I am zeroing in on to write my book. Will my proposed solution work smoothly? am I missing anything? Here is what I am seeing as a solution: * Capture research information in multiple notes using Evernote. Evernote has ability to capture text, graphics, pdf, etc. There will be hundreds of notes that will be the research to support my book. * Export individual Evernote notes to .html files. Evernote has the ability to export multiple individual notes as indivual html files. Evernote provides the capability of selecting specific notes for export. * Import these .html files to Scrivener for Windows. In playing around with Scrivener so far, I tried importing 3 .html files simultaneously as a test. This was a test, so I am assuming Scrivener would not hiccup in being able import hundreds of html notes originating from Evernote. * Use Scrivener to 1) filter and organize the notes, 2) as needed use the research to create an outline and write text for the book. fyi, Scrivener for Windows has been in beta for about a year, but is scheduled for a v 1.0 release on October 31. Can you help me spot any problems before I spend many hours learning the software and reading the 200 page user manual for Scrivener? * Will this solution work? am I missing anything? * can you spot any problems that I am not anticipating * Can you suggest other options?   8. Metrodon, Thanks...but actually I am hoping for integration in the other direction -- I would like to use an outlining program that integrated with (or at least could import FROM) Evernote. Why? I would like to use Evernote to create and capture information, but use outlining software functionality to organize notes into a hierarchical structure (i.e., a book outline and text).
  9. I am new, so let me just say thank you to all who have posted and have helped educate me on Evernote capabilities and limitations. I am writing a book and struggling with the best ways to use/not use Evernote to help. Evernote is great for capturing information, but its lousy for manipulating that information into a hierarchical structure (that is inherently needed for a book, as least as book is defined today). I have read with interest the discussions about the existing Evernote structure of tags/notebooks/search vs. lack of hierarchical organizing. This strikes me like a false dichotomy (tastes great vs. less filling). There is a category of software referred to as outlining software with an active forum of pioneers at www.outlinersoftware.com. There are hundreds (NOT a typo) of outlining software programs out there http://www.outlinersoftware.com/topics/ ... -outliners . After scanning the forum, some of the better ones appear to be MyInfo, Ultra Recall, WhizFolders, Outline 4D, Scrivener (Mac), Zost, Ecco Pro, Omni Outlines, Surfulator and others. There is no clear winner in outline organizer offerings. It is fragmented among dozens of confusingly similar and flawed offerings. Mostly by default and lack of knowledge of alternatives, I have been a user of ActionOutline for several years. In starting to write my book, I ran into many limitations and looked to see what else is out there -- thus stumbling into the Outliner Software forum. I feel like I am in the twilight zone. What I have been hoping to find is outliner software that has great integration with Evernote. No cigar... at least yet. Am I missing something? This strikes me like a golden opportunity for an existing software outlining offering to tap into Evernotes 10 million users. Why aren't there outliner programs that have figured out the value of integrating with Evernote, similar to what Curio has done with mindmapping software (for Mac only). Evernote has opened its API. My theory is that whatever outliner software develops a decent integration with Evernote will be cream that rises to the top. I would be happy with crude outlining functionality if only it integrated with the powerful capturing capabilities of Evernote.
