evernote:// internal links gone?

Recommended Posts

The "Copy Note Link" function used to create URLs like:

evernote:///view/1584467/s14/39dd7103-395c-44e6-bba5-1e78284983b9/39dd7103-395c-44e6-bba5-1e78284983b9/

As a result, clicking on a link in the Mac app would open the note in the Mac app.

However, in the latest version (5.5.1), "Copy Note Link" creates http URLs like:

and now clicking on the link in the Mac app briefly opens the browser and then opens the note in a new Evernote window. That's a major step back in terms of UX. With the current version, how can we navigate through note links and stay in the Mac app (as it was the case before with evernote:// URLs)? Either:

  • It should be possible to generate internal evernote:// URLs or
  • The Mac app should be smart enough to translate https:// note URLs into internal links

Note links pasted into the Evernote client should be of the evernote:// variety.

Note links pasted outside the Evernote client should be the https:// type.

The exception to this is links created via CMD-K which are currently (incorrectly) creating https:// links. This is a bug, which we hope to fix in the next release.

As you’ve pointed out, Classic note links are the workaround.

Well, that answers my final question about this.  For me, a version in which this bug has been combed out would be most becoming.

Follow-up Q:  What is the recommended procedure to replace all the in-Evernote created-by-⌘k "https//" links with "evernote://" links?

Thats a shame. As has been discussed elsewhere in this forum, many of us use evernote links in apps like workflowy, omnioutliner, ithoughts etc so that clicking on a link on an iphone or a mac brings up evernote rather than a browser on ios or osx.

Why is it a shame? While in Evernote, links are evernote:// and they open internally. While outside, the links are https://, so they should take you to the browser. Do you mean that the browser automatically redirects you to the Evernote app and you have no control over that?

I use EN to collect and manage reference material for large writing tasks - for which I use Scrivener. In a large piece of writing you use a lot of citations and references. It is essential you can trace back to them quickly as you will never remember where they all are. Here's what that change meant to me...

Before the Copy Note Link behaviour changed...

1: Right click > Copy Note Link in Evernote (No need to even open the note.

2: Right click > Paste in Scrivener (Or any other editor for that matter).

After they changed it (but before I learned about the Option Key)...

1: Set up a new (dummy) not so I could do the following...

2: Right click > Link… > Edit… on the link in the dummy note.

3: Copy the: :evernote:///view/(long internal Evernote note location string/ from the edit link dialog box

4: Go to Scrivener and select some text that I want to be the link

5: Go to Edit > Link… > Type or paste… in Scrivener, paste in the native evernote link string I copied and check the “no prefix” option in the Scrivener dialog

The native client is more capable. If I want to do some additional note taking or in-document annotation (allowing me to jump into Skim if I want to annotate a PDF for example - from which I can export referenced notes back into Scrivener under the same reference link).

This change (and the message about the Option Key alternative not getting through) was very disruptive, cost me a lot of time, and led to me hanging up on Evernote for writing (which is what I do) and using Scrivener's more difficult internal research support.

I am sure you all at EN would have known some customers (I am a long time premium account holder) would be utilising this kind of workflow and made a better effort to let us know about the change.

Anyway, I am back to using EN the way I wanted to.

Thanks a lot for the option key : you save my day, and much more...

I'm deeply depending on links to the Evernote app and realized that all the recent links I pasted elsewhere are wrong (https) ; now I have to do track and replace them, but at least there's a solution

You shouldn't necessarily have to replace them, they'll just quickly open a browser window with the note before redirecting to the note in your desktop client. A little clunky, yes, but maybe not worth the time to replace all of them??

As long as your machine is on-line.  There are times and places every week when I am not, due to either not having a signal, or security restrictions.

It would be good of Evernote to provide an easily-implemented fix.

PLEASE, PLEASE do not remove the evernote:// style note links!!

I understand that the current system with sharing and internal links might be somewhat confusing for Evernote rookies, however, it is a very powerful tool to reference locally to Evernote notes. I use it all the time, inside evernote ("wiki style") as well as outside of evernote. Two examples:

(1) I use Things as task/todo management solution and often use evernote:// links to refer to details for specific tasks.

(2) When I write a book/document, I use evernote for research purposes and often use the evernote links even inside Markdown documents, because in the text editor (e.g. BBEdit) the "Open URL" command opens the very Evernote note locally.

I to use weblinks for local purposes. Moreover these weblinks do not work offline. Evernote links do.

So please: I think this is one of the most potent power-user features. Do not damage it!

Also, not even the current "pasting in Evernote creates evernote:// links" is working consistently. E.g.: copy a note link, then move to a different note, select text press cmd-k and past the link... web-link instead of evernote link. Absolutely not what you want!

Kind regards,

Alexander Schatten

Not seeing anything in the release notes that pertains to this problem. Is this one of the "500 bugs" squashed in this release?

Yes. The release notes mainly feature features or enhancements. This one falls into the bug fix bucket.

Solution: In the context menu for a note hold down Option. "Copy Note Link" becomes "Copy Classic Note Link" which creates the evernote:// URL.

Thank God I found this – thank you! Saves me a lot of time, as I want to paste note links into iCal and my web based task manager tool Asana.

We just had a major update to the Mac client, but 5.5.2 still has the bug that a copy and paste of a link, entirely within the Evernote client is still defaulting to https:// instead of evernote:// - it took a while to find the 'classic' work around.

Was this question answered somewhere and I missed it? I've now realized that a whole bunch of links I've created in Evernote in the past couple of weeks aren't working the way I'd like them to. It'd be nice to find an easy way to just replace the links, rather than redo each one.

(And the https links for me are opening the web browser, and staying there - there's no redirect to my browser.)

As far as I know there is no automated method for changing these links. You'll have to make the changes yourself.

Not sure why your browser isn't redirecting....

I'm using 5.7.2. Links opened via CMD-K show up as evernote:// but copying it to clipboard results to https://www.evernote.com

Is there any chance this bug's being solved before 6.0?

It's no bug it's a feature! The "https://" version only is created when you paste into another app and not Evernote. If you want to create the "evernote://" version for other apps as well, press the "Alt" button together with the right mouse button and select the menu that says something like "Copy traditional note link". A keyboard shortcut does not work in this case.

Well, I think it is quite a good feature. The "https://" link will open a note in the default browser from any application even if no Evernote client is installed. The "evernote://" link needs an Evernote installation.

Hello. Is this resolved yet? Because it's a year later and the Mac client still is trying to open a web browser when the note links are clicked.

I spent some time making note links in the Windows Evernote client, and after my Mac client synced, those note links all try to open in my browser instead of in Evernote.

Please send me a public link to your notes or send me an ENEX. Notes links pasted inside of Evernote should not open in a browser.

Before I do that, Dagfinn seems to think the bug has returned.

I'm particular about who sees my notes, so methinks a look into the software first is in order.
