Evernote to PDF

Hi All,

 

I read several posts about converting evernote notes to pdf. Looks like there are 4-5 free ways and one using cloudHQ for doing this. However, why does it not have something like OneNote (http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/onenote-help/save-as-pdf-HA010064992.aspx) where you can export notes directly to a pdf. I had my entire team almost switch to EN from OneNote except that they need to often send documents to collaborators in pdf format. Any chance that this will be incorporated in future versions?

If I've needed to create a PDF of an Evernote note, I've just chosen the Print option and selected an PDF printer driver from my PC (e.g. Nitro PDF). However, I'm not sure what I would do if I was using my Android tablet...

 

It would be good to extend the Export options to have a "Export as PDF" option.

The problem with any hard -coded 'export' option is that other users will then want it extended to export to JPG/ DOCX/ PNG formats,  some of which are probably proprietary and therefore likely to be expensive if implemented.  "Print to" works fine in desktop if you have a PDF printer installed,  or use an online resource to convert - there's no export option in Android (yet) anyway.  You could export to HTML and convert that to other formats,  or print to (PDF) file and add that file to emails or other applications. Suggestion noted though for the future...

Yup. Cmd-p to print, and select PDF, and you're off to the PDF fuelled races! Built into the Mac OS.

 

If you are on Windows.... I believe there are PDF print drivers you can get for free... perhaps from Adobe. Haven't used a windows machine for that sort of thing in nearly a decade so I have no useful suggestions there.

MS Office applications no have a Save as PDF menu item.  But, in reality, printing to PDF is exactly what Acrobat is all about.  In Onenote, you are mimicing the Print to Acrobat function without the intermediate steps.

If you install Adobe for Windows,  Office (and other apps) get a handy 'convert to PDF' toolbar button as well as the option to print directly to PDF.

Actually, that's not completely accurate. You can save as PDF files, but changing them back to the original format does require an MS Office add-in or 3rd Party software. From the Micrsoft help pages:

Ah,  I see..  the thing about changing back from PDF to Office format is redundant really;  if you 'Save As' to PDF,  you would normally still have the original Saved file in standard office format.  The links are correct that you need extra software to convert PDF to Office,  but in practice you would almost always have the original file.  Saving a PDF file is like printing - it doesn't harm the original content,  just renders it in different form.

Anyways, thank you all for your comments. I installed a pdf printer and have accepted the reality of this situation. Here is the real problem though: in the printing options, I cannot print a selection from that note. Is this too much to ask for?

Sorry - selections require a little more effort..  copy the selection you want to print to a new note,  print that note...

An option in the iOS version wouldn't hurt either. So far my workaround is to export it to iBooks and then email it from there, but this results in me sending a PDF with the filename untitled.pdf.

This is exactly what I do. It took me about an hour to figure this out.

This thread is more than a year old and still there does not seem to be a working solution for iOS. My main intention is capturing a blog post in Evernote and storing a PDF copy of it in a Dropbox folder that is available to my students. 

Asking too much? It works great on macOS, btw.

Since Evernote supports the Print action, you can save a PDF that way. 

1) Open a note

2) Open the share sheet (upward arrow coming out of a box).

3) Select the Print action (bottom row of icons in the share sheet, if it's not visible, tap the "More" button to enable Print)

4) when you see the Printer Options screen, two-finger-reverse-pinch (zoom-in gesture) on the preview (or force touch, if you have a newer iOS device) to open it in full screen. 

5) from the full screen preview, tap the share sheet button (bottom left) to import it to dropbox (or any other application). 

 

It's not elegant, and it looks like a lot of steps, but after you do it once, you'll find it's reasonably quick. 
 

(This is not to say that Evernote shouldn't build in a proper PDF export feature! Just pointing out a relatively easy workaround in the meantime).
