mac (Archived) Evernote for Mac 5.4.3

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

Evernote for Mac 5.4.3 was released today via direct download. The Mac App Store is very backed up so we don't have a timeline on when that will go out, but it's in Apple's hands now. This version has a ton of great fixes. Here are the release notes:

Improved support for OS X 10.9

New Markup Features
- Rotate or delete pages from a PDF
- Add a markup summary page to annotated PDFs
- Easily clear all markup
- Flip or rotate images

Other Fixes
- Improved support for dragging images from web browsers
- Various bug and crash fixes

As always, let us know what you think!

Jack

Hi Jack,

After this update the Scansnap Manager application 'Scan to Evernote' fails. See my post about it on the forum.

These are comments on Version 5.4.3 (402231)

(1) Incorrect search results

- In the screenshot below you can see that searching for a term pulled up the note in the note list, but the term apparently doesn’t exist in the document. The term is also not in the title, so I don’t know why this not was found.

(2) Incremental search

- Still slow. It regularly takes me ten seconds or more to get a search to complete. I would like to repeat my request for the ability to turn this thing off. I think the search is probably blazing fast, but how can it hope to do well when it is searching for "the" and other parts of a search I have not yet finished typing?

Hi. After more than 10 support tickets for evernote and the default recomendation of "delete and instal", i can conclude and realize that you, guys, are NOT interested to develop a great software for mac.

First of all, even being a premium user, the answer off all my questions are the same and what was the first question? The search tool for email address is awkward. I can't search for a simply email like luis@gmail.com because evernote search all luis all @gmail all .com. It's annoying but i know guys, you don't care.

Now, with Evernote 5.4.3 (402231) something stranger is happening. When i move Evernote from a place in my window to another place (hold and drag), the scrollbar changes the position of my text. If i was at, i don't know, line 514 and change the place of the software (from the center of my window, to left), my line goes to 4....

Honestly, whats is happening to you, guys ? I have Evernote on my Mac, Ipad and Iphone and now i'm really think about coming back to Pages. I used to used Evernote to write anotations in my Phd, but, now, i spend more time trying to use the software than using it in a satisfactory way.

What is the Main Goal of this enterprise, but i'm completely convinced that is not Qualitify. Maybe, do something green and beautiful. I'm guessing the answer: "sorry, we're working on it.Try to delete your Evernote, pray, have faith, don't loose your hope and, maybe, we can do somehitng for you next decade"

Cya

Luis (by the way, my fist language is not english. I'm trying to do my best)

I don't find it's that difficult.
put your email address in quotes.

See: http://dev.evernote.com/doc/articles/search_grammar.php

"Matching literal terms"

It's the same issue and solution in Google actually.

I'll grant you the dragging behavior is a curious one...

My cursor stays where it is, but each time I drag the window a little to the left the text scrolls a little toward the top of the note.

Search is not working as always and this curious behavior is annoying. Swear to god, Evernote team test Evernote on Mac before delivier the software?

Did you try what I said? I don't think it has anything to do with the version. That's the way the search grammar is supposed to work.

Grumpy can I pile onto your request?

I don't seem to have as much slowness as you on the search but I wouldn't mind a preference to be able to exclude the body from incremental search but still the tags, recent searches, saved searches.

And maybe the addition of note titles.

Perhaps it's just shorter to say a checkbox to exclude note body from incremental search.

Or perhaps an option to delay it's kicking in for 5 seconds so you can crank off an unimpeded search on the basics before the full weight of searching on everything.

Many times. It's not working

But it's ok...

I can't do anything again.

I'm not especially interested in excluding the note body. I just want incremental search turned off. That seems a much simpler solution, it is something our Windows brothers and sisters can do (with a registry hack), and it is something that is fairly common (Google does it).

As for Luis's problem, I hope that he will include his support ticket numbers, because it sounds like we need to figure out what the problem is and how to solve it. As far as the email search goes, your suggestion of quotes around the email address should solve it. But, maybe there is something we are missing here.

I don't mean for the whole search, I'm only talking about incremental search.  You can imagine that it would be far more instant if it was only narrowing the items I listed in the search drop down rather than narrowing the whole search list based on the entire text of all your notebooks.  At the point you hit enter, that should be the normal full on search against everything according to search grammar.

The point is only to minimize or reduce the inter-character lag (if any, depending on Evernote content, or PC speed), while typing search terms, without fully neutering the usefulness out of it.

Hello. I have more than 10 tickets opened about the search thing. The last message was "ok, we know about that and now you'll win a extra bonus for had told us that"

Thank you for reaching out to Evernote Technical Support. I have been asked to assist you with your case.

Sorry that you are having an issue with the Evernote search feature, Normally putting a search term in "quotes" will allow a search on only that string. It appears that this is not working for you.

We are sorry that you are experiencing problems.

And now i'm having this problems when i change the evernote position...

It Happens, but ill not renew my Premium account.

Thanks

Obrigado,

Ernst

Basically, he said: "we know the problem. We ll fix in the next version (he didn't) and gave me 10 points of bonus..."

if i want bonus, ill ask for points

it is something our Windows brothers and sisters can do (with a registry hack)

Seems to me anything that can be done via a registry setting aught to be in an advanced preference menu.

I had a quick look in the package contents for a plist equivalent but didn't find anything.

I did however discover some hints for searches I had no idea I could do before... And don't find (at least via search) in the documentation.

Tiny example but love that I can drill down to postit notes snapped by my iphone but not my ipad.

(3) Popup dialogue box

- Please stop this. I am not a child. I am an adult who has stuff to do and no interest in clicking "OK" on dialog boxes. I know you are trying to "educate" me about the fact that Evernote can search documents, but you are only annoying me.

My Evernote keeps freezing my Mavericks randomly. When I turn Evernote off, everything gets back to normal. Not sure what to do, as this is forcing me to completely not use Evernote, as these freezes are interrupting my computer work to the point of unusability.

We obviously do care since we've responded to "10 support requests," given you points valid for a free upgrade, and responded to you on the forum. To reiterate (as other users here already have), you can search for emails using quotes.

GM, re: incrimental search. As are a lot of these issues, this is more challenging than you'd think. We are working on speeding up search (and everything else) drastically very soon.

Can't you sprinkles some ground up unicorn horns on it and get it done more quickly!? Yeah, I know this all takes time, but I am impatient about this. I think the search would be faster (for me, at least) if we could turn off incremental search (instead of trying to speed it up). You guys need to take some of that time you spend sipping lattes while watching Dr. Who and use it for fulfilling my requests. Get it done!

Hi there. First of all, thanks for the answer, but i tried to use "search tool" in different ways. It didn't work, but its ok. Now "i'm used to it". I'm not a "app developer", but i really don't understand why is so difficult to do things that works property, like "search".

Another thing. I realized (and i don't know if Evernote Main Goal is that) that i use Evernote more than Pages or the entire iwork and i do almost everything related to text in Evernote. (exemple: i take notes, write articles for students, review texts and manage some ebooks.

Unfortunately, some aspects are not that good: use tables are horrible, i think is not allowed to insert Math Formulas inside and the experience of review (like mark or highlight) a PDF is not good. If my tip was requested, honesty i'll suggest to you, guys, make Evernote for a next level, a one that we can easily replace iwork.

Would it be possible in future versions to use the app while processing or connecting? Ideally, whatever those activities are, I'd like to see them in the background and not affecting the app's performance.

I keep a back-up copy of Evernote 4 and every time I install Evernote 5, I revert to 4 after a short while. Even one year later, Evernote 5 is a huge step back in usability for me because I am a heavy tagger. As I had pointed out last year (http://discussion.evernote.com/topic/30928-evernote-for-mac-public-beta-is-here/page-2), Evernote 5 is worse for people who rely on tags for mainly three reasons. Allow me to re-iterate them here on the occasion of a new release.

1) There is no visual feedback which tag you have selected in the sidebar (there is a similar issue with the notebooks, http://discussion.evernote.com/topic/38315-current-notebook-not-highlighted-on-the-sidebar/). This is much better in Windows, and was better in Evernote 4.

2) The tag area in a note is ridiculously small and has become even smaller in Evernote 5. It is impossible for me to see more than one or two tags assigned to a note, even though the hierarchical tagging system would theoretically allow Evernote to be quite a powerful research tool. The tag implementation is not ideal in the Windows version, but at least there I can call a dedicated tag window to see a list of all assigned tags. Why can't we at least get that feature on the Mac. I am also still dreaming of the day where the selected tag gets highlighted in the sidebar, and all other tags assigned to that note get highlighted in a lighter gradient and we are allowed to resize the "tag area" in the note information header.

3) Evernote 5 no longer tells me in the sidebar how many notes are assigned to one tag. (Edit: Turns out I simply overlooked the option to turn that on. Back into the hole for me)

Below are two screenshots for your viewing pleasure, demonstrating the tag usability gap between the current Windows and the current Mac version:

Jay-Squared, partial answer:

1) I heartily support your issue with the lack of visual feedback for tags selected in the sidebar.

However, Jack recently assured me off-list that this was on his road-map and would be addressed in a future update. Let's hope that update comes soon.

3) You can restore your tags' note count by going to the View menu and selecting Sidebar Options > Show Note Counts.

(3) Popup box again, and again, and again

- Please stop this. I cannot tell you how infuriating it is to be stopped in the middle of getting stuff done to click "OK" on an infomercial for Evernote services -- services I already have and I already know about! It comes up again, and again, and again. Is the thinking: "in an effort to inform some people of our services (good intention) we'll spam everyone (bad practice)?" The dialog box doesn't even display all of the text, so I don't think it is effectively informing anyone of anything (see the screenshot below). It is just annoying.

This is not intended to be spam. You should only be seeing this once. Please PM me if this is getting displayed repeatedly. That would be a bug.

Thanks for reporting the cut off text. This is a bug which only happens in Japanese. I’ve reported it internally.

Cool. I don't want to see it once, much less multiple times. I strongly recommend the developers reconsider popups to convey information, especially in the middle of an operation. As you can tell, I have strong feelings about being interrupted in my work :)

I am also getting the startup screen. A mild annoyance tgat has been occurring off and on for a year or more, but it dhides in the background, so avoids angering me until I try to shut stuff down, and by then I haven't got the energy to rant on the forums about it.

GM, couldn't agree more.

It appears that Evernote UI designers are always quick to jump on the latest "cool" web/app UI design.

I have noticed over the last several months that more and more web sites now how popups every time you visit them.

This is most irritating.

I don't know if it is "new." Porn sites and other unsavory locations on the web have been using them for a long time. Nowadays, we find (as you said) all kinds of mainstream sites with the popups. Some applications I use have similar infomercial approaches (Apple comes to mind), but everyone allows me to turn off these "helpful" tips. Evernote is the only app I can think of that will hijack my app and throw up roadblocks to getting stuff done. I really hope they consider removing this "feature."

GM, multiple people have asked for steps to reproduce. We can't see any "spammy" popups at all. We see a popup that tells you that PDFs are searchable that should only appear the first time you drop a PDF. If you are getting multiple messages like this, it is a bug. Please help us by providing us steps to reproduce the issue.

I tried all day today... No popups. I can't understand it either. I did bilk imports, individual ones, and imports into the notebooks on two accounts. I'll keep at it. Heck, i'm just glad they are gone right now!

We didn't change any functionality in those popups. In fact, we didn't even change the "Calls to Action" (buttons). We just redesigned them to make them prettier. Funny that they were being construed as "spammy"...

It's only spammy if I have to see it. I came across another one, which also has cutoff text.

https://www.evernote.com/shard/s74/sh/627c045e-1c4e-4a58-91e5-9fffc3849a18/98bef1adfa22efb87221dd6df5e4a222

I think I see what is happening (now that I am seeing different popups -- one for Free users and another for existing Premium users). I have four accounts, so four opportunities (apparently) to run into this popup message. When switching among them (you can only login to one premium account at a time, so it might be the first time I have accessed a couple of them since installing the app) you run into the popups. I think the computer ought to remember that I have already seen the informercials, but I guess from Evernote's perspective there are four users on this computer. The fact that I delete account information if I am not using it (Evernote gobbles up my storage space -- when are we going to get that selective sync?) probably didn't help. In other words, I am a corner case, and that is probably why I am the only one ranting.

I don't remember seeing the popups before, but I must have. My annoyance with popups is, legen--wait for it... dary.

http://discussion.evernote.com/topic/24845-request-lets-improve-evernote-ios-419-now-44/?p=131188

It definitely isn't a new thing, though I do see a place for them, especially if I am doing an action that I might not want to do. For example, I have actually asked for popups before I share something or before I create / move a note into a "public" space in my account.

Jack, nothing "funny" about it.  :)

I have posted before my dislike of EN displaying info/popups that market EN in the EN app.  These are just ads (spam) like the other ads that EN allows the Premium user to turn off (not display).  It seems to me that EN should respect the user's choice to NOT see any ads, including Evernote ads.

Regardless of whether or not I am running the latest version, I will speak out against any bugs or changes in the latest version that I don't like.

I would love to update to the latest version -- as soon as you produce a version without any material bugs.  :)

Location of cursor in the note automatically moves up the note every time the note window is dragged!

Since the most recent upgrade via the App Store, every time I MOVE my note by left clicking on the note window and moving it, it "auto scrolls" the cursor to the top depending on how far I have dragged the window! This is driving me NUTS as the note keeps moving all the way to the top and I have to scroll back down to the position I was at before (pages down). Very annoying!

Jack, you noted the issue a few days ago now, when is the fix coming? I am actively using Evernote for research and this is definitely impending productivity and is very annoying.

mv1234, the autoscroll bug is indeed annoying and we will have it fixed in our next release.

JM, there will never be such a thing as a bug-free release... of anything.

GM, the primary reason for those popups is to inform the user of something critical or of some important functionality. Did you know that most of our users didn't know they could search office documents? Either way, you are also correct that we assume that most users aren't logging in/out of 4 accounts on their own.

How do you know that? You put them in there on purpose!? Just kidding :)

I cannot disagree strongly enough about this approach of assuming ignorance among all users. I am sure there are all kinds of things I don't know about Evernote, even after using it for several years now, but I don't want a popup interrupting me to "educate" me with an "informercial." Instead, how about something in the preferences that turns off these informercial things? Let users who don't want to be "educated" continue on in blissful ignorance (me)!

4) In Evernote 4, the user was able to make a tag the child of another tag by dragging the intended child tag onto the intended parent tag. Evernote 5.4.3 still does not support this behaviour, effectively making it impossible to assign "new" tags (that is tags that are not yet assigned to any note but intended to be the child of another tag) from the web clipper, as this presupposes the ability to later change the tag hierarchy.

It is almost as if Evernote 5 actively discourages people from using Evernote if they rely on hierarchical tags, which as far as my research is concerned is the only competitive advantage Evernote has over simply using a bibtex file and Bibdesk.

Realising this is also the last straw for me why I once again revert back to Evernote 4.

Um...  How do you figure?  (version disclosure: 5.1.0.1926)

  • You can drag and drop tags in hierarchies in the sidebar (not sure that's always been the case in v5)
  • Clicking tags in the sidebar brings up the tag view. They're all drag and drop-able into to hierarchies there (think that's always been the case in v5)

That does indeed work for me but I tend not to use the light grey on slightly lighter grey readability disaster that is tag view, and it seems counterintuitive that Evernote for Mac would not allow drag-and-drop management in the sidebar if it used to do that and still does on Windows.

JM, there will never be such a thing as a bug-free release... of anything.

.

Jack, you misquoted me.  I did NOT say "bug-free"

I said:

I would love to update to the latest version -- as soon as you produce a version without any material bugs

This is VERY possible.  The point being that Evernote needs to conduct more and better testing PRIOR to release.

Jack, thanks for reverting on the dragging bug. Any idea when this will be done by? (Roughly - days/weeks/months?)

Also, I'm surprised no one hit this issue in UAT at EN. Pretty easy to run into if you just use the product! :)

cheers all.

EXACTLY!   One more example of lack of proper testing PRIOR to release.

Dear Jackoliscious:  My Evernote for Mac 5.4.3 will not import from my Scan Snap S1500M.  I use OSX 10.9.

I tried to work with your chat guy, but he said he had to do some research and was not back 15 minutes later.  This is not funny!

Have you opened a support ticket? If you haven't, you probably should. Use the link in my signature.

By the way, reporting a post to the moderators doesn't get you to the support people.  :)

Best of luck.

  • I gotcha on the mac vs. windows thing.  It can be a challenge to attempt a unified UI cross platform (short of lowest common denominator approaches like Java), I'm not going to guess but sometimes, doing the same thing the same way on different platforms (bug/quirk free) isn't as easy with the tools available to a dev, as it seems it should be.
  • On "the second option" I would gently again suggest we resist the temptation to throw up hands after a 25 cent tour, and when not finding things to be as they were in v4, to assume the worst.
    • Sure they have work to do.  But there's also a lot of good in there.  And there are solutions (some will argue which side of the balance sheet to put them on) to a lot things posted as solution-less.
    • It takes dropping your pre-conceptions, and trying this almost as a new application.  In fact read the tips and documentation, and grok how the application wants to be used, instead of trying to swim against the current, grasping for things to hold on-to which aren't there any more, or perhaps not back yet.

  • Dragging and dropping in the sidebar is not a Windows-v-Mac thing as it used to be possible in previous versions of Evernote for Mac

Even if you were right about me having to drop my "pre-conceptions, and trying this almost as a new application" and learn "how the application wants to be used" (against which I would argue that it might be preferable to design an application to cater to the user, not the other way around, and the user expects drag-and-dropability in the sidebar because it is not only existent in other versions of Evernote but a lot of other Mac applications), the fact is that the tag view is not only very hard to read, but also not as powerful in displaying a tag hierarchy as the sidebar with its proper tree view.

I had pointed out most of my concerns while Evernote 5 was still in beta stage, so the fact that they are not yet fixed a year later I think allows me to raise the issue again, which is all I am doing. How do you expect the designers to ever "put things back" or "sort out quirks" if we the users don't notify them?

Am running into the following problems in 5.4.3 (402231):

1. Painfully long "Processing" time

(Carry over from two updates ago)

Began a couple of versions ago...got slightly better with the first update...now worse again, even more than originally. Have been staring at a "Processing" bar for the better part of 30 minutes, in spite of not touching EN in the interim. Just. Keeps. Processing. (Tied to auto-sync, maybe?)

2. Text whites out

(Carry over from two versions ago; already on Level 2's radar)

Is now worse than before. Used to be that all the text would white out when you opened an existing note. Now, pasting causes it...spacing down a couple of lines causes it...inserting a new row to an existing table causes it.... Am experiencing this problem about 1 of every 3 notes I touch.

3. Dragging a note causes content to rapidly scroll to the top

(New problem)

Think: Double click a note to open it in its own window...scroll down through the note...then drag it (by the top bar) to a different location on the screen. Note content rapidly scrolls all the way back to the top, forcing user to search for where they were before dragging.

It's getting tough to use EN these days...and I rely on it heavily.

Sorry to complain; really wanted to point out something new and improved in this post, but can't put my finger on anything specific. :(

: : : Update : : :

Just noticed someone else reported the auto-scroll thing. Didn't intend to sound like an echo.

Dragging and dropping in the sidebar is not a Windows-v-Mac thing as it used to be possible in previous versions of Evernote for Mac

But that makes assumptions we don't have insight into.

Are they using a UI framework (perhaps with 3rd party components) which currently has issues/bugs on the Mac side, so that UI function is turned off until the next rev of the framework, so that they can bring that part of the UI feature back?

I dunno, but neither do you.

...I would argue that it might be preferable to design an application to cater to the user, not the other way around

Ok, but I would argue that's a utopian ideal. Especially with this large a userbase pulling in different directions, with different notions of what "correct" is.

And as monumentally difficult as it might be to create the ultimate extensible one size fits all application, nevermind support it, I'm not sure that buys customer satisfaction in any case.

Meander through: http://www.ted.com/search?q=choice

Perhaps starting with Barry Schwartz: The paradox of choice

the fact is that the tag view is not only very hard to read, but also not as powerful in displaying a tag hierarchy as the sidebar with its proper tree view.

I guess we'll have to disagree there.

I just don't see the contrast issue.

I have a hierarchical (expand/collapse) "banyan tree" view in the central (not sidebar) tag view.

Moreover, since my display is wider than it is tall, I have less scrolling when moving tags around the hierarchy. I only have to scroll 6 clicks/screens to scroll horizontally to the end of my tag list, whereas even though the font is smaller, I have to scroll 12-13 clicks to cover the tag distance vertically in the sidebar.

I had pointed out most of my concerns while Evernote 5 was still in beta stage, so the fact that they are not yet fixed a year later I think allows me to raise the issue again.

Hey no worries there. Don't let me get in your way. But the way your post read it seemed as though it fell in the camp of not knowing there was functionality to accomplish the must have feature of tag nesting, and thus the reason for downgrading. Sort of like the oft quoted stat of 80% of feature requests for MS Word were already in the product. Which raises the rabbit hole debate if that's a discover-ability issue on MS part, or an attention span issue on the user-bases part.

A weird bug I don't remember seeing mentioned: when I rotate an image, sometimes it kicks me out of a note and sends me to another one (the same one each time). There is nothing in the search field. There appears to be no consistency, either. It just happens sometimes. Did I mention this is frustrating when you have a lot of photos to rotate?

I only have to scroll 6 clicks/screens to scroll horizontally to the end of my tag list, whereas even though the font is smaller, I have to scroll 12-13 clicks to cover the tag distance vertically in the sidebar.

Actually it's even better. I hadn't expanded my tag list above.

On my internal laptop display it's 16 mouse clicks to page down to the end of the tag list in the sidebar. And 6 horizontal ones in the Tag view.

But on my 23" secondary display (16:9 aspect ratio rather than the 4:3 of the laptop), it's even better.

It's still 12 clicks to traverse vertically in the sidebar, but only 2 clicks horizontally in the Tag view.

When I collapse less often used branches, I still have two full screens of tags vertically in the sidebar, but I have ALL of them with a whole extra column of empty space for expanding branches without losing view of the current ones I'm looking at.

That sure seems like improvement for the better in my books.

hey Jack, can you guys make a small patch available for the autoscroll bug on your website etc. rather than us waiting for the next major release? Checkout the forum, there are quite a few other people also complaining how annoying this bug is. Given it has been weeks, can someone at least give us a date when this will be available? I don't mind downloading something from the site whilst we await the next major EN release since sliced bread ;)

I am having an issue taking a full screen shot using the menubar dropdown.  The screenshot contains the window from the dropdown.

I’ve reported this internally. Thanks.

Still doing it in 5.4.4.

Is there a bug tracker I can follow or something?

@cwb I concede the point that the central tag list is more space-efficient, however it has downsides: 1) I can't view a note at the same time (or at least not as easily - yes, I know I could open the note in a different window and align the windows, but that defeats the purpose, and is also not really feasible if I want to quickly navigate several notes assigned to one tag). 2) It simply can't show complex hierarchies over several levels as easily as the sidebar can. I think the attached (well, linked, this forum is not really meant for attachments) screenshot shows the difference quite well. The sidebar allows me to easily see the relationship of the tag "Kenntnis von den anspruchsbegründenden Tatsachen" to all of its parents and other forefathers quite easily, while the center view makes this information much harder to see. 3) I can't have a list of notes to the right and quickly drop them on my

Make no mistake. I am happy that Evernote works so flawlessly for you, but for me, and the way I use Evernote to structure information, Evernote 5 was a huge downgrade in usability while still not fixing my biggest annoyance in Evernote for Mac (Evernote's inability to display all tags assigned to a note). Maybe the Evernote for Mac team feels like Evernote should not be a tool for researchers who use it to categorise thousands of cases and articles in a meaningful taxonomy related to their field of research and rather want to cater to users who use a flat tag hierarchy (preferably with only one or two tags assigned to one note). If that is so, that is a decision that I have to live with, but it seems odd to me that Evernote for Windows does a much better job there then Evernote for Mac. It is like there are two competing visions about the product.

Incidentally, I found another issue. In Evernote 4 and Evernote for Windows, it was/is possible to create a tag as the child of another tag by right-clicking the expecting parent. No longer possible. Maybe there is another way to create a tag as a child immediately, but if so, it is not in the guide, it does not work the way it used to, and it is not coherent among applications. Maybe I am a lazy user, but I am also very frustrated.

Jay-Squared:

As you might guess, (in Windows) the create nested tag functionality works in the central Tag view (right click a parent), but not the sidebar.

In the Mac client, you're right there too.  It's still a drag and drop function to nest it would seem.

It does seem like an un-needed behaviour difference/oversight.
