evernote:// no longer available when linking to a note?

Hi,

Linking to EN notes is something I use all the time, and for me is one of the most valuable aspects of EN. I have Excel spreadsheets full of note links.

Before upgrading to EN5 I would right click on a note, select "Copy Note Link," and be able to paste a path starting with

evernote://view/

In EN5 the hyperlink path I get with Copy Note Link starts with

https://www.evernote.com/shard/s48/nl/

which requires me to be on the web at least to get the local display started.

I would expect the Toolbar command "Copy URL" to generate a path starting with https://, but to also have that be the default with "Copy Note Link" is a problem: When on an airplane last week I couldn't open any links I'd generated with EN5, only with EN4.

I also can't get Nozbe to correctly link to notes unless I have internet access. I've been working with their tech support for a couple of weeks now.

The cloud is awesome but it's problematic when companies assume I'm always connected, even when I'm literally in the clouds.

Any workaround to this?

Thanks,

Lena

Yep, there have been many complaints about this unadvertised change, many threads posted here.

To get the internal link, which Evernote calls "Classic", hold down the ALT key (or OPT key in Mac) when you right-click on the Note.  You will now see an option for "Copy Classic Note Link"

Thanks JMichael. I couldn't find prior threads... searching the forum for evernote:// got me too many hits and I didn't know to search "classic."

If I hold down ALT as I right click... which should be easy enough... the right-click menu flashes for far less than a second. I've tested this on a desktop and on laptop. I'm unable to see the option "copy classic note link."

Has the ALT stopped working to furnish the "classic" link? Running 5.4.0.3698 (271698) Public.

The way around it seems to be

Right click on note, Copy Note Link

EXTRA STEP 1 - Paste link into new Evernote note

EXTRA STEP 2 - Right click on link, choose Edit hyperlink. (Fortunately entire hyperlink is selected)

EXTRA STEP 3 - Copy evernote:/// link onto clipboard

Paste into Excel (Ctrl-K, etc.)

Ack. My life is SO much easier now.

Thanks,

lena

On windows it is Ctrl

The menu option doesn't also change to indicate that you are going to get it, but you should see the evernote:/// link.

Thanks for the correction, Scott.  Sorry for any confusion.

Thanks spg SCOTT for chiming in.

I had tried Control -- and Shift, and Ctrl+Shift -- and still the link I see in Excel starts with https://.

No keyboard shortcut is working for me together with the right click.

Thanks,

lena

OK, I have NOT personally verified this, but here is Evernote's explanation.  I guess you can't use the "right-click" approach.

In regards to notelinks, the Windows client is using new behavior and I'll clarify a bit more on it.

If you select "Copy Note Link" and paste back into Evernote, you should see no change in behavior. You should get the green note links with the note title as the anchor text

If you select "Copy Note Link" and paste anywhere else (such as into a browser address bar or notepad) you will see an https.... link. This link will behave better "out in the wild" outside of Evernote. Virtually every operating system knows how to deal with an https link (in case you don't have Evernote installed on that particular machine) and there is a way to add that note to your account or even request access to it if you don't have permission to view the note. Under the old system, users would run into various issues when pasting a note link outside of Evernote and we're trying to streamline that process.

In the Evernote for Windows client, if you select your note(s) and then hold down Ctrl then go up to the menu bar and select Notes >> Copy Note Links then you will always get old behavior.

I see you have your solution now. After today's outage, it is CRITICAL to use this. With my older evernote:// links, I was able to launch notes from within other apps no problem. With a few of the newer notes that have the standard HTTP:// prefix, it wouldn't work because Evernote's server was down so couldn't finish the click action.

Well, the workaround Dlu announced (thanks again, JMichael) works but is one of the silliest  procedures I've seen in my 30+ years of dealing with PC software.

I select the note I want to paste the link from, press Control, then have to forfeit the keyboard shortcut (Alt - N - L) that would have allowed me to activate menu bar --> Note >> Copy Note Link. (Pressing Ctrl before the Alt kills the capability to activate the menu bar using the keyboard). Meaning, I MUST mouse this thing.

With the right click I would have at least been able to use the "right menu" windows key.

Evernote techs, can you please consider a more practical way to generate the classic note link?

EdH's comment indicates why some of us feel it's important... if the apps we use outside of EN can read the evernote:// link we'd like to be able to continue to use that!

Thanks,

lena
