Any suggestion to perform silent Auto-Updates in a managed environment

We have Evernote 5x deployed in my Windows environment with all default options at the PC level (not at user level). Every time Evernote releases an update, End users calls to our support line because they try to install and it fails.

Looking for a method that will do an unattended and automatic update Evernote every time there is a new release. Goal is to have no user interaction with updates and for the Admins to set it and forget it.

Currently for every release we have to download Evernote, rename to Evernote_5.xxx.exe to Evernote, place into deployment folder, and run script to deploy software.

It would be ideal if Evernote would self update silently.

Any suggestions?

Are you sure you really want all of your users to auto-update before you have a chance to test the new version?

IMO, this is very dangerous for any any software, including Evernote.

In recent times the Evernote update has provided serious bugs and dropping of key features essential to some workflows.

And in some cases, has provided a radical, major change in the UI that many did not like and found confusing.

So, I would recommend that you test the new version of Evernote before rolling out to all your users.

In some cases reversing the changes that have not been possible has either taken some time (several additional releases) or has still not been done. Upgrade everyone without testing at your own risk! At least make sure that before the app is updated, the database is backed up.

As much as it pains me to say this...yes. I used to be a beta tester & gave that up a few years ago. But it's a risk you take with beta testing. However, I've also given up installing the latest update until I see what's posted on the board about it. Sometimes that means I skip some updates in the event that a newer one is released before I update to the previous one b/c I'm going to wait to see if there is any fallout from the newer one. And I always update my database before updating the software.

I agree with the other posters about waiting until the new version is tested in house on a test system.

However to accomplish what you want to do:

Unattended Automatic update: You would need to use group policy on your server to push the app to the computer.  It's been a few years since I have done this so I am sorry I can't be a bit more detailed, try starting here:

How to use Group Policy to remotely install software in Windows Server 2008 and in Windows Server 2003

You would however have to download the EN software and put it on your server so that part would not be automated unless you wrote a scrip in Visual Basic Scrip or similar language to check for and download the newest version.
