Thank you for your reply, gazumped! The "Work Chat" spam has disappeared very quickly after venting my frustration here — maybe it was a coincidence, or someone in the right position read this after all. 🙂

I pay for Evernote, but you keep putting your Work Chat advertisement in my face with only [Start chatting] and [Later] buttons as dismiss options. This is unacceptable. I have no use for Work Chat and I do NOT want to see this ever again! P.S. I would have liked to bring this up with Evernote Support, but quite conveniently for Evernote, the support page comes up mostly blank and is unusable (Chrome/Windows).
