Jerky UI in 5.9.x on Nexus 7

I like the look of the new UI, but the animation is horribly jerky on my tablet. 

 

I also have a Nexus 5 phone, and the same thing does not happen. The only difference that seems obvious is that where on the phone UI there is no menu open until you swipe in from the left, on the tablet interface, part of this menu is always present. 

 

When I open any note, even very simple ones with very little text and no attachment, the screen jerks over in three detectable 'bursts' before the note is fully open. 

 

When I do the same on my phone, the note smoothly slides in from the right as I assume it's supposed to.. 

 

I was hoping that a swift update would resolve it.. (the rest of the new look is great, and I'm looking forward to material design elements.) but no luck in 5.9.2

 

Anyone else experiencing this? It really detracts from the otherwise quality feel of the app.
