    Under the "View" menu, I enabled the option that reads, "Show note counts in sidebar". I see that option in the Evernote Windows client, version 10.8.5-win-ddl-public (2367)". After enabling that option, I see the note count in parentheses to the right of the notebook names in the sidebar.
