windows 8 Evernote for Windows 8 won't sync (activity log included)

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I've just downloaded the app for Windows 8 and it won't fully sync - it syncs the same 6 notes then crashes, giving the message 'synchronisation failed' without any further details. Syncs fine on the web. I create all my notes on my iPhone 6.

I've had a look at the activity log and I can see that something's going wrong at the end, but I don't understand it at all. Is anyone able to make sense of the below and offer me their thoughts?

Thanks so much!

Helena

Hi - Do you have a working version of your account on any other Windows desktop?

Hi gazumped, thanks for replying so quickly to my post. I've just installed the app on my mother's Windows 8 laptop and it seems to sync fine. What does this mean?

Hi Helena.  Well,  if you can get Evernote to sync correctly on another computer,  you automatically have a local backup of your database that we can copy from one machine to the other.  This shortcuts the need to download the whole database again on a second machine,  and may get around whatever technical gremlin is preventing you syncing.  I say 'may',  because there are several others with apparently perfect modern computers who have a mysterious barrier against completing a sync.  Let's hope you don't fall into that category!

So:  if you have any portable storage handy,  it would be very useful to take a copy of the database folder from the working computer.  You'll find it here - C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\Evernote\Evernote\Databases.  Make sure you File > Exit Evernote before copying.

With that in hand,  I'd suggest you go back to your own machine and download Revo Uninstaller - it's a tool for removing software and doing a deep-clean of any temporary working files that might be hanging around.  - http://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_uninstaller_free_download.html  (The free version is fine,  but you can use the 30-day free option on the Pro version if you want.)  Install and start it,  and choose Evernote to remove your current installation completely.

Restart your computer and go to https://evernote.com/products/ to download the installer again.  Get that set up and log in to your existing account.  See whether sync works.  If it does,  fine - you're cured!

If not,  File > Exit and go back to C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\Evernote\Evernote\Databases on your own machine and rename it.  Copy the backup from your other computer there,  and log back in.  Add a new test note and try to sync...

Sorry that's a bit lengthy - hope it helps!

Wow, this is fantastic and so detailed, thanks so much for taking the time. I'm away now for a couple of days so will try all of these things when I get back and let you know if it works. Thank you again

Gazumped's post on this worked! Thank you. It seems as though simply uninstalling and re-installing using the windows control panel function doesn't work but using http://www.revounins...e_download.html (I used free version but used advanced settings to search for all stray files). Once I had uninstalled every file using this program, I then re-installed and it synced my Windows 8 laptop properly. It was all very odd as my Windows 8 desktop has always worked but my other machine (the laptop) didnt. Anyway fixed now - so thanks

@gazumped

had the same problem, did as you suggested - and for now it works.i only changed one thing: as there is a newer version available, although as beta, i installed the evernote 5.9.7.9754 after running revouninstall. simply because i was tired of installing and uninstalling the 5.9.6.9494 again and again, and receiving just an automated "we got your message, we're working on it" from the support yesterday. not fast enough for me. luckily they included a link to this discussion, so i found my soluiton thanks to you! i hope it'll work smooth from now on.

thank you!!

i'm new to evernote and just beginning to explore the possibilities with this program, but so far i like it very much!
