Safari Web Clipper not doing anything when clicked

I'm having a problem with the web clipper that seems to have started just today, possibly yesterday.

When I click the evernote clipper button in Safari (Mac Mavericks), absolutely nothing happens a large percentage of the time. some URLs that this happens on:

https://extensions.apple.com

http://accent.gmu.edu

https://www.exchangebitcoins.com/auth/login

it does work on news.google.com, so the clipper is "working" sometimes, but for many many URLs recently absolutely nothing happens at all.

Thanks

I want to concur with the previous post ... I too am experiencing the SAME SYMPTOMS.

I am unable to get clipper to respond on numerous websites (some which previously had no issues) - yet, the google site mentioned above worked fine.

I noticed this problem yesterday when I tried to clip a Wiki Article ... I assumed it was just some scripting on Wiki that was blocking - then I tried to clip a note on the UC Berkley site and "nothing."

Not only did clicking the toolbar icon do "nothing" there are no context menu options there either.

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling web clipper -but same results.

This ... Is ... Annoying (to say the least).

P.S. Clipper works (for me) on:

news.google.com

plato.stanford.edu

Thanks for the report, we're aware of the issue and can reproduce it sometimes but it's one elusive problem that isn't consistent. Things that would be helpful:

- Safari, Web Clipper and OS versions.

- Internal Web Clipper error logs (go to the Clipper options page > View Logs > Export logs

- The URL where this happens to you and if it persists over a Safari restart.

As reported by Adam:

1) extensions.apple.com is expected not to clip since it is blocked

2) http://accent.gmu.edu - This one we can reproduce and it has been added to the list of fixes we need to do.

3) https://www.exchangebitcoins.com/auth/login - Clips fine on our testing on Safari 7.1 / 10.9.1 latest Clipper 6.0.8

As reported by rjsherman:

plato.stanford.edu - Clips fine in our testing. Will test on more configurations.

news.google.com - Clips fine in our testing.

Add me to the list. :D

Also can't find the Web Clipper option page.

Web Clipper happens to not work on this very page here in the forums along with many other site. ;)

A Safari restart does not seem to solve the problem.

We can repro the problem and it's been added to the fix list. Sorry for the inconvenience and thanks for the report.

Were you able to repro on the other URLs mentioned in this thread? Seems much larger than just a few particular URLs

Yes, I am experiencing the same issue with any page off of Wikipedia and this very Evernote User Forum page too.

Added to the list:

http://laist.com

http://www.cnn.com

http://www.macrumors.com

Additionally, all YouTube pages fail to clip as full pages or articles and embedded YouTube videos are not holding within their boundaries on clipped web pages--it spreads out across the remaining part of the page. All three issues seem to have surfaced around the same time.

OS X 10.9.1

Safari 7.0.1 (9537.73.11)

Web Clipper 6.0.8

The http://accent.gmu.edu/ works fin in our testing. Article detection is poor but it clips with no issues for us.

The extensions.apple.com site is restricted by Apple and we're not able to work around that constraint.

Now it's working... ! Not sure what I did wrong the after the upgrade, but you're right it's working now. Glad the apple site isn't an actual break, but a restriction. Is there a way to show a small message "[Author name] has restricted the Evernote clipper on this page" or something so that I'll know next time if it's a bug I should report vs proper function?

Thanks for the fixes!

Hi all, we have a fix version for this issue that we are testing right now. If you have a few moments to see if it works for you that's appreciated.

Get the build here:

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/685245/6.0.8.1.safariextz

Appreciate if you post back if it resolves it for you.

Don't work on this page.

http://www.kiaoffargo.com/used/Kia/2011-Kia-Soul-fargo-009b22930a0a00de4708fa0df615eca8.htm

Also most pages it now acts like it's going to work because the menu comes sliding out of the right side of the screen, but then it pops up that a screenshot was captured and then the menu sides back out of view all without me doing anything but clicking on the clipper icon at the top.

Anyway seems all screwed up for me yet.

@AJ

The default behavior for the Clipper is to remember your last used action and then start in that. (our data indicates users tend to favor one type of clip articles, bookmarks, screenshots etc.) So if the last used action is screenshot then it will take the screenshot when you start it.

This can be changed on the options page.

The site

http://www.kiaoffargo.com/used/Kia/2011-Kia-Soul-fargo-009b22930a0a00de4708fa0df615eca8.htm

Clips fine in our testing on all supported configs.

Having sporadic problems with the Web Clipper as well. Getting an error when I try to install the version you linked to this page. ??? I was having some permissions issues that I thought caused the Clipper misbehavior, but I'm currently on a clean installation with no permissions customization (once burned, twice shy!). Anyone else having this problem? jbignert, your input is welcome.

As with other Safari users here I discovered today that my Web Clipper isn't working. Nothing happens when it's clicked. I reinstalled Evernote, and then tried to install the fix you had made, but Safari will not allow that extension to be installed. The Safari notification box reads: Safari can't install this extension. An error occurred while installing the extension "Evernote Web Clipper."  I'm running the latest versions of Mavericks and Safari.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Still does not work on this page: http://www.siliconrus.com/2014/01/37signals-benefits/

When Clipper is disabled, no error in Web Console, but when it is enabled a lot of JS errors are shown. Looks like it conflicts with some Facebook JS:

It now appears that the Safari Web Clipper doesn't work on any pages except for a very select few. For example, I can get it to come up on gmail, but it fails on all of the following (just to take a bunch of examples that I've tried in the past few minutes):

http://www.cultofmac.com/257129/the-mesh-card-wallet-is-so-small-it-fits-inside-any-other-wallet/

http://www.businessinsider.com/this-hoodie-is-so-insanely-popular-you-have-to-wait-months-to-get-it-2013-12

http://www.technologytell.com/apple/127219/change-the-color-of-the-lumen-tl800-led-smart-bulb-with-an-iphone/

After a bit more testing, it appears that the issue may have something to do with whether the page I'm trying to clip is the first tab in a Safari window. I was just able to verify this by trying to use the clipper on a page and failing, then dragging that tab to be the first tab in that window, and then trying to clip again (and being successful). I suppose that'll make it much easier to work around, but it's still a very annoying behavior.

I just tried on that cult of mac page, and had lots of trouble getting it to clip as well. though if i just clicked + waited + clicked + waited etc for ~20s, then it finally ended up working w/o having to move it to a new tab position. it just takes a very long time and multiple clicks for it to get working it seems.

Hi there, The fix didn't fix it for me. Clipper starts clipping but doesn't finish its job.

I come accross this behaviour pretty regularly on lifehacker.com, just today on:

http://lifehacker.com/5932009/the-complete-guide-to-solid+state-drives

Mountain Lion 10.9.1

Safari 7.0.1 (9537.73.11)

Evernote Clipper 6.0.8.1 (latest test build from this thread)

Have already reset Safari, reinstalled Clipper.

Right now I rather email websites to my account than trying to clip them as clipping repeatedly doesn't work. Hope you can fix that. It disrupts my workflow in an otherwise great app!

Thnx.

Come on, guys—the Web Clipper for Safari is just totally erratic and unreliable. Some days it works on some sites, then suddenly—for no apparent reason—it won't work on any page at all.

It's just not ready for prime time, and although it gets worse with each subsequent "update", it has never really worked reliably—and this extremely irritating for those of us who pay and count on some semblance of functionality.

Evernote has been consistently unreliable (if that's not an oxymoron), nowhere more so than with the Web Clipper, and this is tremendously frustrating. At least 25-30% of the time I have to use Skitch to grab a page, then manually enter in a title and url, etc. And then, of course, it's not in editable text format.

I'm trying to transition to DEVONthink—their apps, including Office Pro, have no such problem. Their universal "Sorter" will take in everything I throw at it: from emails to videos to Word docs to web pages. So it's not as if it's some technical impossibility. And their cost starts to look reasonable, even cheap, after I look back at not only the fee for Evernote Premium, but the enormous waste of valuable time I've spent trying to get Evernote to work properly and as advertised.

I've downloaded web clipper 6.1 (is this the successor to 6.0.8.1?) for safari 7.0.1 running on OS X 10.9.1, and the problem remains. I am mostly clipping articles on www.sciencedaily.com. The first one usually works, and the second gives me a "thinking about it" pattern of flashing white dots in a grey square.

So far, if I quit safari and re-open, the first one works and the second doesn't. Sometimes, if I close the page and reopen it, the clipper will kick into gear. It's very inconsistent, though.

very frustrating, as others have noted. Hope it gets fixed soon, since it is a great product I rely on every day!

I use web clipper 6.1.3 in safari 7.04 on a Macbook pro running Mavericks 10.9.3. I've re-installed the web clipper a couple times and sometimes that helps when there are problems. One thing I have found is that the web clipper can be finicky. For example, I only see a revolving wait circle if I have my bookmarks sidebar open. I mostly use the web clipper to clip articles on the Science Daily website. I've found that if the clipper won't open, refreshing the page usually clears up the problem.

Over and over, and somewhat randomly, the clipper stops functioning. Refresh the web page, and the clipper works just fine. Until it stops on some other page and I refresh again. Once in a while that doesn't work, but quitting and reopening safari, even with your tabs open, seems to reset the clipper and I'm good to go again.

The clipper is so useful, and so essential to my workflow, that I've come to regard the glitches as just part of using the current product. The new mac operating systems due in the fall promise to make everything more seamless in the future.

Same deal for me. Multiple tabs open, no Clipper action. Only works on this page. This has been happening for over a week now. I'm dying without the Clipper. Having to open the app, add urls and drag in screen shots. Major bummer!

If I want to use Web Clipper, I copy the link from Safari to Chrome or Firefox! I don't know why this long-running issue isn't fixed. It has changed my preference from Safari to the other "big two" browsers as my primary choices for websurfing. I think the Web Clipper works overall the smoothest in Chrome.

Can you confirm that you have JavaScript enabled in your Safari Preferences? Other possible causes can be conflict with other extensions that limits JavaScript or Adblockers / Popup blockers.

We cannot reproduce the problems and in our testing it works as expected.

I have Javascript enabled. The only other safari extensions I use are 1Password and Firebug Lite, and I almost never use the latter.

I just wanted to add in that I'm seeing very similar behavior to those mentioned above, including the clipping hotkey/toolbar button not doing anything until I refresh the page, certain pages failing most or all of the time, etc.

In particular, just recently github stopped working. I can't get the clipper to work on any github.com page I've tried. If you want a specific link, go here: https://github.com/austinzheng/swift-2048

If I select something like "save bookmark to evernote", nothing happens. If I tap the toolbar button, nothing happens (no spinning activity indicator, no slide out sidebar, nothing). If I hit the web clipper hotkey, nothing happens. I'm certain that the web clipper used to work so either something changed on github or something broke in the web clipper in the last week or three.

I'm having the exact same problem with github -- though I figured out why.

Getting the following in the Safari error console:

@jbignert, thanks for looking into this and thanks to @rgacote for thinking to check the safari error log.

That's really a pain. Does it appear that github is singling out Evernote intentionally or are they just blocking similar clippers?

I just installed the clipper today and quickly found out it wasn't working anywhere outside of Evernote's own site. Literally doing nothing when clicking the button. (Latest version of everything: OS X, Safari, the clipper.)

I got it fixed by removing a Safari plugin. Removing plugins is easy - see this link; http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3230. All you have to do is delete the file, and restart Safari. Make sure to read this support article first though. It contains a list of plugins that should NOT be removed, and that cannot be reinstalled without reinstalling OS X. BE CAREFUL.

I would also recommend removing plugins one by one, and checking if the clipper is working after each removal. In my case, the first one I removed was apparently the culprit, as the clipper is now working great. Well not on github, but that's unrelated to the Safari issue.

jbignert: the interfering plugin was the citrix receiver; CitrixICAClientPlugIn.plugin. Maybe this'll help EN track down the issue?

@DaivdHill

GitHub is blocking our Clipper from running on their site and there appears to be nothing we can do at the moment to workaround this issue.

With all due respect, github is not blocking Clipper.  Github is using the (relatively new) industry standard content security policy to prevent unauthorized code from executing on their website (think 3rd party cookie tracking, isp tracking, etc). They are an early adopter, but with the nature of security issues on the web, this is likely to expand.

What is interesting is that the Safari version of web clipper uses a safari-extension://com.evernote... url to load it's user interface.  Apparently, this is not necessary in chrome or firefox (or they would be "blocking", too).  Best I can tell, the implementation approach for the extension on Safari is no longer workable.  The question is whether apple should exempt safari-extension urls from the security policy or is evernote should find an implementation that doesn't inject a bunch of html into the page.

Does Evernote have a plan for this?  Or, are they working with Apple to resolve the situation?

Had same issue and came here for answers but during that time discovered a fix (for me anyways) maybe it will help others.

Like others, I installed and dragged to menu bar to use and had no effect when clicking. So I went into preferences under extensions, go to the Evernote clipper extension (which says enabled) - disable it, then re-enable it. This actively sends you to the 'What's new Evernote page' and seems to make it work as it should (note: the icon also looks different with a • under the Elephant as well - means its active i think). So I think essentially its just not actually running on installation and needs the manual 'boost' to activate it. Hope this helps!

UPDATE:

well not so fast - the • indicates you need to set your log in - after I did that it seemed not to work, Disabled then re-enabled again and it seems to work now. just an FYI.

I downloaded the latest version of OS X (Mavericks) to my macbook, trying to fix the lack of effectiveness of the evernote web clipper.  Not one thing changed.  I really wanted to be able to use web clipper the way it was supposed to work -- with the black sidebar listing article, simplified article, etc...

The only way I could fix this situation without going through a lot of workarounds that I didn't understand, as mentioned by the above posters, was to download Chrome. I have been told that Chrome is more user-friendly, and it would appear that they are right.  Web clipper now works the way it should.

Link to comment

Just got around to installing it (via 2-step authentication).

Same problem. Mac 10.9.4, Safari 7.0.5, Webclipper 6.1.3 Macbook retina 2013, no other extensions installed!

I will also get the large dotted clock-like face waiting/hourglass icon in the middle of the web page until i reload the page. After I restart Safari sometime it will work on the same web page where it didn't before the restart.

As one software developer to another saying it "works on my machine" is unexceptable.. :) Set up a share screen session with someone or ask for log dumps, whatever.

My web clipper works fine on my iMac with the same settings, so something subtle is going on and it's probably hardware related.

Good luck!

Safari Web Clipper was working perfectly fine on GitHub pages but not anymore so I had to copy-paste stuff to Evernote manually until I realized that Chrome still works.

Could it be related to Content Security Policy somehow? See screenshot http://note.io/1sPrxRJ I think Github rolled that out recently. Chrome doesn't throw any errors into console.

I too am experiencing the problem with Github. As more sites implement CSP this problem will grow.

I noticed that the 1Password plug-in works fine. I guess, if CSP is the Web Clipper's problem, 1Password doesn't reach out the Internet.

Is it possible to have a version of the Evernote browser plug-in that doesn't violate the CSP? Maybe it can communicate with the desktop application or degrade gracefully so some of the functions work. It's more important to get the idea, the clip, into Evernote than it is to get the related notes and such.

I've reported the intermittent problem with Safari before. It hasn't been happening frequently as of late. Can understand the recommendation to disable (possibly) conflicting extensions. Have tried that with no success. Interesting that I have the same extensions installed in Safari, Chrome, Firefox. . .Safari is the only browser in which the Clipper stops operating.

I generally uninstall the Web Clipper extension, then restart Safari and reinstall the Web Clipper extension, always downloaded directly from Evernote. The Web Clipper works fine, then. . .until the next time it stops working. I have not found that any particular website triggers the non-function issue. Seems random on my M

I've had this issue on and off since I can remember, using Safari 8.0 and just installed the latest and greatest Evernote 6.2.4. If anyone at Evernote is interested in my log files or anything, they know where I am. As a long term premium user and fan-boy of Evernote and someone who thinks Evernote should just sell to Apple and get it over with, this lack of Medium attention and concern is a tad off-putting. Saying it "works fine in our testing" is hardly solving the issues. Where can I send a couple of oars for our friends at Evernote who are floating on the calm river waters of Denial?

Safari 8.0 and ENC 6.2.43

It will happily clip a tab from anything from the evernote.com domain

No response at all for any other URLs

Make me wonder...are the Evernote team testing it on their own site and happily reporting it works?

I am getting seriously misaligned with this product. In the last year I have stepped up to Premium and then our whole company moved to Business. Simultaneously, release after release has been buggy, they've fu*&%ed with the interface (including the appalling Yosemite-induced design) but overall, it just doesn't work any more. I spend more time maintaining it than it saves me.  Getting close to looking for an alternative....

Evernote web clipping only working on Evernote site on Safari. All updates completed. Tried re-installing. No help. I depend on Evernote web clipping heavily for my business that is why I pay for Premium. Please fix.

A link to any site you are having trouble clipping would be useful. The few times I have had trouble clipping a site in Safari, I've simply turned the Evernote Safari Extension OFF and ON again. To do this:

SAFARI > PREFS > EXTENSIONS > EVERNOTE WEB CLIPPER > ON/OFF > switch to OFF, switch back to ON. Should be good to go now.

Did this eliminate your problem?

I had an older edition of Evernote (5.?) and a couple of weeks ago upgraded to 6.0.5. Since then, I have not been able to use web clipper. I press it and nothing happens.

*** Update (10:32 p.m.) - I fixed it by uninstalling the clipper, and then going and getting it again, installing it, and restarting my computer.

Add me to the frustrated "web clipper isn't working on Safari" crew.

Sounds like Evernote's working on it, but just in case - here are my details:

  • OS X Yosemite v10.10.1
  • Safari v8.0.2
  • Evernote Web Clipper v6.2.4

Amazing how dependent I am on Evernote in my daily personal/business life - am reminded when there is a glitch!

Look forward to hearing it's resolved.  Thanks!

Same problem here. Web Clipper just stops working. I click on the icon in the toolbar, nothing at all happens.

OS X Yosemite 10.10.2

Safari 8.0.3

Web Clipper 6.2.4

Right-click menu still works, but as it's less full-featured, it would be really nice to have the real extension working consistently.

HI - I'm new to Evernote and am too experiencing issues with Safari and web clipper.

It's not working for me on these sites or articles:

I saw advice up earlier to download a fix link and have done that but it's not working,

Thanks.

Hi MJL,

Thanks for the feedback. Both the URLs you posted clips just fine in our testing on Safari 8.0.3 on OSX 10.10.2 using Web Clipper 6.2.4.

I recommend trying to restart Safari and make sure you are running latest Web Clipper version to begin with.

I no longer can use the "share"to access Evernote web clipper on Safari 8.0.3.  When I select the Evernote 6.0.6 icon on the Safari toolbar, the only options I have is to write a note or clip a screen. I have downloaded the latest version of the web clipper for Safari. Since I am now knee-deep into using Evernote to go paperless, I need this feature to return.  Advice?

Hello All,

Not sure if this was mentioned. I discovered that Web clipper doesn't like browser  tabs. That is the first browser window Web Clipper works. In tabs from that window it doesn't work.

Mac OS 10.9.5

Safari 7.1.3

Hi NoDTMF,

I'm not sure I understand exactly what you mean with your report. Can you elaborate with a step by step description that I can reproduce the problem with?

Sure

Open a new window in Safari. Web Clipper will work. Create a new tab, so now Safari window has two tabs. I like to think of it as the original window plus 1 tab. Click on that tab. Try Web clipper.

Now I just did this and Web clipper worked!

I will try to see if I can figure out what I did different from yesterday to today. I will post what I discover

Okay, I was wrong on the tabs. Sorry. Simply,  Web Clipper won't clip this page:

Evernote Web Clipper was working just fine last week before I went on vacation.  I came back and now it doesn't work.  I thought maybe I had to do some updates, which I did but it's still not working.  I even tried reinstalling the web clipper.  After updates, I'm now using:

Yosemite v. 10.10.2

Safari 8.0.3

Web Clipper 6.2.4

Ironically, when I clicked on the clipper to get the version just now, it attempted to clip this page but it will not clip any other page I try.  I've been trying to clip several blog pages on different blogs.
