If I upgrade to Premium, will you stop bugging me?

Can you be specific about where you are seeing this "ads" and announcements?

 

For example:

The iOS app has the "Marketplace" and "announcements" sections, but those can be moved/disabled (well.. minimized into a tiny icon in the bottom corner of the home screen) for all users in the App's settings. This more or less disables these elements. 

 

I suspect the "tooltips" you are referring to are the little modal popovers that say "Presentation mode - premium users can..blah blah"? Those appear only once ever, for both premium and free users. If you re-install the application, of course you'll see the tooltip again, but only once. Once they are dismissed, they should never appear again (except for re-installation or perhaps log-out/log-in sequences).

 

What advertisements are you referring to in iOS? Can you be specific about what exactly it is you are seeing? Perhaps post screenshots if possible.

Thanks, you nailed it. I'm talking about the "Presentation mode - Premium...". I assume there will be more harassment until I purchase Premium. But it sounds like that might be the only tooltip for now, which makes me feel better.

 

The Windows client has the ad down to the bottom-left, I understand I have to pay for Premium to make that go away.

 

I don't want to see the announcements, marketplace, or make Evernote your own on any of my devices if possible, but it seems that each of these can be selectively removed on some but not all devices.

 

It would be nice if there was a blend between Apple Notes (simple, clean, but very limited) and Evernote (robust, but close to being Adware).

The presentation mode popover will only occur once, whether you are premium or notCalling this harassment is a bit of a stretch. 

 

Yes, desktop ads are unavoidable in the free version, this seems very reasonable for a free product, especially since the ads are very non-intrusive.

 

You were referring specifically to iOS in your original post, and in iOS you can (more or less) remove Announcements and Marketplace. I do not know what you mean by "some but not all devices", it works on all my iOS devices... 

 

As for being adware, that is a bit of a stretch. Is gmail adware for displaying ads in your free email inbox? Or for displaying ads in your Google Maps app on iOS or Android? Is the Weather Network iOS application adware for displaying a banner ad at the bottom? I think in all of these cases, the general consensus would be that they are ad-supported free products/services and not adware. Is Evernote any different for displaying ads on the desktop application for their free tier users? Their mobile applications do not utilize third-party advertisements at all and their own marketing (Announcements and Marketplace) can be largely removed. To me this sounds even less like adware than gmail, google maps, or Weather Network, where third-party advertisements are completely unavoidable.

I'm really not sure I see a difference between "ad supported" and "adware". I don't think that "adware" need necessarily be pejorative. "Paying" for things by agreeing to see ads is something we've all been doing for years. Broadcast television is a good example. Lots of people seem to think it's quite reasonable to expect good software without having to pay anything ever. I think it's pretty unreasonable.

A hobbiest developer who does an occasional small app as a labor of love may be able to do it for free. Most of them, though, don't provide huge amounts of cloud storage space.

I don't like ads in my software. I make it a practice to encourage the developers of all ad supported software I use to offer a paid option.

Any interruption, such unwanted tooltips, popups, etc., that disrupts the normal flow of using the app is harassment to me, especially if that disturbance's purpose is to advertise. Personally, I'm just not a fan of ads in apps - it's a big turn off. I believe there are lots of other options to monetize a fine product, which I believe Evernote is.

 

I guess my purpose of my original post was to convey that I don't care much for the interruptions and I'd be willing to pay to get rid of them.

Agreed. I've complained a lot about popups (tooltips, popovers, dropdowns, etc.), but they keep increasing. I guess we will have to live with it.

I'm not against these infomercials or ads at all, but I want to be able to turn them off. It is infuriating to have them pop up in the middle of a time-sensitive task. Even worse, there is a popup with shared notes now -- I am spamming others when I share notes! I hope they'll change their policies. At the very least, I'd like to have control over my experience. Until then, i think we just have to learn to live with it. We're not going to see eye-to-eye on everything.

I agree with the complaints here. We all use lots of 'freemium' apps but some cross the line - It's like the difference between porn and art - you know it when you see it. To me, Evernote crosses the line to something that interrupts the aesthetic experience of the product in an annoying way. The reality is, if the premium product is something you really need, then you'll buy it. It should be that the value that drives the upgrade. This isn't an add-supported free product. The only advertising you are presenting is for the upgrade. 

 

If your model is - we will let you use the free product but make it annoying to you until you upgrade, then you get this experience people are sharing here. If it is really a valuable upgrade, I should be happy to pay for it. For me, it's been one of the main reasons I've abandoned Evernote in the past.

I am a premium user with a pretty high intolerance of ads - I am not bothered by ads

 

I don't see pop-up ads or distractions during my day -- been premium for more than 2 years

 

Having said that I have some serious concerns on where Evernote is going with "workspace" but that is off your question

I am a premium user - now , it would seem, that I am going to be subjected to advertising from organisations such as "Wall Street Journal" whose advertisement turned up in my "notes" inbox?

 

Why do I have to be bombarded with annoying "Junk Mail" every way I turn.... Is this what I am paying for?

You shouldn't be seeing actual notes created by Evernote, other than those you have instructed it, or a third party to create (e.g., forwarding mail to Evernote, or using IFTTT to create notes based on some other, external action). 

 

I suspect you are seeing related content suggestions generated by "Context", a premium feature that was recently released that, at the end of a given note, suggests external material that might be related or helpful (For example, it brings up LinkedIn information for names mentioned in notes). I don't find this an immensely helpful feature for the work I do, but some people seem to dig it. You can turn it off, it is optional

Are you seeing ACTUAL NOTES from the Wall Street Journal? If so, then this might be a different problem.

It is a new feature... (which I disabled)...

 

Somehow the Wall Street Journal seemed to think that because I was planning a trip i needed their help to buy clothes ?? (or maybe Evernote linked Paris to Clothes ?)...

 

Clearly this feature will be abused by advertisers

Can you explain what you mean when you say that this feature will be abused by advertisers? 

I don't really see "abuse" by "advertisers" to be a likely scenario for several reasons:

1) No third-parties get your data. Evernote does the indexing (which they have always done to offer search and "related notes"), and fetches the content from providers (rather than giving your data to content providers to parse).

2) The list of content providers is curated by Evernote and users can choose which providers they want to see content from based on what is relevant to them (or it can simply be turned off).

3) It isn't advertising, per se, because it is actual content being offered up (rather than just a promise of content)*, and Evernote doesn't get paid per click, as far as I understand based on what I've read. That is, Evernote doesn't make money off you actually viewing the content. 

 

*while not a formal definition, as I see it, advertising would be something like a poster for a product. What's going on here is that Evernote is actually giving you the product

I agree about the harassment. This is the second time I installed evernote and I'm about to delete it again because of all the annoying adds and begathons. .Too bad because its a nice little  program but the constant interruptions to up sell is a very annoying. I told a friend about it and suggested that she download but yesterday I told her to forget it because of all the interruptions and pop up ads.

If you want to sell it ... sell it.  If its free leave it alone.

The Windows ad pops up every day and steals focus. I'd consider that quite intrusive.

I signed up for the premium evernote account (monthly vs. annually for now) and when I create a note on my Galaxy S5 Mobile App Version 7.0.7.1 it always adds a header that says: "Note from Jake Davis DEBUT ALBUM IS HERE :) @ Waukesha, Wisconsin"  See attached file for a screen shot of the note.

 

 

 Is this normal?  Why is this happening if I am a premium user?

Particularly on mobile device, in your setting, you can automate your note titles at the time of the creation of a new note. On iOS it's under General > Suggested Note Titles. 

 

Here's what it says: "Suggested note titles will use location, calendar and other information to suggest titles for your notes."

 

Some troubleshooting: Perhaps take a look at that and turn it off? It may be that the app is connecting to an event on your calendar or something of the sort. It usually suggests a note title for calendar events when the scheduled event is close to the time of the note creation. What is not clear is the part about "Other information" and from where it comes... but for sure, for Evernote to pull information in from anywhere, it must have previously been authorized by yourself... such as authorization to access location, camera roll, etc.

 

In that sense I highly doubt it is spam or that it is related to your Evernote email address. It is yourself, after all, who is creating a note, as opposed to receiving spam mail to your Evernote email address.

Spam-bots don't care about how and who created the mailaddress. And some use their Evernote-mail to lists and forums just for practical archiving (done that before...)

 

I have one old (tagged 2015-05) clip from Webclipper how still generate notes from time to time. It have been quite for over a week and I got one this afternoon.

 

And I read that Friends and Spotifiy (I don't have any of that, so I don't really know how it work) can share to Evernote

 

So @Deal Me In do you recognize the note from anything?

No, I disagree, I keep getting these painful Ads.. I am premium, but I get them everywhere. I get them when i fire up my IOS client, I get them even after I have clipped a note, with Ads ( The Space where you see the Related Notes ).. .And I am not pleased.. At all .. :angry:

 

Evernote, I do not wish to Earn more premium points by Referring more people, So could you stop the bugging please.. :wacko: :wacko: :wacko:

Sorry it took me so long to respond.  I was waiting for an email notification of a reply to my post here and it never came.  Funny enough I was going through my "Waiting" tag in EN and saw my note about this and clicked the link. So in that regard EN is working :-)

 

Now when I create notes it doesn't auto populate with that strange title.  It just stopped doing it on it's own.  

 

I googled that phrase "Jake Davis DEBUT ALBUM IS HERE" and it is related to a friend's company so it must have pulled that info somewhere from my device (facebook or google calendar maybe?).

 

Also, thanks for the tip on how to turn on/off the automatic note titles.

If I upgrade my account to Premium (which I don't need by the way), will you stop bugging me with announcements, ads, tool tips I don't care about in on my iPhone? Otherwise, I don't see the point.

Sadly no, I've been a paying premium member for a while now and it doesn't go away, they just advertise you the next service, Evernote for Business, I'm not a business owner nor I have employees but that doesn't stop them from interrupting me, and they're not even discreet, they take the most prime location they could find in their app, on the top of the main screen, and loads of it, half of the screen, pushing all of your actual content down, if you go landscape it occupies all of the screen, and it won't disappear until you actually interact with it.

Maybe I'm being picky, but I've been a premium user for many years, on Windows initially, now mostly on Android. Right now, my notes list is headed by a "card" that says "Turn business cards into detailed contacts" and has a Try Now link. I'd like not to see these at all, but I've scoured the settings, and though I've turned off all Context & Work Chats and such, I see no way to turn these off.

Worse, I don't see how to dismiss it. There is no X in the corner. I bet I could exit & reenter, and it might go away, but that's not good enough. Even seeing it is not good enough. How do I get rid of them, and if I HAVE to see them, how do I dismiss it with one quick tap?
