They do like cashflow though,  so if there was a way to add a feature and attract more customers you can bet they'd do something.  The fact they haven't - yet - just means they have other priorities and maybe some technical problems.

Sure, they could have many reasons for not caring.  You have named one.  I agree that is a possible theory for why they do not care about this problem.  But let's not really worry to much about the level of concern. 😉  Cheers!

That these links are missing from the mobile clients whereas they exist on the desktop clients tells me it is probably not that simple.

The fact that podcast apps do this routinely, as well as calendar, email and rival note taking apps, tells me it is a matter of developers not wanting to implement it.  Could be some philosophy they hold, could be various things, but since they don't address the question nor bother to implement the fix, I think it's fair to just assume it's because they don't care.  Cheers.

iOS apps run inside of sandboxes. The iPad supports sharing to swap information between apps, but AFAIK no direct file links.

It's true that all file storage is sandboxed.  However, you can pass information to other applications with the "Share" button and this can pass links and even entire files.  The formatting of these links is up to the developer.  Evernote iOS could certainly be told to open certain entries via the Share feature.

  4. When I create an internal note link in Evernote, it does the correct thing, UNTIL I copy the link and try to paste it somewhere else.  Then it apparently intercepts the actual internal link and instead generates an external link to evernote.com.  I don't want to go to a website, or I wouldn't have made it an internal link.  I want a link that opens Evernote.  This works fine on my desktop.  Is this not a possibility on iPad?  Thanks for any help.

Sure it would - but if these guys would build everything self explaining, the forum would be deserted.

No chance to meet nice other users, no exchange of the latest hack … 🙀

That's a beautiful perspective, but I'd rather continue working on my project than have to deal with an Evernote bug personally.  :-). And yet here I am!  LOL

    Glad this worked.

Probably they ask for permission when you install, but usually apps don’t ask when they just update an existing app.

Since Mojave these settings play an important role for all Mac apps. When you don’t read much about Mac malware, these settings are one of the reasons.

Not complaining about being asked, but if you need permissions and know how to check and see you don't have them and the user is asking for it, wouldn't it make sense then to point them to the preferences?  Anyhow, I got mine baby.  Cheers

@wealthychef Works on my Mac / BigSur 11.5.2

Have you enabled every option in the Macs settings, Security, tab privacy ? I am thinking especially about granting full disk access.

I had not, but enabling it fixed my problem!  Many thanks this was such a long-awaited feature.  Why didn't they announce this to the people that give a damn about it on this forum?  Rude.  🙂

Interesting that Evernote did not ask me to update these settings.  I would have expected Evernote to prompt me for this.   anyhow, I'm thrilled to get this broken functionality back!  I can finally go back to the standard version.

    Hi everyone,

I think they just fixed it:

I tested it on my home PC and it works! Can anyone else confirm that it works with the 10.20 version before I mark this topic as solved?

"Expanded link support in the editor - web addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses are auto-converted to links. Links will open local files and in default apps (ex: Zoom). Link detection improvement (e.g. recognize twitch.tv and google.com.vn as web URL domains w/o needing https://)"

I tested it on my Mac and while it tries to work, it does not work for me actually yet.  It will not open any file:// links no matter how I try.  But it's hopeful that it's claiming to want to...

I literally had hundreds but more likely thousands of file and folder links which Evenote has just removed, not only that but it will no longer let me add them back.  It will be on the slow burner for now but I'm looking for an alternative, this is the last straw.

One alternative is to downgrade to an older version of Evernote.  Contact tech support and they will give you a link to an older version that still supports file:// links.  That's what I do.  It sucks but there is nothing else out there to compete and paraphrasing one user here, "companies don't do things for their customers, they do things for their bottom line."   Don't hold your breath on this one, nobody is listening. 😜  Cheers!

Please use the upvote button to bump up this post. Maybe they will implement this "feature" sooner when there are more upvotes.

You can also fill in the survey (under the Help button in V10) to let them now this feature is being missed in V10.

The latest version contains an option to do the opposite:  import a whole folder now without linking to it.  I still use Evernote Classic because of Evernote's breaking this feature.

I've had a good run with Evernote but Obsidian (https://obsidian.md/) checks many more boxes for my needs and it's free. Of course it has collapsible sections and bullets.

Thanks for sharing that!  Now that I just realized Evernote stopped supporting links to files on my hard drive, I'm pissed and moving off this heap of *****.  Obsidian looks amazing, and being based on markdown, you can have your own data and Evernote cannot break it.  Like they just broke my data.  I had to downgrade to version 7.  And yes I really want those collapsible bullets and other features of obsidian.  I hope it works!

Is there an export from Evernote to Obsidian?

Have been thorougly looking for a decent external editor or mindmapping software that collapses lists. The only one doing a decent job on this area is Onenote, but of course it would be ridiculous connecting a Onenote page to evernote. Actualy in my opinion there's a number of things that note taking software is obviously just supposed to handle on itself. One of those is the ability of collapsing lists.

If you are looking at mindmapping software, all of them collapse lists that I've seen.  That's kind of a major deal with mindmaps and other heirarchies.  Why is this hard Evernote?  I'm surmising that the Evernote code base is a big fat mess of spaghetti code and adding a feature like this is a year long project of fixing bugs and patching bad code.

@wealthychef  Probably not the solution you are looking for by the keyboard shortcut F2 is "Rename", which highlights the entire title for renaming.

Actually that does help a ton!  Using F2 is awkward on a Mac but much easier than mousing to the title field and clicking, in my opinion.  I can now do what I want, which is open and write a complete new note using only the keyboard.  I still think Evernote is doing it wrong but now I can just not care.  :-)  Thanks!

  14. When I write, I want to start in the title.  I like to type a title first for most entries, then write about the title in the body.

But Evernote always starts me in the body of the note first.  This is worse because I cannot just tab to the title field from the body.  If I were to start in the title, I could just type Command-N, type the title, hit Tab to move to the note body, and type the content, all without touching a mouse or menu directly.  This is fast and desirable.

At least give me an option to behave this way.  Putting the cursor in the body to start is backwards because who writes like that?  :-)

    Please!  Thanks.

Please add this feature! Or maybe make it possible to embed a WorkFlowy list right into an Evernote note?

I don't think the magic of Workflowy lies in the data format.  The magic lies in how they display it.  So to do what you ask would be very difficult, as it would require executing workflowy within Evernote, literally.

Contrary to the claims of others, I would think expandable lists are not that hard to implement, but my observation of how Evernote handles bullet lists is that they are doing something very weird with their formatting that does not play well with others.

What I'm doing now is using MindNode.  To get a list from Evernote into it, I have to copy/paste from Evernote into a plain text file (BBEdit) and save that file with ".md" extension for "markdown" format.  I then open that with MindNode and I get a beautiful mindmap with collapsible outline.

On the off-chance that product management read this thread then I'd like to add my support for the text toggling (text collapsing) feature.

Long term Premium user and I love Evernote but some long notes with different sections of information are impractical to visualize or navigate without this feature. For some of my technical notes, I have to use Notion because it makes the information so easy to consume & navigate (isn't this one of the main objectives of a note-taking app ?).

This feature has clearly got a lot of interest and requests so please include it so we don't have to use additional tools which fragment our workflow.

    Thanks

Your point about toolchain fragmentation is a great one.  I currently use Evernote, OmniFocus for my personal organization.  I recently added MindNode to get this "collapsible outline" feature (plus a lot more!).

...As a matter of interest,  which text collapse apps work this way?  Sounds more like mind-mapping,  which Evernote doesn't include - and in any event seems to me this requires a major rewrite of a core feature of something that's in daily use 24/7 by hundreds of thousands of people...

There are a few out there.  Google "collapsible outline app" for which ones.  Mind mapping is usually just another way to view an outline, actually.  They are interchangeable.  I don't think it would take much of a rewrite.  But neither of us knows that.

We haven't seen any action for the Evernote note editor

    >> It is still a very good one and I'm out looking for a tool that will do this for me

Various word processors - I use Apple Pages
The documents are stored in Evernote as note attachments

OK, I will find another add-on tool, thanks!  I'm looking at workflowy maybe.  I didn't know Pages would do that.  Sounds cool but in testing a bullet list in Pages, I don't see it being able to collapse anything.

    Hi All,

You may have noticed that all threads requesting the ability to use text collapse/outlining have been merged into this thread, regardless of platform specificity.

This was done in order to better enable us to quantify and qualify user requests, and amplify their voice.

While this does not mean this is a feature that will be coming, we certainly want to relay user feedback/sentiment to our various teams.

Moving forward, please put all commentary and votes for the ability to use text collapse/outlining here!

Is this idea dead?  It is still a very good one and I'm out looking for a tool that will do this for me.
