I quit evernote

Evernote is not free anymore for 3 machines : imac, macbook + iphone

so I will stop using evernote.

Apple is using a basic but sufficient application : textedit with icloud

and I will seek for an alternative

THE PROBLEM IS THAT EVERNOTE WAS NOT RELIABLE, because they change suddenly their conditions...

The Basic account continues to be free

We can continue to use all our devices.  I added more details here

I make use of iCloud too; as a Evernote backup and have access to all my notes. These can be accessed by all my devices.

It's the departure of Phil Libin that led to the downturn. Evernote used to add new features to the high end and sometimes add formerly high-end features to the free accounts. This reversal of that trend in addition to the fact that many user suggestions that are not hard to implement are still not being added tells me that the new features are no longer happening. They're trying to get more money from premium users without paying the programmers to improve the apps and services. With all the competition these days in software and cloud services, this does not bode well for the "hundred year company" plan. It's called "Ever" note because you're supposed to store things there "forever". I never fully believed that but I appreciated the goal. Now I don't even believe the goal.

I am quitting too. I logged into Evernote yesterday and suddenly all my bulleted and numbered lists have been reordered so they aren't comprehensible lists anymore (in all notes that have lists). This is a massive problem and I can't get help anywhere; tech support is nowhere to be found. As soon as I figure out how I'll even be able to do my work as normal and my state of denial is over, I will start migrating over to OneNote. I cannot understate my disappointment in Evernote right now, not because of this bug, but because of the utter lack of support I have received.

Hi.  Whether or not it was his choice to leave,  Uncle Phil was quoted in several interviews over a period as not being interested in staying on as CEO long term.  I can understand the sentiment (his,  not yours) because the guys who specialise in 'blue sky thinking' - innovation / development / paradigm-shifting stuff that gets a lot of early attention - are often the worst kind of person to do long-term strategic thinking in an established company.  There are too many meetings,  too much paperwork...  these guys are visionaries,  not bean counters.  Different talent required.  Enter a guy who's already run company operations successfully.

On your other point,  I've seen no shortage of developments in all the product tiers - remember the difference between them is mainly one of limits,  not features;  so everything that the Premium system gets*,  so does Basic.  And without starting the whole discussion over again,  Basic is a free product,  designed as a tryout and a taster for the paid options.  Evernote doesn't need a bunch of users continuing to use their sync and server cycles who will never get around to paying for the service.  They could do so as a charity,  but wouldn't survive as a company.  So to get email / OCR / higher limits and various other bells and whistles they are encouraging folks to pay.  Adding any of that to Basic for free makes no commercial sense whatsoever.  Welcome to the Real World!

* As a Premium user,  I get frequent upgrades and bugfixes throughout the year - other than MS Windows OS updates I don't know of any other major software provider that has a similar policy.

gazumped -- that looks like a lot of support options but none of them works for me. The ticket form doesn't go through; it leads to a loading page that loads forever and there is no confirmation or ticket number given. I've seen other people have that same problem. The "contact us" page leads to just a link to the "support" page, where I fill in all the drop-downs, get to "Report a bug," and then it just says to submit a ticket (with no link to the ticket page, by the way). Back to the same problem. Also, I see no "chat" option on the Contact Us page or anywhere else. I do not have a Twitter account, and I shouldn't have to make one to get support. Besides, if Evernote's own website gets me nowhere, why should I believe Twitter will? This forum is the only place I have found where I can type out what's happening.

Here is the ticket loading page. I've seen others post screenshots that look exactly the same, so it isn't just me. I have tried several times over multiple days and on different wifi systems, etc.

Well,  it was one of the options I quoted...  as to Twitter,  you can always delete your account if that doesn't get you help,  but it does seem like Evernote were offering it as an olive branch to anyone having the problems you descrbe...

As to your problems,  I don't know of anything current that would cause the issue - have you verified via EN Web that your notes are affected?  If this is a display issue on your device,  then power cycling it may fix things;  if not,  an uninstall/ reinstall would be an option,  including maybe a full database re-download from the server.

If all your notes are affected,  then it's maybe device or OS related - can you confirm the details for both?
