Full Featured Linux Client Please!

Bear note taking app, $1.49 monthly or 14.99 yearly. It's only mac right now, but it's cleaner.

Successful businesses evolve, Microsoft is a huge Linux contributor now, they have sql server for linux. They are a successful business. Dropbox has clients for Windows, Mac and linux, they continue to grow. Evernote from a valuation perspective is a shadow of what it was at its height. Their web client has always been sub-par to the point of unusable. I updated EULA is the nail in the coffin IMO.

More of a general statement, but the new EULA allowing employees to read your notes. As far as your "linux Business" statement, Evernote was a tech company that tried to sell schoolbags, was it in the "school bag business"? I would think a linux client is more closely aligned with their "Core" business than school bags and desk grabage...

Looks like evernote's trying to do whatever it can to put itself out of business.

Disdain? you've missed the point completely. From the beginning most of the posters here wanted nothing more than to use the best quality app for note taking on linux. The moderators/gurus of the board have repeatedly expressed the fact that Evernote has no plans to build an evernote client. Most of the the posts have been extremely dismissive and quite frankly obnoxious to those trying to drum up support for their cause. It's been pointed out that it's just not in their strategy... WE, the linux advocates feel Evernote lost it's way and choose to share an opinion. It's been pointed out that Linux will NEVER be in their strategy (Which is weird unless you are an employee, board member or making things up). So what's their strategy, making gray and green backpacks or desk chotckies? Crappy food apps that take pictures of your food? The article references a tumultuous year for Evernote. I want them to succeed more than anything and in order to do that they should listen to a decent sized customer base that they've been ignoring. You can argue that they've "Done their due diligence, and the market isn't there". Ultimately, their due diligence has caused problems of late. Lastly, I point out that Microsoft is fully embracing linux and porting it's .net runtime and development platform to it. I'm sure they've done their due diligence and have a much better strategy laid out than Evernote based on their current state. The sarcastic LOL in my post was based on the fact that you've repeatedly expressed your negative opinions in this thread where it wasn't even warranted. When rightfully so people pointed out evernotes current "issues" you sugar coated it and tried to make it seem normal to meet your dismissive agenda. Fact of the matter is they are in trouble and unless you want to use Google Keep or Onenote, it may be in your interest to advocate for a quality linux client.

I was thinking this the other day and the article confirmed it, instead of focusing on a Linux app which may take a few developers, they tried to sell desk supplies and back packs. It doesn't even make sense. It sounds like it's days might be numbered...

The most obvious was use of obscene language. The poster has since removed this. This has been, mostly, a serious subject discussed seriously. Misconstruing stuff and attempting to belittle contributors with tendentious comment at best gets us nowhere and and worst invites reprisals. To re-iterate my position: 1) EV have the right, nay a duty, to take business decisions in their perceived best interests of the stakeholders, 2) Not having a Linux agent has an impact beyond the Linux market 3) The application market is moving towards being OS agnostic. EV is getting increasingly out of line. 4) The current product priorities features over stability and standards conformance. 5) Trying to run EV under WINE is the canary indicating issues for some current & future Windows users. The bottom line is EV is losing valuable former supporters who would enthusiastically adopt and promote a genuinely good platform independent solution, I haven't found one yet and, I guess, EV are betting one will not come along. In which case they are making the right decision! That's my point for the most part no ones really violating the TOS, saying "you all should read this..." When it really doesn't apply doesn't make sense.

Not sure I understand which TOS was violated?

It is a business decision, hence people voicing their opinion through multiple mediums in an effort to change or drive that decision. Telling people get over it and move on is an emotional response, if that happened this thread would only have 2 posts. Whether it is removing GMOs from food, changing the way cable tv is priced or developing a Linux client of some app, people have a right to voice their opinion as long as it's not rude, threatening or violates the terms of service. If it bothers you to constantly have to respond, don't. There is no compelling reason for you to, people could read the history. Unless you are an Evernote employee, you are only speculating on their resource vs. business value decisions. If you are an employee, then you should disclose that when posting. I like Evernote, always have since Google retired their first notes project. But let's face it, the web client is nowhere near as functional, logical or easy to use as the native apps and mobile apps.

I run Evernote in Wine on two different Fedora (20 & 21) boxes. Unfortunately the only version I've managed to get working is 5.6.4.4632, any newer than that and it wont start using Wine. I tried NixNote about a year ago, but I though it was too rough. And I agree with Brainsys comment also. I would love continue working with Evernote, but I'm affraid I have to start looking for an alternative since I'm a bit worried how long I can stay on 5.6.4 version. I've used evernote on wine with F21 for a while. I am currently using EN version 5.8.7.5 I think. It runs ok, sometimes I have issues but overall ok. The web is just lacking some features and also has some usability issues. I just say that Evernote was cutting jobs and closing offices and concentrating on business. It will suck if they ***** the consumer. I've been a premium user since the 09 or 10 and would hate to have to close my account.

While at the original time Evernote may have felt there wasn't demand, but it's our work to change that. Anyone who thinks it's final should look at companies that don't adapt. I mean Microsoft is considering going open source and porting .net to Linux. There is demand for .net on Linux. A quiet voice is no voice...

I think you miss the point by a country mile. This whole "we want Linux support" has gone WAY beyond simply "asking" for it. You have your answer ... in fact, you got your answer over and over and over. The answer is: "No!" In what way is it not like the yelling and stomping of a 2 year old to keep on insisting that you WANT it? Do you think that if you ask loud enough and long enough that the economics will suddenly make sense to the developer and you'll get it? You simply don't seem to grasp what is going on. This is not something that is your right and is being withheld from you by a mean parent. The owner of the company sees no profit in spending his resources that way and so has decided not to do it. It baffles me that some people don't seem to get that. Hey, I'm on your side. In fact, let's port it to OS2, so long as we are at it. There must be four or five guys somewhere running OS2 on some ancient IBM hardware. O.K. Enough. I'm off to grab my crayons and make some placards demanding "Evernote for OS2 -- NOW!" A good business never closes the door on anything that can attract more revenue if it's within the scope of their strategy. Smart executive teams are constantly re-evaluating their markets. Companies reverse or change decisions all the time so relax their buddy, it's the internet if you don't like whining, leave.

Yes, I have the same issue with the latest version on wine. As far as the web goes, performance is good but there are a number of issues with navigating notebooks, switching notebooks, moving notes etc....

I'm pretty sure no one is saying there is not a need. What is being said, is that Evernote has stated publicly they had no plans to make a linux client & there has been no evidence they have changed that opinion. Just in case you missed it even though I quoted it, he asked WHO NEEDS DATA LOCALLY? SO he is saying there isn't a need... I didn't mention the business decision or anything else, if you can't take the time to read the post please don't comment.

ChromeOS isn't a workstation Linux distribution for a sys admin. As far as who needs data locally? Anyone with a laptop (consultants, engineers, sales engineers) that travel, work in remote sites, secured areas, closed datacenters, subways and tunnels, people who fly.... Just because it's not your need, doesn't mean the need doesn't exist.

If you read the entirety of the topic, you'll see that the Evernote team (the CTO, in fact; about as official as you get) *has* chimed in already, more than once. They tend to not like to repeat themselves; if they change their minds, then you can bet that they'll may it public, and probably post about it right here, as they are well aware of the desire for an Evernote Linux client. The "deal with it attitude" comment probably a reflection on the rudeness of the poster being responded to, but let's face it; the Evernote stance should be pretty clear by now, and yet nobody seems to accept what the actual Evernote employees actually have actually said, on more than one occasion. Parse the situation any way you like, but at the end, we're left with a situation that neither you nor I can change -- what else can you do but try to deal with a situation you don't like. no, if it was only that comment I probably wouldn't have posted. It's the overall tone. If you guys have to answer the question everday, it is what it is. That is customer service, this is an evernote sanctioned forum so I would expect a little more polish than a 4chan forum or reddit thread. I've read through all the threads too. And about changing things, that is where your wrong. With enough pressure and support things could change in technology, they always do. I've been around long enough to see major pieces of software and companies disappear and replaced but things many engineers dismissed.

gbarry as an evernote employee, it would be helpful for you or someone on your team to chime in. Maybe even put together a registry of users who would pay for the feature. The whole "deal with it" attitude from moderators is a horrible reflection on evernote. Some of us are customers, not just of premium subscriptions but of Jot note pen and moleskin notebooks etc.... If evernotes stance is truly "deal with it", then that is really sad and horrible customer service. Please let us know if that is the official evernotes stance because I will gladly cease all paid transaction with evernote. I can delete your account. PMing you.

No one has said you (or anyone else) should not ask for a linux client. However, linux supporters are the ones who are telling the rest of us to stop posting our thoughts. This is a message board. If you post something, there's a really good chance someone else may have another idea or something of value to offer. IMO, odd that the "linux community" that is clamoring for an EN client is so against helping/modifying baumgarr's open source linux client. Especially since it's clear that at least in the near or not so near future, that's your best bet, if you don't like the web client or using Wine. When it comes to the actual product your thoughts are not your own, you are just relaying the last communicated thought by EN. Your personal thoughts are your comment regarding wine and nix note. The answer to your question is most of us are using wine or nixnote and it doesn't fit the bill 100%. Not all Linux Users are programmers and can contribute code, or have the time. Some are even willing to pay for the client and we feel EN is in a better position to interface with their product rather than a 3rd party.

Thanks, I got that information when the thread was started. I didn't need you to re-iterate it, nor did I ask you to. I'll continue to keep voicing my support for a linux client, you can continue to tell me that EN isn't interested and we can continue to cycle. Or you could just let people ask for a client and essentially request EN to take notice and possibly change their product direction. I really don't see the value you're adding anyway.
