bcalmac 21 Posted April 10, 2014 Share Posted April 10, 2014 The "Copy Note Link" function used to create URLs like: evernote:///view/1584467/s14/39dd7103-395c-44e6-bba5-1e78284983b9/39dd7103-395c-44e6-bba5-1e78284983b9/ As a result, clicking on a link in the Mac app would open the note in the Mac app. However, in the latest version (5.5.1), "Copy Note Link" creates http URLs like: https://www.evernote.com/shard/s14/nl/1584467/cadb1003-c33b-4b06-9ed5-609aa9ce406b/ and now clicking on the link in the Mac app briefly opens the browser and then opens the note in a new Evernote window. That's a major step back in terms of UX. With the current version, how can we navigate through note links and stay in the Mac app (as it was the case before with evernote:// URLs)? Either:It should be possible to generate internal evernote:// URLs orThe Mac app should be smart enough to translate https:// note URLs into internal links Link to comment

As has been discussed elsewhere in this forum, many of us use evernote links in apps like workflowy, omnioutliner, ithoughts etc so that clicking on a link on an iphone or a mac brings up evernote rather than a browser on ios or osx. While outside, the links are https://, so they should take you to the browser. Do you mean that the browser automatically redirects you to the Evernote app and you have no control over that? In a large piece of writing you use a lot of citations and references. It is essential you can trace back to them quickly as you will never remember where they all are. Here's what that change meant to me... Before the Copy Note Link behaviour changed... 1: Right click > Copy Note Link in Evernote (No need to even open the note.2: Right click > Paste in Scrivener (Or any other editor for that matter). After they changed it (but before I learned about the Option Key)... 1: Set up a new (dummy) not so I could do the following...2: Right click > Link… > Edit… on the link in the dummy note.3: Copy the: :evernote:///view/(long internal Evernote note location string/ from the edit link dialog box4: Go to Scrivener and select some text that I want to be the link5: Go to Edit > Link… > Type or paste… in Scrivener, paste in the native evernote link string I copied and check the “no prefix” option in the Scrivener dialog The native client is more capable. If I want to do some additional note taking or in-document annotation (allowing me to jump into Skim if I want to annotate a PDF for example - from which I can export referenced notes back into Scrivener under the same reference link). This change (and the message about the Option Key alternative not getting through) was very disruptive, cost me a lot of time, and led to me hanging up on Evernote for writing (which is what I do) and using Scrivener's more difficult internal research support. I am sure you all at EN would have known some customers (I am a long time premium account holder) would be utilising this kind of workflow and made a better effort to let us know about the change. Anyway, I am back to using EN the way I wanted to. Link to comment

There are times and places every week when I am not, due to either not having a signal, or security restrictions. It would be good of Evernote to provide an easily-implemented fix. Link to comment

I understand that the current system with sharing and internal links might be somewhat confusing for Evernote rookies, however, it is a very powerful tool to reference locally to Evernote notes. I use it all the time, inside evernote ("wiki style") as well as outside of evernote. Two examples: (1) I use Things as task/todo management solution and often use evernote:// links to refer to details for specific tasks.(2) When I write a book/document, I use evernote for research purposes and often use the evernote links even inside Markdown documents, because in the text editor (e.g. BBEdit) the "Open URL" command opens the very Evernote note locally. I to use weblinks for local purposes. Moreover these weblinks do not work offline. Evernote links do. So please: I think this is one of the most potent power-user features. Do not damage it! Also, not even the current "pasting in Evernote creates evernote:// links" is working consistently. E.g.: copy a note link, then move to a different note, select text press cmd-k and past the link... web-link instead of evernote link. Absolutely not what you want! Well, I think it is quite a good feature. The "https://" link will open a note in the default browser from any application even if no Evernote client is installed. Because it's a year later and the Mac client still is trying to open a web browser when the note links are clicked. I spent some time making note links in the Windows Evernote client, and after my Mac client synced, those note links all try to open in my browser instead of in Evernote. Link to comment
