As already posted, Shottr replaced Skitch within 5 minutes after I installed and tested it.

It does everything, plus a lot more, with new code, a clean interface and optically impressive results. Just one example: The Blur tool lets me choose between options, for example to blur text only. Try this in Skitch:

Killing outdated code is not disrespect - it is a sign to take on responsibility. Not maintained code is a disaster waiting to happen - especially in the case of Skitch that has its own access to the cloud storage.

I've now tried Shottr and good things, but not everything I get out of Skitch. The instant OCR is great though. And for the record, if you're gonna kill the code, kill it. Don't leave it half-assedly lurking around, officially supported but ignored, and to your point, not-maintained.

You just need to take a look at Skitch to know how outdated it was. The annotation tools were probably the clumsiest ever invented, the pixel graphics of annotation text just ridiculous. If you ask me, they did humankind a service by taking it offline.

About the attitude towards legacy users, I don’t think there is any. You sidelined yourself by sticking to unsupported software. Why should your personal hobby to run ancient code bother others ? The future of the service is elsewhere, that’s were the focus is. You dropped yourself off the screen.

Don‘t expect any attention now when the time is up, just do what you want. There is a clear migration path to v10. Take it, or take care of an alternative. 11 days and counting.

Evernote has shown disdain for legacy users for years in a variety ways. You don't have to agree with me if your experience hasn't been the same, but there's really no need to mount a personal attack on me regarding my "personal hobby." Skitch has always been ugly as sin, but at the time Evernote purchased it, it was a perfectly usable and the code was obviously valuable to them. For my purposes, it has continued to work fine and is a standard part of my workflow for quick and dirty communication/capture.  If you're gonna kill something, kill it. Then I'll move on, because sure—there are a multitude of alternatives and I will begrudgingly switch to one of them. But don't half-ass it.

I don't know, I've just used Skitch for a long time and it's just a natural part of my workflow. I don't remember why or when I started using it, but I don't think Evernote had built in screenshot tools at the time and they were promoting Skitch for that purpose. I wasn't even really aware that it does now, but I'll look into it.

Exactly. Skitch was a great tool. Then Evernote bought it and basically ignored it and just made it this clunky, half-a**ed integration that makes little sense from a usability standpoint. This is typical of Evernote, tbh. Don't give a sh*t about legacy users of either tool, but they have me held captive because of my extensive library in both apps. I keep threatening to leave, but that will take a lot of time and a herculean effort to migrate my stuff...and they know it, so they just continue to go their merry way and scr*w all of us who have been on board practically since the beginning.

  4. I agree. But pretty much over all, I find Evernote doesn't really give a sh*t about its users and what they want. I've spent years now not being able to read my Skitch doc name. Figured there must be a setting somewhere but kept putting off looking for it until it became a petrified pile of dog ***** in the corner that I stopped noticing. I finally went to find the setting today, and surprise—there isn't one. Thanks, Evernote. Knocked it out of the park again, leaving an excellent tool to languish in the corner with the dog turds.

  5. I too have been waiting for this feature.

I've used Evernote for a long, long, long time. I started migrating to DevonThink at one point, but lost interest/energy halfway through. I have no love left for Evernote. I'm still here because it's hard to leave. I feel I'm in an abusive relationship, not to downplay an ACTUAL abusive relationship.

In brief, Evernote doesn't give a flying sh*t what its users want/need. End of story.

Please don't use all caps.  That is the Internet equivalent of shouting.

Be patient a while longer.  The new CEO, Ian Small, is directing a complete rewrite of the core Evernote so that all platforms will have the same basic feature set.

Guess what? I AM SHOUTING! AND DON'T MAN 'SPLAIN ME ABOUT THE INTERNET, I'm fully aware of what my usage means. And if we're doling out typography advice, please don't insert 2 spaces between your sentences, that's a moldy leftover of mono-space typewriter days.

And I will believe that Evernote has any interest in anything about its users other than their subscription $$ when...well, based on past experience, pretty much never. This feature request thread is SEVEN YEARS OLD! Evernote was once one of my favorite tools, I've been using it pretty much from the start. Now it just pisses me off at least once every time I use it. This particular thing —NO FIND AND REPLACE— is, again, TOTALLY RIDICULOUS.

    What's not returning:

    • Home screen and home screen sections - primary navigation has been moved to the tab bar
    • Presentation mode - this will still be available on desktop clients
    • Suggested note titles
    • Note "draft" mode
      • In v7, when you created a note you needed to save it. If you tapped cancel, you'd have the option to delete or save.
      • In v8, when you create a note, you tap done to save the note. If you decided you didn't want the note, you can delete it. This should cut down in inadvertent data loss.

Whelp, there you go. Ok, my bad. They did tell us. But they still deleted an important feature with no explanation. And they still told terryjbenzie to come here to complain about it, the place where user issues apparently come to die. And not for nothing, I'm still pissed about Evernote Food being discontinued. And finally, still really smarting from the end of the Direct Image URL/copy shared URL feature which used to be a significant part of my workflow for digital QA. I still use Evernote, but I do not have warm fuzzy feelings for the company behind it anymore.

My group has delayed updating our work devices to v8.  This decision was because of various factors,  including Presentation Mode.  We find it's better to be cautious with updates, instead of crushing and troubling

I don't disagree and tend to follow that same rule of thumb regarding updates, but honestly I would never in a thousand years have expected a feature to be removed in this manner. It's kind of dumbfounding, honestly. Perhaps Evernote could have flagged the update regarding the features that would no longer be available, v. promoting new ones that no one asked for. Or perhaps they could chime in here and explain the rationale or do ANYTHING to acknowledge the issue.
