Evernote for Mac 6.0.4 Beta 2 Released

SoftwareMarcus

Idea

We added a lot of really great features and fixes that we wanted to get your feedback on as quickly as possible so we just released Beta 2.

As I mentioned in my Beta 1 post we released the following items in Beta 1:

Bug fixes and other improvements:

  • Fix for note content not displaying (blank notes). This has been a really hard one to reproduce and fix but we think we've got most of the situations covered now. We really need your help in figuring out if we finally have this one fully fixed or not so please use this beta if you are still seeing this issue.
  • Improved icon visibility.
  • Local files can be opened directly. We pop up a security message first.
  • Resolved various sync and crashing issues.

Work Chat improvements:

  • Added the ability to sync with Gmail contacts.
  • Added ability to block Work Chat contacts.

Beta 2 adds:

  • Performance fix - If you were seeing unbearable typing speed and you have multiple Evernote accounts and switch between them, we think we found a fix.  Let us know if this fixes your performance issues.  This does not fix slow scrolling.
  • More fixes around the blank note issue.
  • Presentation Mode improvements:

    • Back by popular demand and specifically asked for by the forums we’ve added back multiple note presentations.   I know there was a lot of discussion around this one so please try it out.
    • Export presentations to PDF
    • Presentation pop-up menu to make it easy to get to all of your favorite presentation features.

We want to release an update that fixes the blank note issue to customers as soon as possible so if you have this issue or know of someone that was seeing it, please have them try this beta out.  We don't want anymore customers to run into this terrible issue.

You can download beta 2 from here: http://bit.ly/1ICU728

I'm a college student trying hard to work on my last week of classes - I LOVE using Evernote but hate this new upgrade. I tried double clicking on the Beta link but I don't know how to make it work.. PLEASE HELP or FIX!!!

I'm using the internet Beta version for now but I would really like my app to work - I work offline often, I do not want to be on the internet. Bring back the old Evernote!

I really don't know the answer to this question, so take it at face value. Is there a way that notes don't always have to be "migrated from previous versions?" Are the versions doing such different things to the formatting that they have to be changed? I'm asking, because it makes life more difficult because I can't downgrade to a version that I know and trust (like when renaming attachments doesn't work or I can't seem to get PDFs to show up inline).

It just feels so frustrating to feel like functionality for the user in their daily lives is taken for granted because of gimmicky (at least in my case) features keep being added. I know it's worked out for some people, but I still don't understand the concept of Presentation mode, and chat–I don't need, nor do I want another platform to have to look for messages in, and the icon takes up space that could be used to show more of the tags on a note. Don't get me wrong, interoperation and intercommunication with other parts of life isn't bad, but some of the choices to expand are worrisome, especially when there are functionality issues. I'm not saying you guys were responsible for it, but I honestly had to take a moment and pause when I saw you guys were selling socks. SOCKS. Not socks that track my footsteps and somehow save a daily journal in Evernote, but socks, because (at least from my perspective) you wanted to make some more cash selling merchandise. The selling point of Evernote has never been (and nor should it be) the marketing of bright, green paraphernalia; the selling point has been the product and expansion has come from word of mouth.

I'm sorry for the rant, but I really need you guys to understand (or at least I need to feel like you guys understand) that it's disconcerting to all of a sudden have a day in fluctuation or on hold because there could be something broken with your product.

BUG REPORT:  Recent Search list item for "intitle:" Searches is Not Named Properly

If I do a search for "intitle:evernote" (or any "intitle:") the "Recent Search" list shows the search as "Notes".

Expected Behavior:  "Recent Search" item would be named using the Search terms, e.g.:  "intitle:evernote"

I had the slow-loading-notes issue (nothing in the note content for at least a minute, then a badly formatted version would finally appear). Installing 6.0.4 beta 2 resolved the problem... though at the same time it was a switch from App Store to direct download, requiring a fresh login and completely new sync, so that could also explain the resolution.

Interestingly, on the App Store version, the presentation mode actually did display correctly. Here's a snapshot of the log from (I think) around the time I tried to load a few notes in normal view, then presentation view.

I really appreciate allowing file:/// links. Please could we also get message:// links allowed? They work across OS X and iOS, and are supremely useful.

In fact, if you paste in a raw message:// link, iOS will parse it and make it tappable. OS X doesn't do that, and Evernote won't allow them pasted in the link field.

I've tried the suggestions from this thread (https://discussion.evernote.com/topic/78806-evernote-603-on-mac-extremely-slow/) including waiting for re-indexing (it's been a week). I tried to revert to an older version as well but couldn't successfully uninstall the current version (I also don't have TimeMachine set up). I've also tried the newer beta version. So far, nothing has worked. My evernote is still very slow and I believe it is affecting the overall performance/speed of my computer. Are there any other suggestions or options for fixing this?

Thank you.

BUG REPORT:  Using CMD+ to Increase Font Size Changes All Text to Same Font Size

Expected/Previous Behavior:  When you select text that contains different font sizes and press CMD+, all text is increased by one point size.  Thus, text with different font sizes prior to this action will still have different font sizes.

This was working properly in EN Mac 5.5.2.

For details see:  https://discussion.evernote.com/topic/79246-incrementing-font-size-makes-all-the-text-the-same-size-or-somehow-the-new-evernote-for-mac-makes-the-lack-of-a-zoom-function-even-worse/

I reported this issue with v6.0.3 using Yosemite, and the newest beta hasn't fixed it. Several email exchanges with Jack (requested by him) haven't yet yielded a fix.

I found the exact same solution as you, JM: clicking on a previous note was the only way to get into edit mode in a newly clipped note.

After updating to the beta 2, my Workchat stopped working properly. When I want to share a note through workchat, my Mac starts gearing up CPU cycles and Evernote stops responding. After a couple of minutes the Work chat window pops up but I can't type a name or mailadress since Evernote stops responding again. Is there any way to go back to a stable version of Evernote out of this beta?

I was linked here after posting about blank notes or more accurately, blank notes until a minute or two pass before they load. I usually avoid betas but almost downloaded 6.0.4 Beta 2 because it specifically addressed my problem - until I read Gemfinder's post. My EN is from the App Store so I'll wait until the fix appears there. Get on it ya'll.

I haven't been able to use my work version of Evernote in a MONTH! Ever since "upgrading" to 6 nothing will work. I'm on a Mac OS 10.9.5. I've made every upgrade available (including the new bets) in hopes that it will finally work again. It won't even open correctly.

Problem: I open the application, it launches. The menus appear, but no window. If I click new Evernote window, it crashes. On the odd time I do get a window, it crashes as soon as I try to open a note or notebook. I've let it run overnight (12 hours) and not touched the machine, to "sync my files." I've tried reinstalling, uninstalling, clean installing and nothing works. I've sent in crash reports every time, and there have been a lot. I've even sent an email to your help desk with no response. This is HORRIBLE customer service.

Thank God I haven't "upgraded" any of my home machines or mobile devices. But my work computer is where I use Evernote the most, so not having it available is making me less effective. I'm going to have to begin looking for an alternative.

Did you fix the issue with tables (ticket #540610 submitted in JUNE, 6 months ago)?

Are the tables finally copy-pastable?

No, you didn't.

I wasn't going to update, but my laptop left unattended decided otherwise. As a result:

1) 6.0.3 from the Appstore used 158% of CPU... I don't know what that means and how it's possible, but the laptop had to rest in the fridge like every 5 minutes. So hot it was. So,

2) I deleted it and downloaded 6.0.4. Which almost immedeately informed me that all the 60 Mb of my free allowance are gone and it cannot download any more notes. Before this unfortunate update, I had 38 Mb left. What happened to them?

So,

3) I had to use my points for another month of Premium. This isn't cool at all.

So,

4) I decided to check that table navigation thing. I don't know why but I was quite sure that this time you finally fixed it.

NO YOU DIDN'T.

@Marcus:  Thanks for the quick updates to fix issues, and for the great Release Notes.

I'd like to highlight two features added specifically in response to strong forum feedback:

  1. Links to Local Files
  2. Multi-Note Presentation

Thanks for listening.

We want to release an update that fixes the blank note issue to customers as soon as possible so if you have this issue or know of someone that was seeing it, please have them try this beta out.  We don't want anymore customers to run into this terrible issue.

Hi Marcus, why don't you create a post and stick it to the top of the forum? Some forum members try hard to point to the beta version whenever people report the slow loading problem but it would be much easier if people could see this recommendation right away.

And what about a Blog post on evernote.com?

We've done several things to inform our users:

1. Sent a direct email to all users who may have been affected with instructions

2. Posted a sticky thread on the forum

3. Posted in our knowledgebase

4. Posted on our support homepage

5. Emailed everyone who has contacted support about it

@Marcus or @Jack:  Procedure to Switch from AppStore to Direct Download -- Please clarify

You guys have both stated that to switch all the user need do is to install the Direct Download on top of the AppStore.

I assume this applies to switching from AppStore Versions 6.0 and 6.0.3 TO either DD Ver 6.0.3 or 6.0.4 B2.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Question:  Having done that, does it leave any unneeded remnants from the AppStore install?

I've been hesitant to jump to version 6. When I saw this post I decided to go for it and made a fresh clone of my HD and installed 6.0.4 beta 2. No problems at all (I'm on Mavericks). Ditto on subsequent Macs, all on Mavericks. Heavy user, for business and personal, 11k notes.

As for the UI, I mostly like it (I'm 50 with myopia and presbyopia. Go figure). If you'd change the blue to EN green that'd make it more Evernotey.

Some blunt truth, speaking as a programmer and project manager with 15 released consumer software products:

These repeated releases, betas and posts ("we can't reproduce it") make it look like you are just guessing.  Your user base is very non-technical:  you can't expect many of them to install betas, let alone give meaningful feedback.  They don't know what to tell you.  Also, this is not open-source:  it is retail software that people paid for.  Users of paid software are not your testing department.

Also, if the problem was the App Store sandboxed version, then downloadable betas don't actually test a solution -- they just overwrite the problem.

Suggestions:

  • Reproduce the bug before you release another beta.  This is insanely hard with a rare intermittent bug.  But it generally won't go away otherwise -- it will keep turning up, like a bad penny, in future versions, for months or years, until you deterministically locate its underground crypt and drive a stake through its heart, vampire-style.
  • Reach out to specific users having this problem.  Literally get on the phone with them, ask probing questions about their config.  I see posters are volunteering (e.g. Scopo).  They want to help you.  Test your solutions on just them, before pushing to everyone.  Have them install a version that dumps config information, and have them email that back to you.

This sounds time consuming, and it is.  But in my experience, it is massively faster, and less destructive to your brand, than posting betas on a bug you can't reproduce, and asking non-technical users, "did this work?" "did this work?" etc.  Again, this is consumer retail, not open source.

I hope this level of bluntness is not too harsh.  I truly feel your pain on this, and only learned the right way by doing it wrong.  Best of luck.

  • Level 5*

@Gemfinder:  Well said.  I completely agree.

I've long thought that Evernote should use private end-user Beta groups, who should probably be compensated in some way (like free Premium and/or Business accounts, etc).  As Gemfinder mentioned, users in this group could be properly instructed/trained on how to Beta test and report issues.  And, where needed, provide for one-on-one discussions via online meeting where a developer could actually see and inspect the user's machine.

After the major bugs from the Ver 6.x release are fixed, I think Evernote should sloooooow down, and increase the interval between releases.  Frankly, once, or at most, twice, a year should be sufficient.  This should allow for a better, more-well-thought-out, design, and ample time for both internal testing/debugging, private Beta, and public Beta.  All of which should produce a much more stable product with no material bugs (note I didn't say "bug-free").  Major changes in UI Design should be rare.

Yup - agree completely JM.

Once again, I'd quote Photoshop as a model - it's updated about once a year if that, the core functions work perfectly, every time, for every user, and when new functions are added (rarely), older ones are not removed. Oh, and did I mention that the UI basically hasn't changed in decades, apart from the very occasional subtle touch here and there?

Maybe that's why it has become a standard, and all the other wannabes are just playing catch-up forever.

Cannot embrace the Peniltimate changes. So sad. Loved Penultimate. Now about to cancel my Evernote account. We were so happy!!!! In business, sometimes you must take a loss to keep customers content with the purity of your product. Evernote should revert to the former version and absorb any design loss. They should chalk this up to a learning experience. They would win hearts...and customers.

If so, where are they, and is it OK to delete them?

Great questions.

1) Going from Mac App Store to the Download versions will move your data from the "Container" located at (~/Library/Container/) where all App Store apps store their data to the new location at: (~/Library/Application Support/com.evernote.Evernote).

2) We will also create a back up located at:  (~/Library/Application Support/com.evernote.Evernote/old) but this gets deleted after 2 weeks so it might be a good idea to back it up just in case.

Local notes makes this process more complicated.  Local notes are notes that are only on your computer and they are not backed up or synced to the cloud.  If you don't have Local Notes then you can skip the rest of this discuss.  If you have Local Notes you might want to export them 1st and back them but we will move your local notes over to the new location when going from App Store to Download.  However, if you go back to the Mac App Store we can't migrate them back to the old Container folder automatically because of the rules placed on sandboxing.  You will have to reimport them to your Mac App Store version.  Again, if you don't have Local Note then you don't have to worry about any of this.

The data is exactly the same for both versions.   It's just stored in different places.

Yet another BUG.

If you have a checkbox list with links, then when you are trying to click the checkbox, the link opens.

[] weblink

[] weblink

Just to be clear: it's a new bug. In 5.0.7 these lists behaved as they should, that is, when you click the checkbox, it is marked as done and nothing else happens.
