Evernote requires latest version of iOS

Recommended Posts

I love Evernote and was looking forward to adding Evernote Food to my iPad.  Unfortunately the latest version is only supported on ios 6 and the first generation ipad doesn't support ios 6.  Would have been nice to have had it developed to support ios 5 for those of us who don't drop $500 every time Apple comes out with a new product when the one we have is still working great.  Are there any plans to support the original iPad under ios 5 or do I just need to look at other app options?

You can continue to use the version that works. Just like all software (and even hardware), the devs don't always make the newer versions compatible with "very old" OSes. Again, this is not specifc to EN. Just like iOS 6 isn't compatible with your iPad.

The old app was a piece of *****..  Just kind of hard to believe that an app dev as large as Evernote locks into "very new" os versions.  Most of the app devs that I know that develop for IOS don't develop anything requiring anything newer than 5, some even 4, in order to maintain backwards compatibility to make their app available to a wider user base.

Oh well..  Just hope they don't do that ***** to the main Evernote app..

Hi,

because of my satisfaction I still use an old EN version 4.x for iOS. I use the app daily at work since 2,5 years on my iPAD 2, where i also still have installed iOS 5.x. While a lot of users find this ununderstandable and live from update to update, I act by the simple old truth: Never change a running system. Both iOS (with a few annoyances) and EN do exactly what I want and work reliably.

When EN 5 for iOS came out, I updated - in a moment of juvenile curiosity - to V5 and was completely frustrated, till I discovered a way to go back to V4 with a few iTunes tricks. Since that moment (last autumn) I never looked back, EN just does exactly what I want, list view etc... Each time I look at the forums here or at the ratings in the iOS App Store I feel confirmed when I see how bad ratings and how many complaints new versions (like V7) of EN get.

So my question: Should I decide to upgrade my iPAD to iOS 7, will this EN version (4.x) still work with iOS 7? I have to know before, because I will most likely not be able to step back to iOS 5 after upgrading to iOS 7.

Using the old version, I also don't have to look at any ads or market sections, or "news" or whatever new is invented to entertain the masses.

I use EN almost exclusively for my work, and meanwhile have quite a large amount of information that is the base for my daily work. I think there should be a sleek and sober "Business" version of Evernote that is simple, without fancy gadgets, colourful stuff, just very effective and with a configurable GUI. I'd easily pay 10, 20 bucks for it if they made this available. 20 bucks is nothing for a tool that just works. A free app is worth nothing if it takes aways well proven features, changes a well received Gui frequently, and adds features (like market etc.) that few users want.

Thanks

Bernie

It is up to Evernote to CLEARLY identify System requirements.

This can be done easily done in the description.

Agreed.  It is not really a big deal, no harm was done.

Mostly, I'm disappointed that I can't use EN mobile.  Hard to imagine cutting off all older OS's the instant iOS 7 came out.

It's not really, though.  It's REALLY difficult to support iOS 7 and iOS 6 in the same app.  It is a LOT of extra work.  Given that more than 60% of all iOS users are now on iOS 7, that sorta speaks to the folks still on iOS 6 being tech "laggards;" they may want to still be on the older version of Evernote, too.

I could not disagree more.  First of all, how do you really know that "60%" have upgraded to iOS7????

Second, many of us, or at least me, WAIT for a while (> 2 weeks) AFTER an upgrade is released BEFORE applying the upgrade.

I don't call this "laggard".  I call this "wise", based on how often the updates of ALL software have significant, and even MAJOR BUGS.

Unless an upgrade/update fixes a MAJOR bug that you personally are experiencing, then the wise course of action, IMO, is to wait a while.

Interesting.  iTunes 11.1 for OS X doesn't say that 7 is required.

It does say iOS 7 is required. Unfortunately, due to the OSX appstore screen layout, that information is not easily found. You have to scroll down to the "Information" section where it says "requires iOS 7.0 or later."

You apparently don't read the news ;-)  Just Google it; there are many analytics companies that are noting it's something like 60% already.  Uptake has been very quick.

Here's one:  http://www.tuaw.com/2013/09/27/fiksu-ios-7-adoption-rate-at-58-percent-after-one-week/

It's OK if you want to wait.  You'll have the opportunity to wait and continue using the older version of Evernote (and in fact, many apps) during that time period as well.  Again there is a TON of additional work necessary to continue supporting iOS 6 in apps that leverage the new features and APIs in iOS 7.  Too much work, IMO, to do it just to serve folks who want to wait a few weeks to upgrade.  No sense spending multiple engineering years of work for people who are conservative, given they'll upgrade once they see there aren't sharks in the water.

I do read the news, I just don't always believe it, since most "news" today is either entertainment or marketing of some type.  ;)

IAC, it looks l like Apple has offered a good solution that allows the developer to offer multiple versions based on the iOS version:

Apple Begins Offering 'Last Compatible' Version of Apps for Users Running Legacy Versions of iOS

BTW, I don't know the stats for iOS, but Windows XP was still in use by the majority of Windows users until just a few months ago.  So clearly a lot of users don't automatically upgrade when a new OS is released.

Personally, I skipped the disaster called "Vista" and waited for Win7.

Now I've upgraded to an even better OS, Mac OS X.  :D

Well, true on Windows XP, but keep in mind that just before iOS 7 was released, about 95% of ALL iOS users were on iOS 6.  And about 4% were on iOS 5, and then 1% were on older iOS versions.  iOS is pretty "legacy free" in that there aren't things like kernel extensions, or most of the compatibility issues that plague Windows (and, to a lesser extent, OS X).

The Apple ecosystem (and iOS in particular) moves very fast.  And developers come along for the ride.  It means that developers can write much BETTER apps, because they don't have to think about how to support an OS version that's TWELVE YEARS OLD in the same app as they can work with the latest and greatest.

There are some downsides in terms of forcing users to keep current, but compared to the alternative (twelve. years. old.) they're worth it.

I think if you download the latest version of Evernote for iOS and it can't run on your device, iTunes won't sync it, right?  If you need the older version you should be able to go grab it from the device itself via the App Store.  And if for some reason that doesn't work, you can just go grab the old .ipa file from your Time Machine backup (you have a backup, right?  right?!) and restore it and sync it through iTunes  ;)

CatOne, were you here for the upgrade from iOS 5 to 6?

There were major problems with battery run-time and wi-fi.

It took two updates to fix.

The best fix for a problem is to prevent it from happening.

Waiting a few weeks after a software update is a small price to pay.

I also want to add my thanks for letting it be known that if you used the App store on your device you could get the older version of Evernote. I just bought an Ipad mini for a research trip and wanted to take my notes with me on my new device. I was upset to realize that I wouldn't be able to get it due to the new ios. And no, in reply to the discussion going here, I don't want to upgrade to 7 yet either, I have heard it is hard to see in sunlight, and want to get a good look at the new ios before I upgrade. I'm not a luddite, but neither am I tween who sees the newest sparkly things and must have it right now. Call me cautious, but when something is this radical a change, I'd rather know what I'm really getting since you can't downgrade from this new update.

As I mentioned in a different thread, iTunes does not offer an earlier version of Evernote if your mobile device is not running IOS7.  I´m trying to evaluate Evernote across all my platforms and am currently stymied on my old iPhone because the only version offered demands IOS7. I put a support request in, but no response as yet - here´s hoping!

Dropping IOS 6 support from your app one month after the release of IOS 7 is a pretty bold, if not disturbing move if you ask me.

I don't know any other company of importance that has dropped IOS 6 support by now. In fact, most of them are even backwards compatible down to IOS 5.1 up to this moment!

You are basically forcing people to upgrade or - even worse - to dump their perfectly working devices and buy a current generation iPhone/iPad.

My phone is eligible for IOS 7, but i chose not to the upgrade, because of the well known fact of limited features and performance on the iPhone 4.

Of course, you might argue, customers with IOS 6 devices are still able to use Evernote with the old app.

Now, first of all that is only true for users that had previously installed the app. Everyone else is basically out of the picture, as the App Store doesn't allow

downloading older versions.

But most importantly:

Telling your customers they can only use legacy software that will never be updated again is certainly not a smart move towards current or aspiring customers that pay a monthly fee in order to receive "Premium" service.

I intended to upgrade to Premium - until the moment Itunes told me that the decent folks at Evernote don't appreciate my phone anymore.

Now i demand some explanations. And don't tell me, that maintaining IOS 6 support is difficult - because it certainly isn't for all the other companies out there.

Not sure what you're on about in your reply. She knows how to use actual quotes, like actual writers do. Anyways, if you require actual feedback from actual Evernote employees, you should open a support request. This is a user forum and you may not get a response from an Evernote staff member here, though they read them all.

Anyhow, i am pretty sure you were referring to her being a typist, not a writer.
The difference being, that actual writers are characterized by their ability to produce meaningful content, not by just mastering linguistic syntax.

No offense though and thank you for pointing out that this a user forum in the first place. I thought that this issue was better left for open discussion than ending up as a support ticket. Particularly because its about business politics and not technical or billing issues.

I updatet and I regret it very much. Productivity has gone down. What was a great tool is now a gadget.

Can anyone tell me how to downgrade EN?

I am by no means an iTunes specialist, but with a few advices of a few guys here I was able to do the following:

In the Apple/ iTunes directory on your harddisk there might be an older version of EN that you have updated - like a backup, but I forgot where it was. I had to look for a while until I found it. Then you have to connect your iPad, go into iTunes and drag and drop the older version  onto the Apps page of your iPad. iTunes will give out a warning that you are about to replace a newer version by an older and there you go.

Since I stepped back to 4.xx I have never looked back ever since. EN 4.x simply does what it should do and doesn't step in the way. Just great!

On the other hand I have to say that I am pretty pleased by the latest version for PC. Together with the fantastic tool "Evernote clearly" I'd say productivity has gone up clearly. Very good evolution.

However I don't understand what the EN team is up to on the mobile platforms. Not my cup of tea.

Good luck.

Hi, I'm an iPod Touch 4g user and unfortunately iOS 7 is not supported on my device. I didn't realize the last evernote version was only available for iOS 7 and deleted my old version. I'd like to know what version number I should be on the look out for, that will work with iOS 6.1.2 so that I can find the old ipa and reinstall it. Was extremely sad to see you drop support for some of us like this.  :(

Apple just added support for including last-working versions for previous iOS versions because sadly older hardware doesn't work with newer iOS versions or people choose not to upgrade because it renders their phone/tablet slow, my iPhone 4 runs iOS5 and I won't upgrade to 6/7 because 6 doesn't add anything important and 7 runs really slow, evernote currently requires iOS7 to install, I can't install an older version since I didn't install evernote and keep it back in the day it worked on iOS5.

Would be nice if evernote added a version of the app that ran on iOS6 and 5, their current policy of requering iOS7 to install the evernote app excludes a lot of iOS users from using the app.

I believe you will want Evernote 5.4.3.ipa -- that's the version I have running on my iOS 6 iPad.

This is not available in the app store; how does one get it onto an iOS 6 device? When I re-initialized my iPod recently, it blew the old version of Evernote away.

Thank you! This helped me get an idea of what to look for. Couldn't find version 5.4.3 (if any of you still have it, I'd love it if you can help me get it ^^ ). I did manage to get v5.3.2 online and it seems to be working just fine for now.

I am having the same problem. Also, they do not update the BlackBerry version which has a few bugs and missing new features. Really does not make you want to pay for the premium version if they will just kill it as they please.

I did find both the older versions of Evernote listed above for iPad, I can get them into iTunes and they even load to my iPad during sync, but then fail to complete installation. My guess is that maybe it's because the username of the person who had downloaded those files from the AppStore is not my username, as I see no other differences in the info associated with these apps when compared to any of my other apps that are installed.

This problem has gone well beyond annoying. I cannot buy a new set of iPhone and iPad just to run an app, when the devices I have are just fine for everything else. Whereas the other developers seem to be able to either keep backward compatibility, or at least offer last compatible versions for older iOS in the AppStore, Evernote so far fails miserably. Well, at least I won't be upgrading to Premium anytime soon.

That tuaw link describes what Fiksu, Chitika and Mixpanel said about people who accessed apps or servers connected with them during one week.  I have stacks of apps that I might open only once a month.  Any figure that takes in what mobile operating system I am using during one week have a large chance of not finding out because I won't use that app.  Take on top of this the fact that the small number of apps owned by clients of Fiksu might be apps I don't even have installed or that only a few larger companies are likely to use Mixpanel and then it makes complete nonsense of the figure.

There is also too little data to go on here.  How do we not know that Fiksu deals with the sort of people who might wish to update their OS more often.  Perhaps the type of apps they run are only apps that people might use if they were in particular lines of business that would suggest they most likely had the most up to date hardware and software.  Likewise with the other companies.  This page details the opinions of three companies.  Why only three?  What about all the others?  There are so many people who do not make use of analytical companies to gauge there audience; there are so many companies who are not connected with Fiksu.  Do you think they would be likely to use three average companies rather than the top three if they want a spectacular sounding story?

This is all beside the point that I wished to make that I am running Evernote on iOS6 and it seems fine.  The decision to take away that ability from anyone else who wants to use iOS6 instead of 7 is pretty spiteful.  It worked.  It works.  End of.  I don't want iOS7 I do want Evernote; it should be that simple.  If it isn't then the only reason it is not is control, pure and simple.  It has nothing to do with technological capability or underlying OS as my iPhone proves.

Error when installing app: iPhone error: This App Requires iOS 7.0 or Later

I found a workaround. Apple allows for the last compatible version to be installed, but that option only appears if you already had purchased the app. So using the following steps I was able to install the app (ex. Evernote).

  1. Purchase (Download) the app in Itunes from desktop pc/mac
  2. Check your iphone, the app might now show on your screen. It will be stuck at "installing", go ahead and Delete that.
  3. Find the app on your iPhone's App Store, click Download which should now prompt to install the legacy version.

I don't want to update my iPad or iPhone to iOS V7.

The current version of Evernote for iOS available in the iTunes store is iOS v7 only. :(

Is there any way to get a version that will run on iOS6 without Jailbreaking my devices which again I don't want to do?

AFAIK, no. Apparently they have utilized things not available in previous versions of the OS, hence the requirement for iOS 7.

I know some apps let you download the last version available for an older iOS. But apparently Evernote has decided to not do that. I don't know why. Possibly b/c they have decided they don't want to support the older version any longer. I don't know.

This is awful. I have an old iPhone 3GS with iOS 6. Evernote is quite handy for me, and I don't want to upgrade my iPhone just yet (I'm waiting for the family's AT&T contracts to expire so I can jump ship for a different carrier). Now, or at least in the meantime, I'll have to look into other solutions.

Forgot to add this: One thing that really upset me was that I was presented the latest Evernote for iOS as an update in iTunes. I generally just go ahead and update everything, and because I did that, Evernote for iOS V7 was automatically downloaded, thus overwriting the earlier version. Again, it would not be such a kick in the groin if the older version were still available.

Have you tried to download it?

The app store now supports previous versions of apps for older hardware.

I just reinstalled Evernote on an old original 1st gen iPad with iOS 5, last week.

Just search for Evernote in the app store and click install.

A prompt comes up offering the older version.

I also have it on iOS6 and iOS5 on iphone 3 and 4 in the house.

You can still install it.

I only get offered the version for iOS7 on the UK app store no other version available.

Are you trying to download via iTunes or from an iOS 6 device? I don't think downloading via iTunes will work, but if you hit the store from an iOS 6 device you should be offered a version that runs on iOS 6. That's how the app store should work.

Of course I did but that only has any relevance in iTunes. And only then if you manually saved older versions.

That's not the way the App Store works.

For example if a developer pulls an app from the store and I go to install it direct from the App Store or restore my device from iCloud. I don't get that app installed just because I once bought it. I'll get an error that not all apps could be reinstalled and I should sync with iTunes (which keeps the latest synced version of an app even if it's since been removed by the developer).

Take Egretlist as an example.

Evernote bought it and then vanished it.

I can only reinstall it from iTunes now. Not the App Store.

On the point of downloading older apps, don't just go by the image I posted.

Follow the link to the article.

"In a change to its iOS App Store on Tuesday (last September), Apple is now allowing users of older hardware to download and install the last compatible version of an app supported by their legacy firmware."

Besides Evernote (as you've done) I would send a query to the UK App Store.

A less than helpful response as usual from Apple Store.

Thank you for contacting iTunes Store Customer Support. My name is Raizza and I'm glad to be your Advisor for today.

I understand that you are having trouble updating the application you purchased to your iPhone because you haven't yet upgraded to the latest version of iOS. As a customer myself, I know how important it is to you to have this issue quickly addressed. I'm happy to be of assistance.

Colin, most of the items being offered on the store are usually optimized for the latest operating system that Apple is releasing. This is the reason why the the app requires iOS 7.0 or later, to make it compatible with the items that its going to give away. I sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this issue may cause.

Apple recognizes that no one is better qualified to provide feedback about iTunes than the people who use it. I encourage you to use the iTunes Feedback page to submit your comments:

roghur-

Your solution worked perfectly on my older Ipod Touch. As you said, I downloaded Evernote to my PC through ITunes. Then I went to my Ipod "updates" and found the app. Just as you said, when I clicked Install it asked if I wanted to install an older compatible version.  I said, yes, and it did it!!!  Your solution ought to be elevated to the top of the heap in a Chrome search. Thanks for this easy, elegant solution.

Ugg. I'll say. He's reading from a script that is vastly outdated.

Maybe remind him of the app store changes, forward the image, so he realizes he's out of his depth and escalates it.

The specific question for him to answer is why are the latest versions compatible with iOS6 not being offered in the UK App Store when they are in the US/Canadian App Store.

Actually I had an iphone 4 with OS 5.1 in a hardware pile here.

I set it up as a new device and added my Apple ID to the store account settings.

This phone has never had Evernote and wasn't synced to iTunes.  This is a direct app store download.

Same result as I'd posted before (Canadian App store).

Installed version is Evernote 5.4.3

Versus version Evernote 7.3.0 on my iphone 5s

So what we really need is a longer term Evernote user from the US or UK to pipe in who still has a pre-iOS7 device and can chime in if they can still download.

If so it would contradict Apple's statement of how the store works, and would un-logically block someone who bought an older second hand iOS device from installing any software on it that the previous owner hadn't before wiping it.  Which just wouldn't make sense.

I have access to the US and UK stores only so it looks like the Canadian store may be different. Also whilst the device may never have had it before you have and that may be why it was offered.

Using iTunes on your computer, download the current version of Evernote for iOS. Then, when you try to download it on your iOS device, it will register as previously purchased and you should be given the option to download the older version.

Megsaint you are a star. That suggestion works perfectly. :D I now have a compatible version on my iPad and iPhone.

I think Apple has gotten much worse over the years.  And now that this new, even more terrible version (ios7) is out there, it's making it impossible to try to enjoy the iPhone.  I am not one of those suckers who is going to drop a stupid amount of money for the same exact product just with a new color or home button.  It is a waste of time, effort, and money to even think about "upgrading" to that.

What I am trying to get at is that Evernote is actually a great app.  It's a shame to see that it only downloads to ios7 iPhones.  It would be great if you guys updated (or downgraded depending on how you look at things) to ios5 so more people can support you and your app.  There are a lot of people out there other than me that think ios7 is a terrible thing too and would like to see ios5 linger on a little longer.

Hopefully you guys will take this into consideration and make it available for ios5.  You will get a lot more support that way.

So continuing with Evernote will cost several hundred dollars. I use a 3-year-old iPod Touch, and the data cable plug is mounted in my car properly, so upgrading will be expensive. I use only a subset of Evernote features, so Google Drive and/or Google Keep will probably be sufficient for me. Anyone else migrated in that direction?

Fortunately, as far as I know, the Evernote app in older operating systems will continue to operate. You simply won't be able to upgrade to newer versions as they become available. That's all. Of course, you also can't enjoy new stuff from Apple or a host of other app makers.

I think it is fairly standard practice to drop support for older devices and operating systems (I don't know of a major developer that doesn't), especially when radical changes are made such as the ones that were needed for ios7. Unfortunately, this is essentially planned obsolescence, and it does mean hardware upgrades will be needed. This means customers like you and I are regularly faced with expensive and seemingly unnecessary expenses (Apple's lightning plug comes to mind). These are not unforeseen expenses, though, and are actually a part of how the tech world seems to operate (in my experience) whether we like it or not.

Personally, I think this is a fair and reasonable decision by Evernote and as a customer who regularly upgrades hardware as a cost of working in an increasingly technology-driven world, I'd rather have Evernote devoting its resources toward innovations that take advantage of new hardware than supporting legacy hardware. There is a pretty healthy market for used devises out there, and you may find selling an old devise to subsidize the cost of a new (or newer used) one mitigates the cost.

Hi. Sorry to hear about the problem. I recommend restoring from your backup. New versions of Evernote only work with iOS 7.

Thanks very much indeed, roghur - worked fine for me too, and meant that I didn't have to abandon Evernote before I'd even got started!

In my phone's settings for iTunes and App Stores, I had to turn on Automatic Downloads/Apps.  Once this was done, went to updates and, as imcezu said, was offered the option to download a compatible version.

A pity Evernote doesn't offer the option on detecting an older iOS version, but your solution did the trick - much appreciated!
