For the love of gods, stop updating the app every 5 seconds

The frustration for me is that it literally interrupts me while I'm working in another application. No other app on my mac does this. And I can't figure out how to turn it off. I often use Evernote in conjunction with other apps, so I don't want to quit it every time I'm not using it for awhile. But I think I'm going to have to. Please advise if you know there's a way to shut off the update interruptions. thanks!
