Evernote for Mac 5.6 Public Beta 1

Jackolicious

Idea

  • Level 5

Friends of Evernote!

We have an incredible release available today. It has more user-requested features/functionality than any single prior release of Evernote for Mac!

Important:

1. This is pre-release beta software. Users will have to manually update to this release for the time being. If you checked the preferences option to update to beta releases, you will be updated automatically soon. If you can't wait, this post is for you!

2. This release requires OS X 10.7+

At Evernote, we believe that speed and stability are essential for productivity. That’s why we’ve completely rewritten Evernote for Mac. It may look familiar but it's significantly faster, more reliable and consumes less energy than ever before.

Speed:
  • Sync is more than 3x faster. Users with lots of shared notebooks and Evernote Business users will see the biggest improvements.
  • New notes sync instantly so they’re immediately accessible on your other devices.
  • Share notes without waiting for a sync to complete.
  • Launch and quit times have been reduced dramatically.
  • New keyboard shortcuts have been added to jump to the note list for easy navigation (CMD + |) and you can now tab between the search field, the note list, current note title and note body.
  • Energy consumption when the app is idle has been significantly reduced.

Stability:
  • We’ve closed over 500 bugs including more than 150 types of crashes.
  • Our crash reporting system has been completely rebuilt.

New features:
  • Tables can now be resized, and have configurable background colors and border styles.
  • Images can be resized right in the note editor. Just click an image and drag the handle in the bottom right corner.
  • Search results are now ordered by relevance.
  • Faster notebook selector at the top of the note list remembers your recently used notebooks.
  • Redesigned checkboxes in the note editor are easier to click.
  • Evernote will now stay logged in by default.

Known issue:
  • Spotlight search is not currently functional

If you see a crash, please send a report! If you see an odd behavior, please post here.

Not sure where to report issues with the beta.

I was in a notebook and tried to create a new note with Cmd-N.

I realized I didn't want it in the original notebook so I changed the notebook associated with my new note with the selector at the top left of the note.

The note vanished!

Since I was actively in notebook A and the note is now in notebook B it doesn't show up.

Should either note move if I'm editing or should change the active notebook...

Can't remember what was done before, but I'm relatively certain it was not this :)

Not liking the option where selected text is highlighted automatically. Isn't always so, but happened a few times when copy-pasting, underlining,...

@mathiepe: That happens in this beta if you select text while holding the cmd-key. It took me a while to figure it out and at first I was annoyed. Now that I am aware of it, I really like it.

Loving the new version for the most part. In particular, thanks a million for making the tables more usable/visually minimal.

However, I'm having problems with frequent crashes. I do most of my work in Evernote, and it has been crashing 5-10 times per day. This started happening when I was on the private beta test (circa early June), and I was hoping it was fixed, but apparently not.

It looks like no one else on this thread has posted a similar problem---any suggestions?

Me too. Not sure it's coincidence but I run Premium and Business on the one machine. Business is steady but when I switch to Premium at least 3-4 crashes today. It's consistently crashing and I sent the logs when promoted to EN.

I'm on premium too. Not sure if that's the cause, but it would be ironic if so!

It won't let me edit the text of a new note.

I created a new note with Cmd-Ctrl-N. Typed a title, assigned a notebook, and added some tags.

But now I can't navigate into the text area to actually type the note. Clicking in the text area does nothing. Neither does going to the note title and hitting Tab.

The editing toolbar appears when I click in the note area, but the insert cursor does not appear. Trying to type there anyway causes a "thunk" sound with each key I hit.

Regarding stability, it has nothing to do with the state of your account (sadly crashes affect free/premium/business :)). What I can say is that our crash reporting system has gotten MUCH better and we will be fixing the most frequent crashes with super-human speed!

Really glad to see the annotation feature getting enhanced – courtesy of Skitch.  The aspect I noticed today was the ability to resize the width of a text annotation – i.e to force text to wrap to a new line.  Good stuff – makes me like Evernote more!  :D

The issue seems to reliably happen me when I switch from Business to Premium.  I work daily say 80% in Business and 20% in Premium, to date (touch wood) no crashes in Business.

Maybe this has been reported; I didn't check all the way through this thread ...

Whenever I try to switch to Tags View, Evernote becomes unresponsive. I then have to force quit it to get it going again.

Thanks.

Others have reported a problem with the Tag View. Tags weren't showing up for them. But I don't think it crashed Evernote.

AppleScript problem?

I, for a long time, have used the following AppleScript (via an Alfred shortcut) to append a comment to the end of an existing note. The script no longer works. Haven't tried to troubleshoot yet... will do that soon, but thought I would first post to see if there is an obvious change in the way the beta is handling AppleScript.

fyi, in the code below, the variable 'q' is passed in from Alfred and includes the text being appended

tell application "Evernote"
set query to "notebook:\"Reference\" " & "\"" & "2014 Accomplishments" & "\""
set matches to find notes query
set AccomplishmentsNote to item 1 of matches
set today to do shell script "date '+%Y%m%d'"
set now to "<strong>" & today & "</strong>"
set entryContent to q & "<br>"
tell AccomplishmentsNote to append html (now & ": " & entryContent & return & return)
end tell

thanks for any tips or guidance! -- jay

I'm enjoying the beta, and so far I really enjoy the speed.  One issue:

I use a Scansnap scanner.  Used to be that after I'd scan something, the newly created note would stay open in it's own window, so I could give it a title, assign a notebook, etc.  Now, it just goes to my default notebook, silently.  I have to go find it, then assign title, tags, notebook, etc.

Not a huge deal, but scanning to Evernote is something I do every day, so I'd like to be able to use the old workflow.

Thanks!

Today's build of Yosemite (seed 3) seems to have broken the toolbar in this version of Evernote. On initial launch the main Evernote window won't display, and it takes a bit of fiddling and clicking to get it to show up. Once it does show up, the toolbar is totally blank. This is logged in the console:

7/7/14 4:55:02.653 PM Evernote[5057]: Unable to load the Interface Builder file NSColorPickerCrayon.nib because the object archive is missing. Valid nib files must contain either keyedobjects.nib, objects.nib, or data.nib. I'm fully aware of the hazards of running on an unsupported OS, so I'll live with this. Just wanted to make sure you were aware.

@jay, please attempt to troubleshoot and let me know how it goes.

I'm receiving the AppleScript Error:  "Evernote got an error: Operation would exceed monthly upload allowance."

The AppleScript console shows this info for the last line in the script that is kicking that error:

append note id "x-coredata://5D5AB38F-0261-4604-A434-00110606F914/ENNote/p520" of notebook "Reference" html "<strong>20140708</strong>: testing<br>

FYI, My current Account status: Currently monthly usage 13.3 MB of 1 GB

I posted this on the private beta thread and not sure if I'm the only one experiencing it - it's actually hard to replicate... seems more bound to happen after a sleep+wake. checkboxes become "missing plugin" placeholders

Seems all of the URLs for linked notes have changed. None of my links to other EN notes (classic style) work any longer. This is really bad for me. Beta upgraders, beware

Not having this issue at all.  I tested links to notes going back to 2012 and all of them work.

Link to comment

jayelevy, we haven't experienced this. We'll verify. Thanks.

I realize this does not provide any insight for troubleshooting, but here's a simple example of one note. All of my links have changed.

Any thoughts on the other post regarding certain AppleScript no longer working?

Are these links for notes within the Evernote client?  I thought you meant URLs for shared notes.

Dan, yes. Sorry that wasn't clear. These are all notes linked using the the URL captured by right clicking on a note and selecting "Copy Classic Note Link". I frequently will link related notes using this method (i.e., copy URL using prior step and then pasting into another note by creating a link using Format>Link>Add... (or ⌘K ). I hope that clarifies the use case.

I have just done a test with some notes URLs.  I tested with a note I made in 2013.  I had made a link to that note in Sep 2013 (the old link below).  I made a new link today (new).  If I paste the link within the Evernote app I get exactly the same link.  So maybe this change goes back before late 2013?  If I paste a link for a note direct into the web browser then I get the second link under new.  I don't know how Evernote devs managed to get my clipboard to know when I paste something into the web browser or the Evernote app!

So maybe this change goes back before late 2013?

These are all notes linked more recently. It looks as if (from my naive perspective) EN re-indexed all of my notes when I installed the Beta. I'm sure I'm wrong, but that seems to be the symptom.

btw, I just setup your suggested Siri to Evernote workflow... AWESOME! Thanks for that tip.

Since upgrading to the 5.6 beta 1, I'm having no end of problems.   At this point, Evernote crashes as soon as I try to view any of the notes I created with 5.6.   In addition, the notes themselves seem to be growing with inserted blank lines -- thousand's of them.    The crash looks like below.   Even worse, when I try to downgrade to 5.5, I'm getting repeated sync errors and unable to complete a sync.   I've opened a trouble ticket on this, but very worrisome that this kind of instability is present.

If you revert to 5.5.2, I would recommend wiping all your Evernote data including your prefs file (in terminal: defaults delete com.evernote.evernote).

Please make sure to submit your crash reports via app.

In fact, I did exactly that, including going through Application Defaults and making sure nothing was left before downgrading.   It seems that the problem is not on the local machine, but rather 5.6 did something to the server database that is causing 5.5.2 to no longer be able to sync.   It is is hitting exceptions related to missing resource data:

Jack, any chance that this roll-out will address the issues described here ? long story short: having "copy classic note link" as a persistent menu option so we can apply a keyboard shortcut to it.

In fact, I'd go one step further:  revert to the previous behavior where the DEFAULT link is always the "classic link", and provide an option for "external link".    It seems that most people want the "classic" internal link.

Capture Selection from Screen option in context menu while editing note seems to not be working.

After making this choice, the Grab function is initiated, but after selecting a portion of the screen, releasing the mouse and control returned to the EN note, the image copied is not pasted. Instead, a square with a blue question mark is inserted into the note.

Popclip extensions associated with copy and paster don't always work in Evernote windows. For example, change small letters to first capital produces a blank.

Problem with the notes editor

If I insert "- " before a word and this word is the first one in the new line, the word after "- " jumps to a new line instead of "- " being pasted right in front of the word.

Installed yesterday, I was biting my fingernails, but the database upgrade went fine (except for apparently several hours of CPU intensive re-indexing of PDFs that ensued after the database was upgraded). Beta works fine so far.

One issue I noticed however is when typing into the search box. Sometimes the box starts to hide text I am typing (when I type in the search box, the text doesn't appear, box remains white as if it was preventing me from writing, but the list of notes below is activated when I type but nothing is displayed). It's odd a little bit.

After EN restart, search goes to normal. I'll continue to monitor it this is just random thing or happens regularly.

I noticed that there was a new Beta. Waited a couple weeks, but it still does not appear in "Check for Updates."

So I downloaded it from the link.

Open. Crash.

Opened again. Crash.

Delete the thing I downloaded, leave everything else in place - older version + all files associated therewith.

Now Evernote is re-downloading all my notes.

Why isn't it using the database already on my Mac? Where are all my shortcuts?

Remind me not to do this again. I love betas, but next time I'll wait until I can just click "Check for Updates."

If you wonder where are the 100GB gone on your drive after upgrading to EN Beta, check the folder:

/Users/~/Library/Application Support/com.evernote.Evernote/OLD

The old folder will contain the copy of the old database before it was migrated to new database.

If your EN runs fine and is in sync, it's probably safe to delete this. In my case it was 35GB which is the size of one of my EN databases (it's huge).

Where can I find and download the latest version of this beta? I'm still using the first one.

Where can I find and download the latest version of this beta? I'm still using the first one.

Thanks!

Yep, that's it. Thanks for letting me know.

Should betas appear when I open "Check for Updates"?

I could have sworn I'd downloaded betas that way before, but I am using 5.5.1 and it tells me I have the latest version -- even though I've checked "update to beta versions when available" under Preferences.

I'm a little confused here. My Data folder is there inside the Old folder but does not exist separately in the parent folder of com.evernote.Evernote. I'm therefore very hesitant to delete the Old folder.

Please could you clarify. Has the Data folder now been merged into, or renamed as, some other folder in the new beta?

I wouldn't delete the Old folder in your case - it seems to me that the upgrade process is not exactly smooth in this beta even if it is presented as being so to the user.

I'd suggest opening a support ticket as they may have a graceful solution although my guess is that instead they'll just get you to reinstall. Make sure you have any local notebooks backed up first.

I found two separate folders in /Users/~/LIbrary/Application support.

The one called /Users/~/Library/Application Support/com.evernote.Evernote/OLD contains the folder with the old database. This is the one I deleted.

There is another folder: /Users/~/Library/Application Support/Evernote/accounts/Evernote/~/content which contains the database being currently used. This is the one you DON'T want to delete.

Thanks Ursula, but all I found in  /Users/~/Library/Application Support/Evernote was a folder called 'quick-notes'.

I don't think I've seen a response to the question of whether you intend to fix the erroneous keystroke for "paste and match style". The Mac convention is Cmd-Opt-Shift-V.

In earlier versions of Evernote, you had it as Cmd-Shift-V. I reported the error and for a while it was fixed, but it's recently gone back to the wrong one.

Am I missing something here? Is there a reason you want to violate Mac standards? (I hope not: I have another program that uses Cmd-Shift-V for something else.)

@RobLewis It actually beggars belief how EN can allow this to happen.  In my opinion - a software company that clears a bug and then re-introduces it (beta or not) is a company who hasn't a handle on its code development.  I know little and could be classed as nothing about Software Dev but I do understand how agile it can be and also how you can have code check software to prevent this...?  It just makes me laugh for all the wrong reasons... It also goes back to one of my earlier comments, who tests for EN?  Us, the customer?

Yeah, I've scratched my head over how and why this could happen. The only thing I can come up with is that some developer at EN is seeking some kind of bogus "symmetry" with the Windows version, which perhaps uses Ctrl-Shift-V. Other than that, I guess it can only be (as you note) inept source code version control.

@Rob and @Phil, the paste shortcut will be fixed in our next public beta release.

Who tests for EN?  Us, the customer?

We have a full QA staff, tons of internal testing, private beta testers, and now an opt-in public beta. In this case, you have opted in :) Thanks for catching that!

This release represents a complete rewrite of our note editor. I'm actually glad the keyboard shortcut for paste is the issue causing the most ire :)

Complete rewrites can be notably fraught; see, e.g. http://vibratingmelon.com/2011/06/10/why-you-should-almost-never-rewrite-code-a-graphical-guide/, which references Joel Spolsky's classic entry on the topic (http://www.joelonsoftware.com/articles/fog0000000069.html) . If a shortcut key is the biggest problem, then that speaks well to this rewrite...

I may write a blog post about the importance of this release related to the new note editor, sync engine and overall stability improvements. If not, I'll surely post in the forum about it. To give an idea of scale, this was a larger engineering effort than the V5 redesign (by far).

For now, please keep the bug reports coming. This is incredibly helpful. Thank you all!

I think the shortcut key as being most notable is incorrect. The thread highlights many issues since beta release. Formatting for one inside of tables. How it's viewed in presentation mode. When you exit an annotation on Mac you loose cursor placement and have to come out to go back in. Tagging having an issue. It goes on. Where is the EN that we were told would be delivered by The CEO at the start of the year. Again.. I love EN but sometimes I just wonder..

Please do. I think it'd be an interesting read.

When editing tags for a new note, the immediate sync removes focus in the middle of typing.

This is incredibly frustrating. When I add a note, I immediately edit the tags of the note. As I'm typing the 2nd or 3rd letter of the tag, Evernote removes focus from the tag (during sync, I believe), and disrupts my typing.

It seems if I pop out the note from the Evernote, it allows me to edit the tag without disruption.

Windows version have top bar customization (so did Mac client previous to V5 I'm quite sure), do we plan to have that back? I miss it. Even though cmd+shift+a does the job, sometimes you just want that nice little button there to help....

also on image note resizing, would be nice to have some information on pixel size, I know it might sound a bit nerdy, but feels quite weird resizing a virtual thing w/o any tangible reference to size.

another thing with images, if I drag and drop a link-embeded image from browser to evernote, that dropped image will "inherit" the link, however besides having no visual clue you can't edit nor remove the "link" feature.

Merging woes.

I addressed the new behaviour with the first note in a set of merged notes now also get the big, bold header on bluish-grey background that previously only notes below the first one would get.

One thing is that it is redundant (and ugly), another thing is that it causes a problem if you, like me, continue to append notes on a merged note. The top notes header will be repeated ad nauseam, unless you delete it after each merge. Eksample: https://www.evernote.com/shard/s3/sh/a678e546-8892-4219-9acc-8eebfe416e0f/dc5d4dc658447c881e58ba6b49e10b22

So, the time I save on not having to manually sync merged notes I now use on deleting headers (which can be surprisingly cumbersome depending on what the content of the note is).

I am experiencing a strange behavior when I add tags within the desktop editor or in the (chrome) web clipper. When  I begin typing a tag in the tag field and hesitate mid-tag,  the process stops and a truncated tag name results instead of allowing me to finish or offering autocomplete alternatives.    This is very frustrating because these tag-fragments have to be deleted in the tag screen.

The tag screen is also behaving strangely.  When I select multiple tags to move then into another tag, they stay highlighted where they are on the screen for several seconds as they one-by-one are moved where designated. This process is very slow and awkward to watch.

You should verify that this behavior exists in the newest beta, if you haven't already.

Jack's pulled 5.6.2 while they look at a Tag bug so this is the latest and greatest (for a little bit anyway).

Wasn't sure where to put this, but crucially the handwritting recognition feature is broken in this version. It renders all my moleskin notebook notes useless so will need to downgrade. The bigger upgrade without a doubt is the search by relevance feature which I adore.

Please fix this in the next (Beta 3) beta:

In relation to the new Beta on this thread, what was welcomed with open arms based on the description was the auto sync, however it plays havoc if you are adding tags at the time in which it chooses to run that sync, which is supposedly in the background...? Anyone else?  If this has been addressed already, apologies, lots of threads in here with issue.

At the chance of repeating myself there is also an issue when you either annotate an image in a note with Skitch or even rotate the image, when the action (annotate or rotate) is complete you loose the ability to make any further changes, add text, delete text and so on.

You have to come out of the Note and go back in... Anyone??

With beta #2, I pasting lists no longer includes list markers

1. Create a note with a list

2. Copy the content of the note

3. Paste into a plain text text editor (i.e. Sublime Text)

Expected:

This is a list * A * B * C

Saw:

This is a listABC

I can't reproduce this behaviour.  Have tried annotating and rotating an image but I can straightaway edit the note text.  How are you viewing the note when you make these edits?  I use the preview shown in the main view.  Were you opening the note into a new window?  I made a few annotations/rotations of that Galileo portrait but was immediately able to edit the text in the note.

An error I have noticed a few times now is that sometimes I cannot use DELETE to delete new lines / returns (or whatever stye should be called!) but BACKSPACE works.  This does not happen all the time and I am not sure about any relevant aspects of the context when it has happened.

Hey Dan, great reply and observation.

All my testing is when I pop the note in a new window from Expanded Card View, Double Click the Note, opens new window.  Tried again this morning and I can reproduce the issue without fail.

I tried your way mentioned above, no issue for me it works as expected.

Expanded Card View works best for me and pre beta it worked as I would expect.

Is anybody else seeing strange behaviour with the search within EN, again at the risk of repeating something already said - apologies!

I put in a search, say "email" and don't hit enter, just email and it pops up a note with a tag of email with the rest in behind.  Why does it open this note??

Was the old way where you had to hit enter after the search entry?

Link to comment
Thanks.  Ideally I wanted to also test with the note in its own window.  I have now done that.  I did reproduce the bug.  However, that is not all …

In testing this bug I discovered:
  1. Not all images in a note are available in the "Annotate this note” menu.
Annotate%20this%20note%20menu.png?resizeThe only way to annotate other images is to right click it and select annotate from the contextual menu.
    Evernote%20contextual%20menu%20for%20an%
  2. If I annotate an image from the “Annotate this note” menu then I get the bug.  If I annotate an image from the contextual menu I do not get the bug.
  3. If I annotate an image and get the bug I can then annotate the image again and the bug disappears – I added some text and then removed it, i.e. I can edit text without closing the note.  This worked only on the first image in that menu (the picture of Paul Dirac) but not with the second image (Wolfgang Pauli).
  4. With the second image (Pauli) I selected it for annotation, added some text.  I then could not edit text in the note.  I then removed the annotation but still could not edit text.  I then rotated the image from the contextual menu, I could then edit text.
In another scenario I annotated from contextual menu – no problems.  Then I rotated the image from the contextual menu and the bug appeared – could not edit text.  Rotated it back – still could not edit.  Rotated it again and now I can edit text (still can even if I rotate it back).
This is a very strange bug!
  5. Every time I annotate one of these two notes I get a tonne of white space added into my note – it gets added onto existing white space.

I hope you could follow all that meandering!

Dan,

Point 1, agreed.  I have seen this too.

Point 2, interesting!

Point 3, even more interesting...!

Point 4, strange behaviour...

I noticed the white space when I email in a note with images etc.. I was looking for the content in the note and had to scroll over to the right where it was almost off screen hidden.. For some reason it inserted a Column x 2 and first was the large white space and the second had the body of the email in there... Strange.

Until recently text I highlighted on iOS (orange) would show up appropriately on OS X (yellow) and vice versa.  And if I had highlighted text on iOS I could clear it on OS X and vice versa.
Evernote%20Highlighting%20Issues.png?res
As you can see there is now a conflict with iOS highlight with OS X highlights.  I cannot clear the iOS highlight on OS X, the editor just replaces the iOS orange highlight with the OS X yellow highlight.  I can however clear the OS X highlight from iOS.  The iOS app also overrides the OS X highlights across the editor (I added them back in afterwards so you could see the colour distinction).

Loaded Beta 3 this a.m. Prior to this update (though I skipped Beta 2), I was able to drag an Apple mail message from Apple mail into an EN note and bring over the full email (.eml file). As of Beta 3, when I do this action, EN is only including a URL back to the original message. Assuming this was a product change, this is a significant step backward. No longer can I store a message I want to save with a note independent of Apple Mail. Please tell me this capability was not removed!!

Apparently evernote creates this temporary folder to store the data while moving database. This is not my default Evernote Database folder location. Thanks.
