Suggestion - Image Optimisation

TimBUK

Idea

I have a product on my Mac - JPEGmini which is amazing at reducing the overall size of JPEG files.

It would be good if there was a way to ensure that webpages and other images I gather could be (if I selected) run through JPEGmini before being added to a note.

Just ran against the Evernote database on my Mac and removed 100MB - not huge.. But significant. (1.8x improvement apparently).

Hi.  Evernote sensibly (IMHO) concentrates on core functions that everyone can use.  More specialised bells and whistles that are of interest to some,  but not all users tend to be left to add-on software like the app you already use.  There are 'facilitator' apps too,  like IFTTT and Zotero that help glue Evernote to third party processes which may help,  but I don't see this becoming part of Evernote anytime soon...

Sorry @Gaz, but I disagree.

As all of our EN accounts grow over time, Evernote needs to develop ways to better compress the DB/Files/Images that it stores on our drives (HDD and SSD).  The amount of space any app uses on our local drives is a CORE function by definition.

For example, Microsoft addressed this issue many, many years ago by offering a feature to compress selected folders.

Yes, this made access a bit slower (at the time), but it freed up a great deal of drive space, if the user needed it.

OK - entirely your right to disagree.  I think it actually depends on what feedback Evernote get from their various surveys and focus groups (or whatever they use) - if compression starts showing up as a 'must have' - or even a 'nice to have' they might easily surprise me!  :)

If Evernote planners are wise, they will recognize and anticipate problems/issues and fix them before they become widespread.

When many  more users start complaining that they don't have enough room on their local drives to store their Evernote notes (and related images/attachments), it may be too late, even though the issue is by then obvious.

GrumpyMonkey, myself, and others long ago highlighted this issue, and suggested at least a choice of "selective sync", storing the full Note locally only for selected Notes (like EN iOS does today).
