Reducing picture sizes !!

Hi everyone,

I know that this has been discussed before, but not being able to reduce the photo size on Evernote is seriously making me second guess my departments use of the program.

Having to use a third party app or reduce sizes on a computer goes a bit against the grain of why I purchased Evernote to begin with.

Evernote- I know that this has been a topic of discussion for a while, but is anyone working out this kink and/or upgrading the program to allow for the control of picure sizes on the app and/or before sending a note via email?

Hi and welcome to the Forum. How are you acquiring the pictures that are oversize? Through a mobile camera? Through web clipper? Evernote doesn't (and can't) control the size of images you copy from the web - that's imposed by the file being downloaded to your note. My camera app - popped up by Evernote's picture note button - gives me a choice of camera definitions to choose which (obviously) affects the size of picture taken. When do you imagine Evernote should offer to resize pictures?

Gaz, you must not be using the iPhone.

This is an old, well-known issue for EN iPhone. It does NOT provide any options when creating a snapshot note.

As a result it always stores the image in max resolution, which requires many MB of space.

Most of the time we only need a low-med resolution, which would take on a few KB.

Every other iPhone app I have used that uses the camera offers a choice in resolution when you save the snapshot.

Yup; know about the iPhone. Not sure whether the OP is handicapped by his hardware (and not posting in the right forum) or just unaware that resolution can be dialled down (on some OS's)...

Is the issue really the size of the photograph, or just that Evernote doesn't allow the display of a thumbnail of the photo? - the thumbnail size being a user choice at time of creation - ie choose size of the photo to display but keep the photo's original resolution.

Given the rather large size of photographs taken with modern cameras, smartphones and even the new iPad, it is very disappointing that Evernote has still not addressed this issue.

Personally I don't believe Evernote should get involved in photo manipulation directly. What would be much better is some sort of integration with other photo apps like Photoshop (PS Express), etc. Export to photo app, manipulate, save back to Evernote.

Evernote displays thumbnails for documents and pdf files, so why not photos?

Evernote also integrates with applications such as QuickOffice which can edit an attached document and then save it back into the Evernote, so this sort of integration is possible.

It seems to me that just a little will is needed from Evernote to do this - and perhaps it needs more of us to shout loudly!

I see I'm not the only one who would like to resize images. In my case I want to be able to paste an image found online, and resize it for optimal viewing - which will be different for each image/my need of it. At present I'm copying it into Word, resizing it, then copying the new image into Evernote - and would love to be able to just drag the corners of my image to resize it right in my note's window.

I would also value the ability to have a thumbnail view for pictures, the main reason for subscribing to the premium package was to store and access pictures, i have been able to resize existing pictures within a note by dragging the corners but this only seems to work in IE, i have tried this with chrome, desktop and android apps but this doesnt work. Obviously doing this for every picture takes a lot of time and hassle swithcing from desktop to IE and editing each one at a time.

Without this i am wondering if the premium package is worthwhile as i typically only use ~2% of the monthly usage limit!! Having the ability to view thumbnails without loading the whole fiel woudl make my user experience so much better, this feature alone would keep my subscription at the premium level.

And you can't carry out much editing on a picture in Evernote, while you can in some of the more specialised alternatives like Picasa. I have some photos and slides in Evernote, but always for reasons to do with the content, not just for storage. My main store is Picasa (Google and free) with some in Flickr (free up to a point) and DropBox.

I am in the process of digitising a lot of slides and prints (5000 or so) which will go straight into Picasa as full-res images, but I'm keeping the indexes and storage details in Evernote so I can find the originals when I need to, and I'll have direct links in some cases to the original file.

If you're dealing with just pictures taken on a phone you could consider maybe using Dropbox for the storage and linking to the original via Evernote?

Hi, one of the things i love about Evernote is the ability to add all types of content to a note, in order to do this it is about giving the user the flexibility to lay things out in a nice way, as things stand the inability to display certain file types as thumbnails can make the note untidy if the picture is high resolution.

Evernote was always positioned as a way of managing content, to me this would include photos, i don't need fancy photo editing but would like to be able to display them in a way that fits with what i am wanting to capture, be that a "multi-format" note or small collection of pictures.

Perhaps i am wandering off topic here but thinking about storage capacity i think that if one signs up for a premium package then the ability to use that storage however i want should be made as user friendly as possible (like every other aspect of Evernote). Perhaps there is an opportunity in the future for Evernote to offer packages that would allow users to select storage package that fit their needs a bit closer?

I have just shared my first notebook (work related screenshots of software UI) - then read about needing to upgrade to allow modify - so i did. All good.

Then clicked 'gift' to see what it was - promotion about 'sharing the gift of memory'.

Which lead me to try a journal in evernote - plugged in iphone and dragged and dropped 4 images from a bbq tonight to a new note within 'Journal' notebook.

My very first action within paid evernote - was to right click these images and make sure they werent too big (knowing evernote has a limit) (and knowing iphone images are big)

I use dropbox for everything else - but though creating a personal blog/journal would be good.

It would be great if evernote recognised you were importing images - and prompted you what size you'd like them brought in as.

I'm well aware i could manually process the images b4 dragging and droping - but that would reduce the spontenaiety..

Haven't looked into it, but I'd imagine there's image editing software out there that will generate a thumbnail from a full-res picture (and some thumbnails will have optional sizes) so it may be possible to store your pictures somewhere that will automagically generate a smaller version to be saved to Evernote.

Given that different priorities are involved in journalling an event with pics, and storing all the full-size best quality original images with a brief subject or title, such an add-on maybe using flickr or picassa would be rather popular. If that doesn't exist already, maybe there's an app developer out there looking for a new project?

The evernote food app (I use on iphone) allows you to choose your resolution. Not sure why the default app doesn't. The big drawback of evernote food is that you can't edit your notes from the web or on the mac app, only on the iphone app.

I am not sure if I have understood properly what some of the previous posts are looking for by way of reducing picture sizes but the following might help.

I use a Samsung Galaxy Note and there is a way to control the size in megapixels of the photos taken when using the camera in Evernote.

When I tap the camera icon in a note that I am editing, the camera opens. I tap on the menu key on the bottom left of the handset to bring up the Edit Shortcuts option. Tapping on this brings up the shortcuts grid. On my Galaxy Note by default there are five shortcuts at the top of the screen. Hold down and drag one of these off the top and drop it into the grid. Drop back in the spare shortcut square, the resolution shortcut (usually shows 8MP). Now when you tap on this a dialog opens allowing you to choose a range of resolutions (8MP, 6.5MP, 3.2MP, 2.4MP and 0.4MP).

This provides a way of setting the photo size in megapixels, prior to taking the photo.

TheViking: on the iPhone EN app, there is no option to reduce the size of a capture image so every photo is captured at full resolution and thus consuming Inez's monthly upload. In most cases, I don't need a full res image and would rather a simple low res snapshot. As midget points out, the EN Food app does offer a setting to control the resolution of the image captured. We are only looking for the same functionality in the EN app.

With any luck, the next version of the app will allow the user to control the resolution!

I had reviewed many productivity programs/apps for several months before I've decided to go for Evernote. I have been using it for about a week and I am overall very pleased with this product.

However.. the image resolution issue serviced. I and the environment I work in is very visual and when I dragged and drop or select photos from my library, Evernote did not prompt to offer an resolution alternative i.e. thumbnail I was quite disappointed.

I enjoy the program as helps me compile my thoughts in one place but I am not looking for duplicates of existing content, but for quick views, thumbnails, links etc to the originals.

I was ready to subscribe for the year, but not until I see Evernote can do what many other apps, desktop programs etc do now instinctively in regard to image content.

I've found the easiest solution for the iPhone is to use the native camera app and email the photos to my Evernote Upload address. When you email a photo the iPhone gives you the option of sending the photo in smaller sizes. From the photo album you can select multiple photos to send in a single email. It's an extra step (you have to sync before the photos show up in Evernote), but it's fast, simple, and I don't have to fuss with the photo once it's in a note.

For me, I find the word wrap issue is more of a problem than image resizing. Image resizing would be nice, but I have lots of other programs that can do that before I put the image into Evernote. But it would be nice to be able to have words around the pictures instead of a small picture taking up the whole block.

No, we fully understand what people are saying. HOWEVER...Gazumped & the rest of us (that don't have "Evernote Employee" by their avatar) are users just like yourself. And users don't have access to Evernote's roadmap or ETAs, since they do not publish them. SO...the best we can do is offer workarounds/alternatives to help people do what they want to do. If you elect to not use those suggestions, that's your choice. (shrug)

I know this topic a over a month old, just wondering if anyone has found the optimal solution? I think why people are confused about the photo storage options, is they aren't trying to store photos, thus it doesn't seem related. I imagine the most common scenario is they are trying to add a picture for sharing or to compliment the information in the note, etc. So whatever the method of adding that picture (directly form camera, from gallery, shared from another app, etc.) they would like a simple option to pop-up where they can quickly decide (small, medium, large, full-res). If you upload 2 full res pictures, and you share that notebook with a non-paying member, it could easily be over their monthly data cap to do anything with those pictures requiring an 'upload' form their side.

I would love to hear what others are doing to get as close to this as possible.

Here's what I do. All my pictures get automatically synced to my home desktop PC (use whatever option you would like here). Then that folder gets batch re-sized to optimal viewing size, and then re-synced to a separate folder on my device. So I will always have a mirror folder of all my pictures in a compressed, easily share-able size, and I don't kill my friends data caps.

There is a little setup time for this, and they are not available instantly, but if I do need it instantly...I will just take that photo at low res (If I will never need a hi-res copy), or manually compress it with any old photo app on device.

What's everyone else doing these days?

But I ran into the same concern today using IPHONE and not being able to send multiple image note to colleagues. So I went to settings in Evernote, then in settings had to also hit the username tab upper left of the main settings page.

then I get a photo size option for evernote to convert all photos taken or attached by the option you select

small to original, everything in between.

I don't know what everyone is using, but here's what I do.

I use an iPad, and have a Mac. I use EN's program Skitch to take photos of items I want to insert into an EN. Then I edit that photo in Skitch to crop it down to only what I need. Then I just copy/paste that Skitch photo into an EN note (or you could simply "move" the note to the notebook of your choice via the desktop app). Skitch stores your photos in a special EN book, if you allow it to, so you're really not creating a lot of additional work for yourself, and you don't need to take extra steps to get the photo into your EN app.

Now, that all being said, I'm not sure if the resolution the iPad takes is lesser than however else these photos are being taken. I also have never seen an option to set resolution of the photos the iPad takes - but they are not DSL quality, so it cannot be large.

I am not sure EN should offer this feature of resizing, etc. when they already have an app that edits (to a certain extent) and utilizes the EN app - and if you want anything more powerful than that, there are plenty of apps out there to do so. EN isn't an image-centric app, it is an app to keep you organized.

(Side note: Unless things have changed since the last time I was on a Window's OS unit, simply 'dragging the corners' doesn't reduce the size of the original image file, but it does affect how it appears in the document. In other words, the link is still to a large file, so it still has to access the large file before it sizes it. It may appear small, but it still takes up the same amount of file space. I don't think this is the best way to reduce file size. )

Right now this is my biggest (only?) gripe about EN. Here's how my workflow is right now. With my Android phone (or tablet) I use the Evernote widget to take a quick photo and save it as a note. Note: I *DO* have the capability of reducing the size of the photo taken. I'll return to that.

Android: If I open it in the Android Evernote app on either my tablet or phone, the photo is scaled down to the height or width of the screen - whichever makes the entire photo appear on screen - for easy viewing. No need to scroll. It even allows pinch zooming.

Web: If I open the note here the image is scaled ONLY to the width of the window. Scrolling may be required for a tall photo, unless you compress the window horizontally so the photo is scaled smaller.

Windows: Acts exactly the same as the Web version, with one difference for me. I use the Windows application in List view. In 1080p. This means if there's a photo in a note, it takes of 85% of the screen horizontally, but around 40% vertically. So I get a nice detailed view of the top 1/8th of a photo. I usually can't even tell what I'm looking at. I'm forced to double click the note in the list view to open a new window, then resize the window horizontally to view the photo instead of just skipping through the list real quick to find what I am looking for.

Yes, I have the capability to reduce the image size, but I may want a nice detailed photo, I just want to be able to see the entire image before getting detail.

Consider this a feature request for the Windows client to act the same as the Android client. Ideally, we would have the option to change the default view amongst all clients. Options: Scale to fit image, scale to fit height, scale to fit width, do not scale. I am NOT asking for image editing capabilities. I want the images I upload to be stored exactly as they are, the client just needs to be able to adapt to different images. I know they are working on standardizing the EN clients, but there's no reason for such disparity in basic functionality.

Nope,  sorry - I'm an android user,  so have more control over the size of my pictures.  Anything I save to Evernote is record-keeping at low-res;  anything "artistic" I want to keep I take at full res on the camera or my phone and save to Picassa. 

 

Picassa (Google,  but free) can export one or more pictures at whatever size and quality you want,  and will also show you their location on disk,  but it would take some effort to build that into an Evernote database of thumbnails pointing at the original files.  In isolated cases I have exported low-res pics to share with others,  but as I said before;  for storage see Picassa,  Flickr and any number of clones thereof.  For sharing,  see my answer above.  Evernote is great at lots of stuff,  but you can't use it for everything...

I read somewhere that EverNotes is about making life easier.  Well, EverNotes, if you want to make my life easier you will let me include a photo in my notes that I can size.  All I want to do is grab the corner and squeeze it to a smaller size so I can actually see the whole image at once.  Having to use all these work-arounds described in this forum would make my life harder.  I don't want a "process" for adding a photo. 

 

Think about it.  Notes are snippets of information that you want to access later.  Often this is a picture of a place, a product, a person.  We don't need Picassa and to tell us that is what we should use means someone isn't listening.  A picture is just a kind of information captured at a moment in time and added to text.  Pictures speak a thousand words.  To not be able to effectively use pictures in EverNotes is an extreme limitation !! 

 

I am a Premium user but I have not fully committed to EverNotes yet and one major reason is this limitation.  It would be nice to know if it is in the product roadmap.

If you read the forums,  you will have gathered that Evernote don't share their roadmap... but they do improve their features over time so its a fairly safe bet that a better notes editor is on the cards...

Off topic, but I can highly recommend postach.io for blogging straight out of Evernote. I've just set it up myself and am very pleased with the end result. Supports comments and Google Analytics.

 

I use a great program for Windows to resize pics - Paint.net. Fiddly to download, but free - it's a poor man's photoshop, and very good for adjusting levels as well.

I am writing in August 2013 and this is clearly still an issue.  I use Android and Windows and am considering using EN for our real estate business. The whole reason I like EN is that I can take photos in the same note as I'm using to note information about the apartment.  The photos are so huge, though, that it is proving to be impractical. I might as well use Word and a regular camera.

 

Does EN plan to address this issue?  All you need is an option that lets you take the picture in EN at a mid-low resolution without messing with your camera settings or using another app.

This is a user forum, so it's difficult to say whether Evernote will ever change this. Even when Evernote staff do post, it's very very rare that they will confirm a change or addition of functionality and even less likely that they will put a timescale on it.

 

I'd suggest if this is something you need right now, then Evernote isn't the application for you.

What a GREAT idea!  I'll try it.  Maybe there's a developer out there who wants to create an Evernote real estate app.  I wish I knew how to do it myself.

For image resizing,i'd like to use RasterEdge web viewer zooming section.We can easily zoom in and out image and document and adjust image to the best viewer size.The supported image formats are: JPEG, PNG, TIFF, BMP & GIF; the supported document formats are: PDF, PDF/A, Word, DICOM, etc.

For me everything is fine (using iPhone) until I send a note as an email.  The pictures are so big that you have to scroll to see the whole picture(using computer, not another smart phone).  Is there a way to make the picture fit or make it smaller so you can see the whole picture in the email without scrolling?

There are apps that will resize pictures - see above for one;  sadly at this time Evernote doesn't do that - although I'm sure they've taken due note of the requests for the feature.

On Android I use an App called "Reduce Photo Size" it can set the pic format to whatever type you want and also post it as a new note to Evernote

A bit late, maybe, but I'd like to add that there are 2 distinct requirements to address:

1. Some people ask for having a way to import images with smaller size 

2. Some people ask to be able to DISPLAY images smaller in the notes, but keeping the original size.

 

Requirement 2. is my case:

I'd like to keep the original size and resolution of the images, but also to make it appear smaller in the note (as I can do in any MS Word doc) by dragging the edge or the corner of the image with the mouse for example.

One could even have the text going around it as somebody else proposed.

With a double click the full resolution image could pop up (it's important if you include high res scientific plots, and you want to look at the details), but otherwise the note could appear small and leave most of the space for the rest of the note.

I too am having the same type problem.  The reason I would like smaller photos is for synching purposes.  I took some pictures for work in EN yesterday and synced them to edit them on my Mac.  After that I planned on sending as an email to my boss.  I quickly learned that the majority of my monthly limit was used up with just a few pictures.  

 

I realize up grading to premium would give me more space to sync with but even at that, I still don't think each picture I take with the EN camera option should be 2+Mb per picture.  I have read through this entire thread and realize there are work arounds for this and work arounds like that, I like using EN because I don't like the idea of "work arounds"  If I wanted that I would just take notes and pictures in my email and send them to myself.

Picture size management is surely needed. My workaround is to email the pics from my phone or tablet to my Evernote email account. It lets me choose the size to send, and I choose medium. It seems to fit well on web pages and into emails.

 

I yearn for greater control, and would like to just grab the corner to reduce a picture size. And just because, would really like word-wrap as well. Formatting is important, especially if you publish your Evernote notes on a blog like postach.io.

One work-around that I use is to EMAIL the photo from iPhoto to my Evernote account.  iPhoto will allow you to choose image size before sending the email.

 

But I agree that it would be VERY HELPFUL if Evernote would support just some simple, basic image manipulations, like resize and rotate.

 

Most of us are NOT asking for a "photo editor" feature like Photoshop, or anything even close.  Just a FEW basic tools.

There are many software's that are available on free for reducing picture sizes. One very commonly that I use is shrinkpictures.com you can also try it by yourself. Also, if you need some one professional to do such kind of job then contact Isabella, I have found her profile on website while looking for some professional for photo restoration process. I have a pic of my Father and it is almost 34 years old image, it is too much blur even can't see it clearly. So, I have contacted her nd she is really good.

There should be some kind of thumbnail feature in the Desktop Version. Just like in the mobile app. The pictures are displayed way to big.

A bit late, maybe, but I'd like to add that there are 2 distinct requirements to address:

1. Some people ask for having a way to import images with smaller size 

2. Some people ask to be able to DISPLAY images smaller in the notes, but keeping the original size.

 

Requirement 2. is my case:

I'd like to keep the original size and resolution of the images, but also to make it appear smaller in the note (as I can do in any MS Word doc) by dragging the edge or the corner of the image with the mouse for example.

One could even have the text going around it as somebody else proposed.

With a double click the full resolution image could pop up (it's important if you include high res scientific plots, and you want to look at the details), but otherwise the note could appear small and leave most of the space for the rest of the note.

 

Same for me. I do not want to modify the actual image size. I know I can shrink the image using some external software, but this would be a "lossy" procedure that downgrades the image.

I just want to adjust the size of the image as shown in Evernote. I found that right-clicking on a PDF image in the note on a Mac gives you the option to zoom-in and zoom-out, which helps a lot. However, I would like to change the default behaviour. The current one is: make the image as big as the the Evernote window, which is clearly not useful as in many cases one is dealing with small images or PDF files, like equations from LatexIt, pieces of text, signatures or small images. The default behaviour should be similar to that of Powerpoint: when pasting/dragging an image in Evernote, the program should use the actual size of the image. If that is larger than the screen size, shrink it to fit the screen, but otherwise leave it as it is.

Seems like this discussion has been going on for a while. Just wanted to chime in with some feedback form my work team.

 

We have some staff working in the US and some staff in Asia. The latter, sometimes with pretty slow internet connection (Which is the biggest headache with the full size images).

We all happen to use iPhones for our primary note taking and then later review on laptops.

For our intended purposes a "medium" size image would be sufficient to get the point across. Currently the workaround is the Email the photo to ourselves as select "medium resolutions" then, use the new image file.

This is a cumbersome and inefficient process.

 

It would be really cool if the EN app had one or both of the following options:

1. When a user takes a photo, before importing it into the note, ask the user what resolution they want (same as when sending an Email from iPhone)

2. When a user imports a photo from an album, before importing it into the note, ask the user what resolution they want (same as when sending an Email from iPhone)

In the iPhone Mail App - if you try to Email multiple images at once, it only asks you the question once and applies the answer to all images in that Email. That seems to be great logic for that process.

 

Evernote staff, what do you say? Is this an improvement you can make?

For the less sophisticated (me), When the image is way out of whack, I open with Paint and use the Resize button.  Memories of Windows 2 or something like that.

Resizing on an external tool is OK if you don't mind losing image quality. The ENML method stores the image at full resolution whilst displaying a smaller representation of the image. You can then still copy and paste the full resolution image elsewhere.

I am OK with any loss of image quality in this case, especially since I am always shrinking the image, by a factor of 4 some times. And none of the images I have in EN are used to reproduce a copy. (Serial number plates, handwritten notes, wine bottles, etc.). Would be nicer to have it all within EN though.

I can't find any comment on this thread from Evernote staff and it is clearly an issue that needs addressing; I want to add my vote for evernote to make it possible to resize a photo in a note. The work-arounds described above are annoying if you are busy and want to add something quickly. Please could an Evernote person tell us whether you are taking this plea seriously? Thank you.

That problem is fixed on the iOS app. Not sure what you are using but if it's an iPhone go settings>general>camera>image size

My iPhone 5S with the latest iOS does not let me change the image size under settings, but if I understand this suggestion it is to take lower resolution photos, rather than being able to adjust the dimensions of the photo in EverNote.   I think we are all hoping for the simple ability to edit the photo dimensions in an EverNote document.  

 

Thanks for the tip, but I hope EverNote product management does not think this let's them off the hook for this needed enhancement.

Not sure it will work in your case, but others seem to get better control when they create a 1x1 table in a note into which the image is pasted.  Then drag the right edge to get the size you want.  FWIW.

Yea - That works for *****, notes are very difficult to read (and the is being nice).

I found if you use the browser version of evernote there is an Chrome add-on called AfterNote that does let you set the size that an image is displayed. Since the Evernote documents are actually HTML, it work great.
