A Syncing Compliment for Evernote

Recommended Posts

I just thought it would be nice to publicly thank Evernote for a job well done! I had to flip to a replacement phone this week and after carefully Syncing my entire account to the EN Servers, then wiping the old cell, I had zero problems accessing all of my notes on the replacement cell. I'm not missing a single one!

A bit, Pete. But, my EN use case is literally a medical neccessity to keep track of really mundane stuff that's of zero value to anyone else, should I get hacked. (Well, that and my "Reading Note's to Self," lol!

I understand your thinking :-)

The way I look at privacy, especially with Google, is that any info they can glean from your stuff they'll use somehow: either to target customised ads @ you, or they can divulge it to anyone they like. My position is this (hope you're not offended): when I am in the toilet doing my thing, I have nothing to hide, yet I would not want to do it in a public place with the door wide open. But that is what one gets with Google & Dropbox.

I don't like to splash out money either if I can help it, but sometimes one has to, a little bit.

Here's my set-up:

I have installed VeraCrypt (it's free) & have mounted a volume big enough for my data. That volume is protected with a strong passphrase. When my PC is switched off that data is inaccessible to anyone who would get hold of my PC, unless they have a zillion years to crack the passphrase.

Every day I back up my data in the VC volume in the cloud with Wuala. That back-up is encrypted with another strong passphrase. So my data is secured with 2 strong passphrases.

Wuala uses zero-knowledge encryption, is located in Switzerland & has redundant servers in France & Germany too. Its service used to be free for the 1st 5 Gb but is premium since this year. However, it only costs € 9/year for 5 Gb, € 30/year for 20 Gb, etc going up to 2 Tb.

SpiderOak is free for the 1st 2 Gb (not much) and is more or less (slightly less?) as secure as Wuala, according to reports. You probably checked them out.

So, if in the future you are looking for alternatives to GD & Dropbox, check out Wuala.

BTW, I have no relationship with Wuala whatsoever, I am just very pleased with them.

A bit, Pete. But, my EN use case is literally a medical neccessity to keep track of really mundane stuff that's of zero value to anyone else, should I get hacked. (Well, that and my "Reading Note's to Self," lol! ) I try not to put in anything that could personally or financially hurt me or anyone in my family, should I get hacked.

At worst it could cause me some embarrassment as some notes do contain things like the medications I'm on, or what I need to discuss at my next specialist appointment. And while that would be most unpleasant, it's something I have to do with serious MS memory issues. I tested several note-taking apps before trusting any of them, including EN, enough to put that kind of info in my notes.

As for Google Drive and Drop Box, I spent over a year checking opinions here on the Forum, researching them elsewhere online, and testing them with completely non-personal info, like magazine articles and nonsense letters. At some point I had to weigh risk versus need and choose... The paid services that have the best consumer reviews and the strongest security features, are just out of my budget range for the forseeable future. When I can, I'll switch to one of them.

To sum up, yes security worries me, but sometimes you just do what ya gotta do. ☺

Aren't you concerned about privacy with GD & Dropbox ??
