Web Clipper 6 for Firefox - beta

jbignert

Idea

Hi all,

We have a release candidate version for the new Firefox Web Clipper that we'd like to invite a few select people to start testing.

It is a complete re-write and doesn't share any code with the previous version so we expect some turbulence in the beginning.

When you report issues please post your OS, Firefox versions, URL where an issue can be observed and as much details as necessary for us to reproduce the problem.

Not expected to work in this version:

- Sharing

Get the latest build here:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/evernote-web-clipper/versions/

And feel free to post both design & performance feedback as well as straight up bugs.

Is there a direct link to the latest xpi? I can't download it, no matter what browser I use. It stucks on the spinning balls.

EDIT: Never mind, I finally got it working. I signed in again, revoked access to any Firefox Web Clipper extension and... voila, the new beta appeared. (For some strange reason.)

First of all, I'd like to commend the team at Evernote for putting the FF plugin back on the roadmap. With the introduction of the developer version of Firefox, the usual gray icon is no longer visible in the monochrome toolbar (screenshot).

Would it be possible to request a monochrome version of the icon as a configurable setting? I know it's a long stretch, but perhaps something to add given time (as a configurable option)?

Cheers!

Hi,

Thanks for your renewed efforts to build a web clipper that could run smoothly on Firefox.

I'm running into a bug with your latest beta version at this Quora page. The "+" and "-" size selector buttons are unresponsive when I clip this page (article mode). I've tested the same thing with Chrome's web clipper and there's no bug

I'm using Firefox latest version 33.1 on Mac OS X 10.7.5.

Best regards.

Hi all,

We pushed an update to the Beta version that we now consider release candidate. Please re-install it and give it a go and try to break it.

As always we appreciate detailed reports of issues with info like:

- FF version, OS version

- Page where the issue was observed

- Detailed steps on how to reproduce it

Unless I'm missing something, how can it be considered release candidate when it's little more than clearly. still missing, pretty much all the functionality of Chrome. As you wrote yourself.

Not expected to work in this version:

- Post clip dialog

- Native clipping component

- Sharing

- Selection clipping not implemented

- Smart filing

- Keyboard shortcuts

- Related notes on Google & other search engines

When can we expect the same functionality as the one in Chrome?

Only jbignert could say for sure, but at a guess, "general release" for Firefox would be a functional release that can be used by the general public.

Although I'm sure that they're aiming to put as many features into the Firefox clipper as are in the Chrome clipper, they're currently trying to get out a version that people can use at all on Firefox. There's no "contract" for them to provide parity with Chrome on first release; indeed, he's pointed out the items that will be missing for that release, but presumably will be added over time.

Hi krunoslav,

I haven't properly updated the text in the original post that links to the beta version and that mentions what's not implemented yet. My bad.

Going over your list everything on the list is implemented except sharing which will come in the next release version.

You do need to uninstall older beta versions and re-install the never ones manually to get the updates.

I iust installed FF web clipper 6.0 beta.2. It works fine once or twice and then becomes nonfunctional. If I quit FF and restart the clipper then works again - once or twice and then stops again. This is incredibly annoying and time consuming! When it stops working the clipper box opens up but even though it shows "clip article" the web page i am on does not show the article selected.

Should I go back to a 5.9 version?

I just installed it today, on Windows 7, Firefox 33.0 - and, barring memory consumption, I have no problem with it. I expect memory consumption to go down after the official release. I've used it a few times, and it's still functional.

Which operating system and version of FF are you using?

For me, this is the worst beta yet.  Saving an article works 1, at most 2x, before clicking "Save" does nothing at all.  I have to then restart Firefox for it to save a clipping.  Rinse and repeat.

I've deleted the plugin and reinstalled.

Me again... just tried the extension of Firefox 37 (Nightly) on Ubuntu - same problem - "No internet connection". This was from my connection at home. The Win7 attempt above was through a proxy at work. I am in Thailand if that is at all relevant :)

Version 6 from the addons.mozilla.org managed to slow down my Firefox 33.1.1 on Windows 8.1 significantly. Loading pages, closing tabs and everything else lagged considerably and the Firefox process grew above 1 GiB, while with the Web Clipper 5.9.1 it sits around 600 MiB and there is no noticeable lag even after several days of usage.

I can confirm this as well. The addon makes the whole Firefox interface very slow and loading pages is slow as well. Only in Web Cliper 6 beta, not the earlier versions. I have to use Cliper instead now. Web cliper as is can't be used, make everything in Firefox so slow. please fix that.

Hi all,

We have verified the memory usage problems and are working on a fix for them.

If you have this problem it would be great if you can post more details about your typical workflow and that will help us narrow down the components that are offending.

- What type of clip are you making? (article, simplified article, screenshot, etc)

- What notebook selection preference do you have? (smart filing, last used notebook, specific notebook)

Thx

For me, regarding memory issues, it doesn't matter how I use it.  I think the moment it is installed, Firefox UI responsiveness goes down. Once its uninstalled it works fine again.

Same for me as Krunoslav said.  I haven't used the clipper at all lately, but Firefox has been freezing and crashing like crazy lately, and extremely slow. I uninstalled the clipper and it seems to be back to normal.  I'm on FF 33.1.  I also use 64-bit Firefox Nightly build, which I think is on version 37, and had the same issue - though Nightly has implemented multi-process architecture, so I was getting individual tab crashes right and left instead of the whole browser, which have stopped after uninstalling the clipper.

Hi folks,

If you have a few minutes to help us diagnose the memory 'leak' please do following:

- after using webclipper for a while,

- navigate to "about:memory"in a new tab in Firefox,

- click the first measure button (top left box)

- copy-paste the tree that it shows (just select all, cmd-c) and paste it into an Evernote note and send to me as a PM via the forum.

Thx, all help appreciated.

Thought the "No internet connection" thing could possibly be an interaction/conflict with another extension, so tried installing on a clean profile both on Win7/Firefox 37/64 bit and Ubuntu/Firefox 37/32 bit, but got exactly the same results :(

We've updated the beta build with a newer version with attempts at patching up the memory leak. If you have had memory problems please take a few minutes to uninstall older beta versions and install this one and let me know if it improves anything for you.

I can't vouch for whether or not the memory issue is better or worse, but this Beta does seem to have more problems for me. Upon installing it (Firefox 37/Ubuntu/32-bit), Firefox crashed after locking up for about 30 seconds (this lock up was present on the previous version, but not as bad). When I restarted Firefox, it again locked up for about 30 seconds, then everything seemed OK. The "No internet connection" issue is still present though, making it impossible to test further since I can't log in

Link to comment

Still a lot of memory usage. I'm on Firefox 34, and when I'm using it with no web clipper, with 50 tabs open its 600 MB of memory or so. As soon as I install web caliper it goes to 1600 MB and stays there, plus everything is slow, the UI I mean. I uninstall web cliper and it's back to normal.Clearly there is some kind of issue.

Erico,

I go back and forth.  In fact, I'm posting this from Chrome (a Chromebook, actually).  Chrome does do well for some things, but then I go back to Firefox for certain extensions.  Firefox also seems to be better for privacy reasons.

No need to apologize for your opinion :-)

The thing is, we use the best option we can, and some of us think it's Firefox. Some may not be able to use any other browser due to computer permissions or other reasons, and have to use Firefox.

Either way, it doesn't matter. Firefox may not be the most popular browser out there, but it is very popular. And I believe this is why Evernote supports it.

Anyhow - enjoy Chrome/Chromium :-)

I did for a while, then switched back to Firefox.

I used so much firefox. The problem is that when opening many tabs, the browser closed suddenly. :/ But, i love firefox browser.

Beyond personal preference, Firefox offers special addons that I can't find alternatives for in Chrome There are other reasons as well. Besides. Firefox is the only browser that has full color management support, if Chrome ever gets it let me know. In the meantime I will use Firefox. I have wide gamut monitor and it's unusable without color managed applications.

So, I managed to get around the "No internet connection" issue by booting my profile in the release version of Firefox, signing into the evernote extensions there, then going back to Firefox 37 with the same profile. Looks like there is some issue in the latest Firefox version with the code that checks for an internet connection. This is the only extension I'm having any issues with in Firefox 37

At least I can start testing the extension now - looks good so far! :)

Firefox 34.0.5, Win 7.1, new Evernote and WebClipper user

The WebClipper installation instructions could be improved for Win users since you completely miss the step to download the xpi file.  Since the installer has already disabled any older version of WebClipper, opening a new FF tab seems pointless.  Instead, why not install the add-on directly from the add-on menu (gear icon)?

After two FF restarts, the add-on seemed to work well.

Link to comment

Tried that. Even completely removed web clippper and restarted Firefox. Then installed add-on from file and it still will not clip PDFs. But found workaround. I use Foxit Reader as my PDF Reader and its pluging for Firefox 34.0.5, so I chose  to customize toolbar in web interface and added native pluging's Evernote sharing option. While it's does not give me any sharing option, it at least let me put pdf in Evernote directly (it goes into default notebook). I wonder if it's has to do with the type of Reader I am using.

Same here, completely unusavle under MacOSX Yosemite...

We generally do not give out dates but I can assure you this is one of our priorities.

So far the longest beta I've ever tested.... Maybe 2015 will bring us the latest evernote webclipper. Hopefully

Running Fx 34.0.5  under 10.10.2 and last Beta (dec 10) I've two issues
1) can't take screenshot clips (is this still under dev?) even though I can select the area, after mouse release the shot does not show up to edition and upon saving I get "Error: invalid arguments"
2) not sure if it's only w me but the Evernote Google results (how do you call that feature again?) now has a white background vs a black in the past. I preferred the black much more, not sure if this is a new design or just a bug

My setup is very minimalist - I have no toolbars, sidebars, or menus visible, and I use the keyboard extensively. I have vimperator [link] installed, and I rarely use the mouse. I have a vimperator command mapped to activate the EN web clipper from the Tools menu.

I just tried installing the beta/alpha (package name and references in this thread don't really match), and I noticed that it does not have an item in the Tools menu. This means that I cannot use the clipper with my current setup, and I will have to add a toolbar just for the EN button.

Will the final release restore the menu item in the Tools menu?

I just noticed that the Tools --> Add to Evernote menu item is back on the Dec-10 version.

Thank you! :-)

I tried removing all extension and keep only Evernote web clipper - didn't helped. Then I tried creating new Firefox profile and under this, Evernote addon started working. Then I switched back to my default profile and in process lost all my opened tabs (not intentionally). But after this, Evernote web clipper started working under my old profile with all extensions enabled… So… Could the big amount of opened tabs (cca 100) in many groups be the problem? It was only difference I noticed.

Sorry if this sounds stupid, but can someone please explain step 3: Open finder window with location of xpi file and drag and drop this onto any open Firefox window.

This installs it.

What is a "finder window"?

Hi all,

Version 6.0 was submitted in mid November and has since then been in review at Mozilla. Needless to say they are not very fast in this process and I have no clue on how much further it may take.

You can install the 6.0 version from here: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/evernote-web-clipper/versions/ however if Mozilla decides to not approve it, it may be disabled until until approved.

Link to comment

Several people here in the forum already confirmed that that 6.0 build has some serious issues which increases the memory usage and turns Firefox into a slow CPU hog after a few hours of usage. I doubt that it will pass the review.

It's true. The FF is famous catch or off suddenly when opening many tabs, especially with that add-on (web clipper), that lets slow. I think Chrome is the future of the browsers.

They don't even care. We (Firefox users) are waiting for so long for a proper extension and we keep getting buggy 'betas'. After 1.5 months with the last horribly buggy extension they gave us a new completely broken one. Pretty sure they didn't even test it.

You show no respect to your customers. That's pure trolling, not something you should expect from professionals.

Hi.  Different clippers in different browsers have different capabilities,  based on how easy it is to achieve certain operations in the mini operating system that runs the browser's add-ins.  Chrome is a complete OS in itself,  so has the most functionality.

Hi.  Any differences will be down to the different browsers and clipper functions.  Chrome being -I believe- a mini operating system,  it's possible to do more within it for instance than with the relatively locked-down Firefox.

If you prefer one to the other,  you could report differences back as a feature request to see whether Evernote can add better functionality to one or the other.  If you're solely concerned about the appearance of your clips - just stick to one browser if you can.

I'm using the latest web clipper and am having the same problem is the person quoted; CPU usage on OSX (very latest Mavericks) goes through the roof. I've disabled the clipper and Firefox works great again. Evernote and webclipper have been part of my workflow for many years and I hope there is a fix soon. Is anyone else still having this problem with multiple tabs open?

Latest 38 and latest web clipper from their extension site.

FYI, I also tested the extension on 2 different i7/8gb/SSD machines (from work), both with 100+ tabs open and splitted into FF groups (thus not loaded all at once, maximum 10 tabs per group), and the behavior is pretty similar to my previous report, with too much CPU usage and an unresponsive FF, sometimes with the evernote icon not even appearing in the upper bar.

A few of my colleagues tried to install the new extension on their FF, but none succeeded, with problems similar to mine or similar to other reports in this thread.

I'm afraid the extension may not pass the FF plugin validation step with those problems still there :-/

Thanks for the reminder. That has happened to me before and this time, like last time, the sign in area within the toolbar was greyed out and unavailable to sign in. I was able to sign in the right Evernote sidebar in google search results.

FYI, the user reviews of this extension (6.0.15) on the firefox add-on page lists many users with a similar problem, for example :

"Well, I have to say that the functionality that it provides is pretty nice and certainly helps with gathering information versus manually doing it. However, the way the add-on was implemented drags my browser into the performance realm of a snail and I have a 4th gen Core-I7 with 32GB of ram.

Hopefully they can address this issue, but until then I have to leave this add-on disabled."

----------------------

"Restoring my session without this addon installed takes 20-40 seconds (I have way too many tabs). With it installed it take 3-6 MINUTES? wtf?"

---------------------

"The worst part of this add-on, and the reason why I removed it, is that if you have a lot of tabs, it will bring Firefox to grinding halt due to ridiculously large memory and CPU usage, even after a restart, when Firefox doesn't actually load the tabs until they are selected by the user.

Functionally, the interface is based on a pop-up window that is shown when the Evernote button is clicked, but disappears whenever you click outside of it. What's the point of highlighting the content that is being clipped, if you can't scroll and see the extent of the highlighting, when the content is long?"

----------------

And this is just taken from the first page !!! So if I had to guess, i'm not the only user with this problem ... And if you had a userVoice or some platform to tracks bugs & feature requests (just a suggestion), I'd guess this bug would show up on the top of this list.

My main issue ATM is the one discussed in all previous posts : CPU usage climbing to 100% when opening my browser with extension enabled OR enabling the extension when browser already loaded, making my whole computer completely unresponsive until I kill my browser and restart it in safe mode to disable the extension.

So, considering I cannot use the extension, I can't really list any other "basic use case issue" at the moment.

I'm a heavy evernote web clipper user, and for this reason only I keep a chrome tab open at all times, and I have to switch to it everytime I need to clip something from the web : it's either that or using a really limited and deprecated v5 extension on firefox.

As you can see, the situation is not ideal.

My configuration may differ from nominal case only for the reason already stated multiple times above by Drag0nR3b0rn, Ismmchug & myself : I have a lot of tabs open in tab groups, but not much tabs open at any given time as I split them in a lot of groups to prevent heavy memory & CPU usage (FF option "do not load tabs until selected" enabled).

I'm available for any further investigation if needed.

Link to comment

It's been more than 2 weeks without any news, is this issue still under investigation ? Can we expect something at some point ? Is the code open source so that we can fix it ourselves if evernote is not willing to take care of this ?

Again, I'm a web developer and can investigate or send you specific logs / profillings etc if needed.

As much as I can see (using about:memory) the problem is that the web clipper creates three windows, event targets & event listeners per tab (whatever the tab is loaded or not), and causing a lot of heap allocations [that do seem like a mem leak of sorts] along the way.

The CPU usage climbs peaks to 100% in three cases - on initial launch, on oppening a new tab and when another mem allocation occurs and firefox pages out (which happens quite a lot - as I see a mem usage increase of about ~6GB after enabling the web clipper).

Edit: Here is a Firefox memory report, after enabling the web clipper and minimizing memory.

Thx for the feedback lsmmchug,

We are looking into the reports about excessive CPU usage. We did many fixes to mitigate that already but we'll look into if we missed something with the setting 'Load tabs once they are viewed'.

I am experiencing the same behaviour as noted by matgardon above.

I recently switched from the old clipper to the new. Once I installed, Firefox experienced a massive increase in the amount of RAM and CPU it uses; even with 35% of my cpu and over 2 gigabytes of memory, firefox is unresponsive.

It is clear that the new Evernote clipper is responsible for this behaviour.

I have a couple of hundred tabs "open" in Firefox, but I have the browser set to only load tabs once they are viewed. I can only imagine that Evernote is trying to load information about all of the unloaded tabs...

I am very happy with the design of the new clipper otherwise and I do hope that this issue can be addressed. I also tried to use Clearly, but the ability to use tags is essential.

Many thanks for all of your hard work.

Hello, Using firefox 36.0.4 on windows 7, i just installed the latest beta clipper 6.0.15, I am unable to see the icon for the menu bar.

If I go to customize, restore defaults, i see evernote web clipper in text, but the icon art is missing. If I try to drag this to the menu bar, it dissapears completely.  This done not happen with the standard install. Do you have any ideas of what i can do to get this back?

HI everyone, i solved my problem. this has to do with your History settings.

If you choose not to remember history, the icon does away.

Also, if you choose to run in private browsing mode, it is also not avaiable.

so, i now use a custom history setting.  i hope someone can use this info.

What versions of OS, FF, and EN clipper are you running?

I'm having trouble getting the clipper to work for me in Firefox. I'm running the latest version of firefox. I have reinstalled both firefox and clipper and I am running the latest version of Evernote. Anyone else having issues?

Hi I just installed the Firefox Web Clipper 6 beta from Jan 27. The icon is not showing up so that I can put it in my tool bar.  I did the view> toolbar>customize. It seems to be a ghost. Only words without icon and will not attach when I dragg it to the toolbar.

Unsavy computer user. Thank you

I just installed the latest beta (27-jan) and I get tan error message when trying to clip the following article:

http://www.runnersworld.com/race-training/race-more-to-become-a-better-runner?adbid=560165398608244736&adbpl=tw&adbpr=14882900&cid=socTP_20150127_39468537

The message says "Error: Owner document doesn't match."

Regards

I had no problems clipping it. Looks like it's a problem on your end.

Try clipping it from another computer.

So I just intalled the beta toda (2/19) and had an issue when clipping from gmail. I clipped a message with two attachments: a PDF and a Word document. The PDF opened fine from Evernote, but the Word document is completely garbled. Any thoughts?

Thanks
