  1. Incredible!! I tried your second suggestion again - even though I did it three days ago - and it's syncing. I have no explanation for that but it's working. So thanks again! I would not have tried that again had you not mentioned it!!!

  2. I've been a user since 2012. I have one device that will not sync. I have done everything I've learned over the years (uninstall, download the latest version, empty trash) and it will not sync. Other devices are fine. It's a Windows 10 computer that I have no problems with. I'm misssing something. Any ideas? Thank you kindly!

They forget what made them the market-leader in the first place.

That's the truth and are set on a new path. Hating the new Evernote is not enough. That is ultimately an exercise in futility IMO. The die is cast and we need an escape.

I think the reason most of us quietly check this thread is that we have lost hope for EN.  We are not here to understand the crazy EN rush to self-destruction or find light at the end of this tunnel.

We are here searching for hints on how to easily escape and move our data to other software that will continue to function roughly in the way that the legacy EN software does and which hopefully does not assume an always-on high speed Internet connection or turn into software as a service. Some of us like tohave our data on our own devices.

We're worrying about the day when EN decides to pull the rug out from under us and leave us with a branch we have tried and rejected as unsuited to our needs.

I appreciated the posts a while back suggesting alternatives and offering links.  I checked them out and it seems that some developers can see the niche that Evernote filled completely opening up and are working to fill it. Things appear to be developing in a promising direction so that an easy and reliable transfer of data may be feasible.  So far I see no obvious clear path but I am hoping there will be in time to save us.

I'm not a software aficionado. Like most clients of EN,  I am simply a user, with little interest in understanding or discussing EN's dreams.  Haunting these forums and tinkering with software is not something I care to do. I just expect EN to work reliably and not keep surprising me.    For that reason I am very glad that some are into all the details and alternatives and make a project out of looking around and and sharing what they learn.

Is there a thread for "Escaping the New Evernote"?  If not, there should be.

I'm sure a silent majority of worried users would love it.  We want out.

    This is perfectly said.

And I would love an alternative to EN that did what EN Legacy does now.

  4. I just don't get it. It's been six months since the "NEW Evernote." EN has issued how many new versions in those six months? I have no clue.

    Here's what do I know

    1. It used to be fast, certainly adequate for a workflow. I've been a paid customer since 2012

    2. IT. IS. STILL.  STILL.  STILL.      WAY.        TOO.             SLOW.                TO.                   USE

It's a very important tool for me. I am thankful I can still access the Legacy version.

Now - EN - can you PLEASE fix the speed? We don't need another whistle or bell. Fix the main issues first.

    PLEASE!

With EN 10 you have no chance to check, if any information is synced or not. "All changes saved" definitely does not correspond to syncing in any way. This was proved within this forum and imho does only mean the changes have been written to a cache (hopefully). Only way to check is to open web interface.

I would strongly suggest doing regular full backups with Evernote Legacy until they implement a backup/export option in EN 10.

For a full backup in Evernote Legacy reinstall it from Evernote support page and make sure it has completed a full sync. Legacy and EN 10 can be installed side by side on your machine. Having synced you log off from your account, then seeing the log-in screen you press CTRL+SHIFT+E, select your account and voilà, EN Legacy will do a full export creating a folder on your desktop with an ENEX-file per notebook. That's how I do it on a regular basis since EN once lost several precious media files from my journals (yes, dead hardlinks to my attachments on their server end) and the support never could bring it back nor could explain how missing files could occur on professional cloud service. Enjoy peace of mind with your backups 🙂

I used this method of backup this morning but I don't see an ENEX-file per notebook. I only see a handful on ENEX files, not one for each notebook. Sorry for my ignorance but any ideas what I am doing wrong? Thanks very much for any help.

Glad I could help. I am looking forward to EN 10 getting real backup options as well.

Having a regular backup on cloud storage is better than nothing and very convenient I would definitely recommend this as step 1. But for good data security you should always have at least one copy that is locally separated from your other devices in case of disaster or theft to/in your home. So please consider to have a copy physically by yourself which is not connected to the internet. So in case of identity theft or hacking your accounts your data cannot be compromised. This way you would have:
    1. Evernote Account online and local copys held by your EN client(s)
    2. a regular full backup (potentially some time versioning would be good) on cloud storage you do manually
    3. at least one full backup on an offline medium (maybe 2 external hard drives you swap regularly and store in another building after copying the export to it) you do manually.

That's the scenario for my data backup.

I was thinking using an external HDD and you confirmed it. Thanks again!

Thank you SO MUCH! I can't believe I've used Evernote for so long yet was unaware of this way to backup.

Is it a good idea to keep the completed backup folder in Google Drive or One Drive, or do you suggest an alternate location? I have one on my laptop but would like extra protection.

    Thank you again!

  8. With the level of upset and frustration that dedicated EN users are expressing, wouldn't you think management would at least come out with a "we hear you and we are going to make changes" message? Other than the blog the CEO recently posted (which addressed almost none of the concerns expressed on this forum), there is silence. This is highly disconcerting.

EN is crucial to my work. I don't want to leave. But the longer the silence goes on, the more troubled I become. And unlike some of the posters here, I don't have the technical expertise to do a thorough job of evaluating options. I'm fairly sure there are a significant number of people in the same boat as I am.

Am I wrong in thinking that the tools and functionalities that have been taken away aren't coming back?
That management is saying: "here the new EN and this is the way it is?"
Or is EN a company that has lost its way and is losing talented employees, and therefore is a sinking ship?

Sorry if this isn't worded well. The frustration level here is high.

IT would be nice if they acknowledged this 'work in progress' mentality and allowed us to test the versions as they roll out. But I'm not willing to go through the dance of installing the new version, then reinstalling the legacy version each time. The fact that they remove the legacy app each time you install leads me to think that they believe this is a full production version, not a work in progress.

I am a beta user for another large database app I can't mention here. I can install new versions and run them side by side until my computer blows up. If it needs to convert the db, it does so with a copy, leaving the old app and data in place. Old versions get removed only when I want them to.

But like you, I will just use the legacy app. But instead of running it side by side with v10, I am running it side by side with the apps I am testing for my exit strategy.

I believe that Evernote will recover from this debacle, but probably not with my data and certainly not by wasting any more of my time.

What alternatives do you like the most? The incompetence of EN makes me wonder if the company is in trouble and suddenly we will all have to head for the exits. I would rather prepare now.

  10. Slow

    Slooowww

    Sloooowwww

    Unusable.

I don't want to migrate to One Note. I live EN. Paid customer since '12. But this is unusable. Using Legacy to give it time but how much is enough?

EN has to rectify this within a few weeks or I'm gone and it sounds like many others are as well.
