Make search work offline on Android

mwlodarski

Idea

It seems to me that search does not work offline on Android.

Notes do not show up.

Saved searches from shortcuts show wrong notes.

Can you make search work offline?

Not only would it make using Evernote offline possible, but it would also improve programme speed when online.

OK - I can report that I chose Airplane Mode on the S3,  searched for a keyword and found an offline searchable note.  I was able to open the note,  which was text and variously clipped pictures and see the full content.  I also opened notebook view and went to that offline notebook to browse the notes - it took quite a few seconds to show me a list of notes,  but after that I could browse the notes and open whichever I chose.  Offline searchable seems to be working well for me...

Hmmn.  I'd guess that this is because a saved search is database-wide.  I managed to make a saved search work by filtering the search focus down to the offline notebook.  It should be possible to save specialised offline searches,  or -given the limited number of saved searches available- maybe to save the search strings to copy and paste into the search box.  Now sure how feasible or practical that would be,  but the possibility does exist.

Do you have enough storage space on your device to hold the complete database?  I have a smaller notebook which is marked for offline searching,  and I rotate the notes in that notebook so that anything I need for meetings, visits etc is available.  The feature works on my Samsung Galaxy S3.

Can you go into Airplane Mode and check if the search works for you?

I cleared the cache but no luck. Before I uninstall Evernote from the phone and remove 5 GB of data it would be great if you could confirm that search works for you in Airplane Mode on your SGS3.

Many thanks in advance

If you have enough space,  have synced successfully and still have any problems,  I'd suggest clearing the cache (Settings > Search and Storage > Clear Cache).  -That doesn't affect the offline notes.

If that fails,  then uninstalling and reinstalling the app is the next apparent step,  though (AFAIK) that will also remove all offline notes - which in this case is a good thing,  because I'd suggest you need to rebuild the offline note storage.

Offline searches don't work on Android normally,  because the notes are stored on the server,  and with larger databases the device may not have enough storage space.  All you have is an index to permit searches.  It is possible to select one or more notebooks and set them as 'offline searchable' so the full contents will be downloaded to the device - see Evernote's Notebooks page and tap the three dots to the right of the name.
