Is there a global shortcut (mac) to use the scratchpad?

Right now I'm using Ctrl + CMD + N and I get the following:

I thought that was my scratchpad but when I open it the content isn't there, so I guess this is different than a scratchpad. Is there a way to add content with a shortcut straight to the scratchpad? Right now I'm finding the scratchpad widget redundant since when I have a task or idea I just use that shortcut.
