I switched to Joplin a few months ago, and I love it.  It has almost all of the features of legacy Evernote that I relied on, and the few features it doesn't have I've learned to live without.  The biggest thing that Joplin doesn't have that I used extensively in Evernote is nested tags; Joplin has tags, you just can't nest them.   No other program has nested tags, either, though, so the only way to switch out of Evernote is to give up on nested tags.

Obsidian has Nested Tags! And they are Real Nested Tags.  Evernote kinda has a Parent tag but you have to manually move child tags under the parent tag.  In Obsidian when you first type the tag - that's the way it is, no followup maintenance is required.  I find I'm doing so much less TAG maintenance in Obsidian, than in Evernote.

The reason I did not switch to Joplin was because it lacks nested tags.

Good luck to everyone on their journeys !       I have been burnt before, so a philosophy I follow is to keep my notes as simple as possible. The more complex you make them, the harder to migrate.  The more tagging you do, the more nesting you do, the more attachments you add, the more complex formatting you do, the harder it will be to migrate. temporary notes (eg going into a meeting) are fine to make complex - they are situational and not needed after a few months, and don't need to migrate.  but for more permanent notes, it would be ideal to keep them simple.  instead of attaching documents, your note could point to where they reside on your computer for e.g.    We all hope that in our lifetime, we don't need to migrate to a new notes app!  But it may not always be the case - price increase becomes ridiculous, company decides to retire the product, company goes bust ... etc.     And when the need to migrate happens, the simpler the notes, the easier to migrate.

And when you DO need to migrate and IF there are no other options,  do not discount, what I call, the "incremental migration" strategy.  This works as follows:

    - leave all existing notes in your old note app

    - new notes, you create in new note app

    - old notes, whenever you need to amend them, copy over to new note app manually and edit over there

The plus of this is you are also in a way doing housekeeping, eg after 1 year, you will have active notes in your new note app, while outdated notes only in your old note app.   This helps in keeping database small, thus faster speed. Also, when you do search, you don't get so many outdated notes also appearing in search.

In my case, I had 5000+ notes in my  old notes app, but after 1 year, I had transferred only 1500 active notes into my new notes app, and left the 3500 outdated notes in old app.   YMMV of course. 1500 notes coped over 1 year works out to be about manually copying 4 notes a day, which is not too painful (though of course in reality, in initial days, may need to copy up to 10 notes notes a day, and then it starts tapering off).    There are some drawbacks like having to search 2 notes app for some time.

Many may not have considered this as an option.  I certainly didn't. but it worked well for me, so am highlighting it as a POSSIBLE option to think about.

That's what I've been doing, slowly migrating to Obsidian.  I started in January 2022, when it became clear that Version 10 on Android was very low priority, even before BS came along.  I could not sync from Android to the desktop and Evernote stopped working on my Android phone for 2 weeks.  Version 10 was just too unreliable.  I continue to read reports about Android users losing notes and notes not syncing in the reviews, even today!!

So I still have Legacy working on Android and my Windows PC, right now.  I'm not logging out on either platform.  I have Evernote Firewalled, on both platforms, so it can never attempt to connect to the cloud.  It's working just fine!!  I'm not planning to migrate to Version 10 on my "production" devices and will slowly migrate everything to Obsidian.  I HAVE exported everything to .enex files and HTML files - just in case my Legacy apps stop working.

My biggest issue is getting tags converted to be compatible with Obsidian tags AND the issue where the EN Parent Tag, NEVER GETS exported to the .enex file!!&^%$#@!!  So I've been learning about SQLite Database tools, so I can directly update my tags in my .exb database, BEFORE exporting all my notes.

what is o-b-s? Could you please provide some more details. I am seriously looking for other  alternatives.

o-b-s is Obsidian.  obsidian.md is the web page  help.obsidian.md is a good place to start.  That's what I have been using for 2 years now.  I LOVE IT!!

I have successfully imported my Evernote notes into o-b-s but my evernote tags look like *****, so I'm working on resolving that.  I used a lot of tags in Evernote with a special character and haven't found a tool to convert my EN tags to Obsidian tags, yet.

FYI for anyone else struggling with Legacy log in problems.  Despite being a long-term paying user legitimately running Legacy until Mar. 23rd, I have received zero usable help from support for multiple requests.

I thought I'd try logging into v10 & see what it said & was surprised to see that it forced me to change my password.  Once I did that however, I was able to log into both versions on both my PCs.

EN v10 login fail Feb 28.jpg

As CalS has recommended MANY TIMES.  I AM NOT LOGGING OUT OF LEGACY EVER AGAIN!!!  THAT'S HOW YOU LOSE ACCESS TO your legacy notes.

I hope to keep access to my legacy notes, even after 3/23/24 and potentially keep access until my PC dies or my Android phone dies (which I think I'm prepared for).  I do have backups and have exported to ENEX and HTML files.  I haven't found a good solution yet for importing my notes into another Application.  I have too many tags and no good solution for converting them yet.  Contacted the developer of ExportNote and hoping his app will help me import my tags into Obsidian.

I have my firewall configs ready to turn on, the week of 3/18/24, so that legacy doesn't attempt to connect to Evernote in the cloud.

Some of us have other things going on in our lives other than focusing on a 30 day notice from Bending Spoons!!^%$#!!

BUT GOOD TO KNOW that logging into V10 and changing your password helped!!  Bending Spoons  actions and support are sure not convincing me to stick around!  Whew!!!  : (

FYI: Legacy is now syncing again for me also, so they must have changed something.

Yes.  It's syncing for me too.  I submitted a problem ticket but got the usual NON-RESPONSE saying check your version number and reboot your PC.  They never followed up to say they fixed something.  But clearly they DID fix something!!

My legacy Windows desktop client just stopped syncing, though Android is still working. I logged out and back in (to EN and to Windows), and the angry red banner with the update-or-else message - and the 3/20/24 EOL date - is gone, but still no sync. Good thing I screenshotted the banner for this thread, or I'd have no record of that date. And the banner is the only notification I received, BTW. I did not get the email other people have posted about. Yes, my account email address is current. And now, less than 48 hours after the banner, and more than 3 weeks before the EOL date, no syncing. It just happened in the last few hours, throwing a huge wrench in my life before I had time to make other plans. WTH?! This is utterly, unbelievably unacceptable! 😠😠😠

It stopped syncing for me too in the last few hours. I never got the banner!!!  (I have been using Obsidian for 2 years now - so I don't run EN that often anymore.) I at least got the email on 2/23/24.  NONETHELESS - WHAT IS THIS???  THEY SEND AN EMAIL SAYING WE HAVE 30 DAYS - THEN THEY CHANGE THEIR MIND AND DECIDE TO CUT US OFF THE NEXT DAY????

I did export everything a few months ago.  I still have 3,000 notes in Evernote, that I do NOT want to lose.  BUT Evernote's klugey Tag Hierarchy IS NOT EXPORTED in a way, I can import it completely to Obsidian!!&^!   I found a tool called:  ExportNote that would export EVERYTHING including the complete Tag Hierarchy, but did not get a chance to run it AND PLANNED to run it, before March 23rd.  I've since heard BendingSpoons shutdown that interface recently, as well!!!???

Bending Spoons communication has been HORRIBLE!!  Big Vendors NORMALLY give you one to two years notice concerning a hard shutdown date - at least 6 months notice.  Somebody must be hurting - wonder if BS is going bankrupt or something??

Update: Evernote Legacy asked to login again and now it is syncing again. Very strange! But I do not hope it lasts...

I have been able to sync using the legacy version on both Windows 10 & Android 12,  ever since January 2022.  BUT I am very careful to not logout on Android or my desktop PC.  It's actually encouraging to hear that you were able to login again and start syncing!!

I had major EN sync & search problems in January 2022.  Then I made the mistake of re-installing the legacy EN Android App (listened to one of the Apple Fanboys).  That's when I saw the writing on the wall and started looking elsewhere for an alternative to EN.  Now, not only do I use the legacy version of EN, but I consider the data in EN to be "legacy data".  Once EN cuts us legacy users off from access to the Cloud, I plan to use the legacy version without sync.  I always backup my desktop EN database & executables manually.  Since Jan 2022, I have been using Obsidian for 99% of my notes.  Hoping to get all of my EN data imported into Obsidian soon.

    Hello,

Today I got an orange bar displayed in Evernote Legacy 6.25.3.9348 (309348) under Win7 on the PC.
    On the bar it says:

“This version is out of date. You must install the new version to continue using Evernote."

Is this the end of Evernote Legacy on Win7?

    Best regards

I am running Evernote Legacy 6.25.1.909.1 (309091) under Win 10.

I did receive messages for about 3 weeks in August, informing me that I was running an old version of Evernote, but I just ignored the messages and they went away.  The legacy version has continued to run just fine.

Since the whole database resides on my PC.  I'm hoping I can continue to access it, on the PC, even though, I can't access the cloud version.

I also like to reference Evernote notes on my Android phone.  I just downloaded my primary notebook, so I can access it offline on Android.

I moved on to a different PKM app, almost 2 years ago, after I lost access to my Evernote Notes from my phone, for 2 weeks.  So my most recent notes are not at risk to be lost by Evernotes buggy software.   However, I have not exported my old Evernote notes yet.

I hope Evernote allows us to  continue to access our notes offline in stand alone mode, even after they cut us legacy users off, from syncing to the cloud.

JUST Updating the facts as so many responses have been not answering the question but being Defensive about my thinking of moving on from EN.

So I will state I do not take it lightly to be moving my whole system to another app. I Have been an EN User for well over 10 YRS and Paying PRO Prices to support them. I was a big fan of Phil's who started the company. And I was sticking with the company when he left and the internet was abuzz with 'EN Is Dying'.

SO, what seems to miss most responses is - My Current Notes now take 1+ minutes to open. I have written support and get tickets saying they will get back to me. BUT as of several weeks and several times contacting Evernote Support I keep not being answered and now all of Evernote Staff in the US appears to have been fire., I am beginning to suspect that Bending Spoons is run be a heartless AI with video projections of people. (People missed that this was Sarcasm... so let me now make it clearer #Sarcasm... there, now no misunderstandings, maybe)

So with No Support Response and my notes access problems getting worse, I am starting to look to alternatives that are close to Evernote. So far Nimubs Notes seems like a good Evernote Like Alternative. But open to other suggestions. Please list your app choices and the reason for your choice / maybe some of the functions the alternative app provides. Please DO NOT attack me because I am looking at other options. I realize there are Fanatics out there for so many things, including EN. So try to recognize that I am making this inquiry because I cannot get support and the app is not working properly. BUT if you choose to attack, then give actual FACTS with Links for why is so wrong with my choice and not just state Rumor or Speculation about Nimbus Notes if you Don't have Actual Experience with it.

Please DO response if you have an actual alternative app suggestion and why.

I figured there are others looking at possible alternatives and were still on the forums. SO I Thought I would ask Evenote Users that might have some two cents advice to give.

NIMBUS NOTE PRODUCT OVERVIEW (Just listing some of what they do just like Evernote)

    • All-new note editor

    • Groups, workspaces, folders, and subfolders

    • Public links to share notes, documents, images, and videos

    • Various collaboration features

    • Document search and image recognition (OCR)

    • Set colors to folders and notes

    • Reminders

    • Send emails to Nimbus Note

    • Screenshot and screencast tools

    • AND UNLIKE EVERNOTE... They let you do folders within folders within folders and let you color code the folders)

OBSIDIAN ALL THE WAY FOR ME!!

    - Tags are absolutely critical for me and Obsidian handles tags REALLY WELL - so much better than Evernote.

    - Searches - Obsidian is SOOO FLEXIBLE with its search capabilities: Regular Expressions, Saved Searches or Bookmarks can be sorted in alphabetical order - WHICH HAS ALWAYS BEEN TOO HARD FOR EVERNOTE TO FIGURE OUT???  Or organized in folders and sub-folders in any order you wish.

    - Templates - REAL TEMPLATES.  Programmable templates.  Evernote's templates don't include tags or headers.  There's no way to programmatically enter today's date in a header in Evernote????

    - Foldable sections

    - VERY CUSTOMIZABLE THEMES - that allow you to change the view, color and organization of your notes on your screen.

    - CANVAS option that allows you organize multiple notes any way you like on your screen.

    - It is open source.  So there are lots of improvements being made every month or every other month.

    - There are lots of developers world wide, who write plugins.  I have found the plugins to be very reliable.

    - Even though this is open source software IT IS SOOOO MUCH MORE RELIABLE THAN WHAT WE HAVE HAD TO DEAL WITH FROM EVERNOTE DEVELOPERS , THE PAST 3 YEARS!

    - Finally the data, folders and files are yours.  You don't have to wait 2 weeks for Evernote to finally find the last technician who can still figure out how to get you logged in again and give you access to your notes.

    - I'm not big into nested folders but I know you can have them with Obsidian.  Obsidian's structure is totally based on the file system of the hardware you are using.  So you can nest folders anyway you want.  I have some nested folders.

The one negative is that the obsidian.md web page documentation is not great for a beginner.  So getting started can be disconcerting, at first.  But you quickly find lots of videos and outside contributors who do explain how everything works, very well.

Sending an email to Obsidian is NOT a native feature.  I do miss that.  There are various recommendations on how to add this capability to Obsidian but none of them are straightforward solutions.

this version of the application just keeps loading and says "please wait" is there a way to solve this problem?

Try following this thread.  It took 2 weeks for me to get this resolved but I finally got someone in support who could fix the "please wait" problem.  I have been successfully using version 8 now for 12 months.  So there is hope!!

As someone in the above thread states, if your issue finally gets escalated to:  Ana P, then you are in good hands and she will resolve the issue.

Nice summary! Thanks for taking the time and also sending it to EN on proper developer/support channels. Hopefully they hear you.

I've been stumbling through the use of V10 for the few months and it's usable, but definitely slower than it used to be. I miss the speed with which I could move in v6 and sometimes I go back to Legacy 6.25 in Windows to get certain things done.

My biggest gripe is probably the 50 note limit.

That and the fact that mobile for Android appears to be in VERY bad shape, judging from the almost endless stream of very low reviews in the Play Store. It's so bad that I'm actually concerned for the future of Evernote. I've seen no indication from EN that they are even aware of the lambasting they are taking there from their customers, although I can't imagine they've not noticed. But there's no response from EN that I can see anywhere. Half of my time on EN is mobile and so I've turned off all autoupdates and am manually selecting 100+ apps to update, one at a time, in my Samsung Note 10+ just to avoid an update to Evernote.

My patience on that point is getting thinner and thinner, I must admit. Evernote should communicate back to their userbase on their crappy mobile experience.  The last meaningful video from management on mobile seems to be from a year ago.

    image.thumb.png.630d653259351c884123ed8c64bf8de9.png

Meanwhile, check these reviews out... These are just from the last 24 hours and they are almost all one star, maybe 2.

    736997032_reviews2021-06-29_11-59-08.thumb.png.eec7a7f66c8863d5ad5cbfa081e5ee3d.png

EN should start talking to their users about this or they are going to find themselves in a tight spot, IMO, and having a real tough time recovering from the negativity the mobile app is generating, at least on the Play Store.

Also, I'd really like to get back to letting my phone upgrade itself for a change.

WOW!!  Thank You for pointing out how bad the Playstore reviews are!  OF COURSE WHY WOULDN'T THEY BE!!!

This app isn't going to survive with reviews like that.  The overall rating is down to 3.8.  I don't consider trying new apps unless they are over 4.0 and typically need to be 4.3 or 4.4.

I CANNOT BELIEVE a fantastic product like Evernote was allowed to be "updated" with no project plan.  When I read the CEO's view that you just let the developers go without a plan - I KNEW THAT WAS BAD NEWS.  BUT I HOPED someone would come in and rescue them.

Since I upgraded to Android 11, I've seen quite a few apps who have gone downhill and have been abandoned, looks like EN is going to be another one.  BUT GIVING UP ON THIS APP, is going to hurt ME A LOT MORE!!  : (

FYI.  I have not upgraded EN on my primary Android phone, a Samsung Note 10+, either.  With a Note 10+ you can now specify specific apps, you do NOT want to get updated automatically.  Pull up Evernote in Playstore.  Click on the 3 dots in the upper right corner.  The last option on the menu is: "Enable Auto Update".   Uncheck the box beside "Enable Auto Update".  It does work.  I've had that setting in place for Evernote since last summer.  All my apps get updated automatically except for the ones where "Enable Auto Update" is UNCHECKED.

  12. Web Clipper used to work as an ADD ON in Firefox on my PC.  Or there was a third party addon that worked REALLY WELL.  Why did Evernote break this???  VERY FRUSTRATING!

One time I was able to clip the article but it was trash, ads were mixed in.  Then the next 2 times I tried, clipper would just spin.  I'm now using the ADD On, Tranquility, to format articles. Then I cut and paste.
