Offline Chrome app - why only ChromeOS ?

Recommended Posts

I used to be a premium user, but then switched to linux. Since there is no native client (not too keep on the linux alternatives) and the web app is so slow it is not useable as a primary tool, I cancelled the premium-ness of my account and started to migrate all my data away..

Then I realised that there is an offline chrome app - which would probably resolve all the speed issues of the normal web app (although the new beta one seems even slower / less productive than the old one!).

However, this appears to be only for chromeOS - with the normal one available to everyone else is effectively just a bookmark.

I was just wondering why this is and if there were any plans to release it to a wider audience - it seems this would fit the bill just fine for a large number of the linux users who don't currently have a good solution. I know of several people (my company is all linux based) who are being held off evernote or only using it very lightly for this reason.

I am assuming there is no technology that chromeOS has which chrome doesn't that is holding it back - is it sponsored by Google to give the chromebooks an edge over others? It just seems to be intentionally crippling the evernote portfolio, which is a real shame because, to be honest, I haven't found an alternative nearly as versatile.

Thanks for any insight / news on whether we may one day get to use it! :)

Other than at the annual conference (a couple of weeks ago) Evernote is famously  close-mouthed about future plans.  New products are being released in the next few weeks,  but they mainly seem focused on the Business app and its collaborative working environment.  I don't know if the company has any further plans for ChromeOS - it obviously depends on how many new users they might acquire against the cost of developing something for a new market.

Thanks for the reply.

Sorry, perhaps my first post was rambling too much!

But this is exactly my point - they have developed this feature for a very niche market (Chrome OS users) - why not allow the rest of the Chrome / Chromium users (a huge market) benefit from this as well..?

The work has already been done, but it has been crippled.

I should also note, since my original post was quite moan-y, that I do really like the new redesign. It looks lovely (except that it sometimes forgets to load the side bar, meaning I can't do anything until I refresh the tab). It's just *really* slow and is not as good for being productive (seems a bit like form over function). I know that the chromeOS app has the same interface - not ideal, but if it is at least more responsive, then this is still better than the present situation and may make it usable again.

Understood,  but unless the devs do want to make a comment here,  there's no information about whether or when anything more will happen.  Having said that they could also launch a new app tomorrow...

Yea, fair enough! Do the devs ever stop by here? My assumption in asking was that it would probably require someone inside the company to answer.. I assume that some of them are active on the forums?

I assume that they have made the decision for a reason.. just curious as to what it is - or whether they will have good news! :)

The devs tell us they read the forums for ideas and feedback,  but they seldom comment on individual posts.  Evernote has a policy not to share development plans anyway,  because announcing "a better system of X due for release in December" inevitably brings a flood of complaints from those who wanted features A-W updated first,  and the X users will complain about the delays immediately and even more strenuously when the release has to be put off for a month because of another issue.  Evernote meantime have to assign two of the people they were using on the project to answer queries,  so it starts out understaffed...

Anyhoo.  Each new release is a wonderful surprise... mostly.

If you want to find out who the Evernote employees are on the forums, go to the Member Page, click on the "More Search Options" button, and use the filter just above the "Apply Filters" button to narrow things down (it will probably say "Show All" initially). Doesn't break out their specific functions (e.g. developer, PM, support, etc.) but you can spelunk their most recent posts if you want. You can also find "Illustrious" members like gazumped this way. :)
