(Archived) (potential) bug: Resizing the sidebar is overly difficult

One of the reasons I find Evernote's lack of ability to remember my sidebar resizing so frustrating is that it is so incredibly difficult to actually resize the sidebar.

The active area that allows you to resize it seems to be way smaller than the mouse pointer leads you to believe. Thus, the user inadvertently applies tags to notes or just achieves nothing at all. I have linked to a screencast of me trying to resize the sidebar. I was not intentionally slow, it actually took me almost a minute to resize the sidebar.

It might be that I am the only experiencing this issue, but I tend not to have this problem in other applications.

LOL. That was painful to watch. It's how I imagine Andy Warhol trying to use a mouse with Steve Jobs at his side trying to tell him how to work the thing!

To be honest, I have never thought this was a problem, but now that you mention it, I can definitely see why it would be an issue. Thanks for raising it :) I can't think of an app offhand that does this kind of thing (resizing a section of the screen) really well. Do you have any in mind? I will say that OSX isn't terribly forgiving in Finder or other places either, so this may be an Apple thing...

Actually, before posting, I tried resizing the sidebar in iTunes

and the oft-referenced (at least by me) Bibdesk

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/366500/screencast_bibdesk.mov

Notice how in Bibdesk, I am intentionally clicking next to the line delimiting the sidebar, and yet resizing still works wherever the pointer indicates it should be possible.

Both applications were much more pleasant experiences in the resizing department compared to Evernote.

Thanks for posting those. I have been playing with it more, trying to achieve that inoperability, and I think I have stumbled upon it. I have no explanation for it, but perhaps it has to do with how the scroll is activated. Once that comes on, things get clumsy, and as you said, even when it shows it is ready to resize, it doesn't work. At one point, it was so bad I tried several times without any success, just like you were showing in the video. So, it does look (to me) like there is more work to be done there. I don't resize much, and when I do, I use the bottom part of the screen (ads showing), so there is no slider. Maybe that is why I never noticed it before. Or, I am just un-observant :)

I don't think it is a "Apple thing". I think it is an "Evernote thing":

  1. I don't have this problem in the Mac Finder, or in any other apps
  2. I don't have this problem in EN Mac between the Snippet view and the Note contents panes
  3. It ONLY occurs trying to resize the Left Panel (NB, Tags, etc) and the Snippet view
