Evernote not saving full resolution pics to android device

Recommended Posts

I have been using Evernote for years, collecting photos in the field. I noticed recently, Evernote is no longer (also) saving the full size resolution photos within my standard photo album. Instead Evernote saves my photos to another folder, and the quality/resolution is horrible. So all photos I have taken recently are worthless, unless viewed on a small device (500k file size).

Am I just having a problem "finding" the full size photos on my Android device?

I do not care about the size/quality within the notes, but I need a full resolution photo for future use within other programs.

Thanks in advance for any help

Hi.  It would help to know what device you have and where the pictures are being stored - in terms of: are they in the native device memory or did you move photos to the SD card.  And what is the folder your pics are being found in?

Hey there,

I'm using a Nexus 7. It has no SD slot, so I see the photos in Nexus 7/Internal Storage/Pictures/Evernote

It was storing a full size image (full size image+thumnail image) also within this file until 4/3/14. Then Evernote just started saving the thumbnail size photos, some as small as 128k.

I have no ability to change any settings of the camera in "settings", even though under "camera settings" it lists "moleskin" and "post it notes". I can't make sense of these options, and don't see anything else to adjust. I have no problems taking pics outside the app.

I would be thrilled if I'm missing something simple, I have 3 months of thumbnails instead of pictures! Thanks...

Have you had a look in your normal camera roll?  Evernote saves/ used to save a backup copy of the main picture there when including it in the database.  AFAIK the folder you quote is meant for the 'snippet' picture,  hence the low-res.

Understood, but for some reason the full size photos were stored there until 4/3/14...not sure why that stopped. The photo's are not stored in my standard DCIM folder with all my stock photos. I've done extensive searching on the device, and I can't find any full size photos from evernote. I guessing I need to start with a full uninstall/install, and go from there. Thanks for your help...

Did a simple test right now: took two photos with Evernote, with 1MP and 5 MP. They were both stored on Pictures/Evernote with two additional small files for the thumbnails. Opening the note on the computer and doing a "Save as" only the thumbnail is saved.

So Evernote is currently saving the original and thumbnail photos on Pictures/Evernote and using only the thumbnail on the actual note.

I did a Save As on an old photo (January 2014) and... surprise! 2Mb. But notes created on and after April (I do not have any for March) I got only thumbnails. It can be seen on the Pictures/Evernote folder as well, until April there is only one file (big) for each phot, afterwards there are always two files, the big and the small.

Looks like Evernote used to put the original resolution photo on the note, but in the current version it is using only the thumbnail.

Can someone else confirm?

Is this a bug or on purpose?

Thank you!

No-one says Evernote is a good place to store your hi-res pictures,  so as long as you have a good quality backup,  or an original stored in Flickr / Picasa / some other bespoke photo gallery,  I'm not sure that this matters.  If Evernote do include a thumbnail or cut down version of mobile client pictures,  maybe that's for bandwidth or upload limit conservation on a mobile platform.  I just saved a 3MB picture into an Android note and got.. a 3MB note,  so I'm still not clear how these thumbnail-only versions happen.  If you can repeat the problem,  please talk us carefully through the steps required.

I used the button with a camera in the left panel, that open ups a camera like view to take the photo, and then creates a note with all photos taken. Same thing creating a note and them using the button with a camera on the upper right hand corner.

The point is that Evernote used to put the original resolution photo on the note, and since march or april it is putting only the thumbnail. We need to know if this is a bug or a new behavior, so we can change our workflows.

Thank you!

I tried my previous experiment twice and still got 3MB notes for 3MB pictures - I can't repeat the behaviour,  so can't comment whether it's a bug or a change.  We still need your detailed steps...

Ops, sorry.

Galaxy Note 10 2014 with Evernote 5.8.5 and Xperia ZL with 5.8.1.

Good to know,  but detailed steps as in "exactly how are you adding photos" - Evernote camera / device camera / cut and paste from app... ??

Hmmn.  You're right - I tend to zap through these queries as quickly as possible and sometimes miss relevant little details...  Sorry about that.  OK I took a 8MP picture with the camera button,  which dumped a 2.2MB file in my camera roll but created a 455KB note;  so clearly a reduced resolution picture is being stored in the note,  though it did create what seems like a full res picture in an 'Evernote' folder on the phone.  That's still not quite as you described it - is it still a problem?

You are welcome...

Well, the point is that Evernote used to embed the full res photo on the note, and since march or april it is not doing that anymore. We need to know if this is a bug or a new behavior, so we can change our workflows accorddingly.

Thank you!

Evernote has been taking quite a few arbitrary executive decisions without prior notice lately - text to speech and public notebooks are no more forinstance.  I'd suggest you assume that this is a permanent 'rationalisation' for the moment,  and look for alternatives,  while also submitting a support ticket (see below) to confirm with support that this is an 'official' change.

Many thanks!

I will do that.

Did you ever receive a response from Evernote about this issue? I'm frustrated with the same problem. I save Google Maps screenshots to notes that I made available offline, in case I don't have a mobile data connection where I'm traveling. But now I can't do that as easily because the high quality images are no longer stored in the notes. Rather, I have to go hunting for them in other folders on my Android phone.

Hello boneycur.

I am sorry, I did not create the ticket...

But you are doing a different thing: you are taking a screenshot on your device, and then how do you create the note on Evernote? I am asking that because if I do take a screenshot on my Android, the file created is already small - low quality. And if I create a note on Evernote and import a large file - high quality image, that is exactly the file I get later, Evernote does not change a bit.

So maybe your problem is on the screenshot itself.

By the way, Google Maps can save maps for offline use, and there are other very good apps, like OsmAnd.
