(Archived) What do YOU have in Evernote?

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone, :)

Just wanted to get some ideas of what you all have in Evernote.

I'm spending so much time organizing now, and it seems I have many, many more things I can do (probably 98%+ more things!). I know I'm missing a lot of things - just from my few posts recently I learned a lot more than I had thought on my own from all your replies, so thank you!

So basically I wanted to share and start a thread (sorry if there's one already there somewhere!) sharing what we have in Evernote (whether it's a copy in Evernote OR Evernote has the only copy) and what can be put into Evernote:

  1. Thoughts of the moment
  2. Blog post ideas
  3. Goals and plans
  4. Tasks and todos (like checklist OR things to delete/ignore once done)
  5. Business cards scans
  6. Magazine scans
  7. Pdf files
  8. eBooks (pdf OR the scary .mobi/.ebook format)
  9. Legal documents (scanned or direct)
  10. Paper Bills (bills you've already saved)
  11. Audio thoughts (audio you recorded to save)
  12. Serial keys (like Steam Game card keys or keys inside dvd boxes)
  13. Your resumes/CV
  14. Insurance info - Life insurance, health insurance, etc
  15. Death will, death wish, instructions to someone after you die, etc.
  16. Photos (something I have not tried yet, as I'm trying to figure out the logistics of this)
  17. Coupon scans for reference OR actual use (this is tricky, as even with 2011 ending, the number of stores accepting coupons on your phone is nothing compared to stores accepting paper coupons)
  18. Pay stubs
  19. Tax documents
  20. Work documents (w4, legal, important emails)
  21. Applications (resumes/CV you've sent to companies, universities you've applied to, membership groups you've applied to, etc)
  22. Travel Documents (passport copy, visa copy, etc)
  23. Travel tickets
  24. Ticket stubs (movies, concerts, events - I love movies, and am thinking a lot about whether to Evernote all my movie stubs, OR to keep them physically)
  25. Letters (yes, all your paper letters saved into Evernote)
  26. Photo of the moment (Noticed the "nd" in the "Wendy's" sign not lit up at night? Saw a Starbucks employee in Starbucks uniform drinking Peete's coffee? Evernote away!)
  27. Emails (copies) (This opens up a WHOLE new dimension and deserves its own thread - coming soon!)
  28. Chat logs (Gtalk, Skype, Live Messenger, Yahoo - again, a whole new dimension/area and more details coming soon in a separate thread)
  29. Personal/Daily Journal (the BEST personal journal in my view)
  30. Scripts, Manuscripts and more
  31. Microsoft Office documents (all those doc, ppt, xls and other files created/collected over the years)
  32. Text files
  33. Music backups (again, like photos, I'm thinking of how this will work OR if it's necessary at all - Crashplan OR Importing Folders may be better?)
  34. Holiday shopping info (links, things to buy, prices, etc)

Could you please share the things you put in Evernote and what you think is possible with Evernote? It will really help me in realizing the possibilities even more.

I'll update this original post with anything you all share to list everything possible. Thanks so much!

Regards,

Bes

Perhaps it might be better to say what I don't have in Evernote. I can't think of anything at the moment :)

Web clippings of local, state, national and international political events from sites I trust.

Feature requests, cigars, gifts, projects, and receipts. A bunch of randomness too, that hasn't taken any form or shape, yet.

Oh yeah! That reminds me. Almost forgot. Feature requests for a Due Date column. :)

I have much of what OP has. However, I don't add (most of my) photos, my ebooks or music to Evernote. I still use a more "traditional" cloud backup for that. (Amazon S3 servers via Jungle Disk.)

I design & make greeting cards (hobbyist, not pro) so I keep notes about card ideas as well as the images used and fonts used. I add most of the fonts to Evernote along with an image of a sample. Makes it easy, if I need to install the font on a new computer. It's a bit disconcerting when you migrate to a new computer, install your card software & files & then load in an existing card, only to get a defaulted font b/c the original isn't installed! When this happens from now on, I'll know exactly what font to install to print another copy of that card.

When I see Youtube videos I like, I download them (copyright issues aside...) If they are small enough, I put them in Evernote. If they are too big for EN, I will create an Evernote note with the location on my hard drive. So twenty years from now, if anyone wants to see that video of Tucker the white frou dog playing piano & singing a torch song & you can't find it on Youtube anymore, hit me up. :)

I use a Livescribe pen for important meetings and/or taking my elderly mom to the doc. If the audio files fit, I add them to Evernote along with a screen cap of the handwritten notes. When doing playback, I still prefer the LS desktop app. But I like the redundancy of having the files in Evernote, too.

The thing about scanning & saving letters/cards to Evernote is that I can still "keep" them without having the clutter of them. Admittedly, I do keep a few originals. But for the most part, I scan & put into Evernote & then toss. The nifty thing about EN is that I end up reading the notes more often than when I retained the hard copy b/c I don't have to dig the hard copy out!!!

I also keep photos from Zillow & Sawbuck. I love looking at homes & deco ideas. These two sites (as well as others, I'm sure) have the photos of a home, when it's on the market. If there's a nifty home in my area, I'll put the photos in EN so I can "remember" what it looks like inside as well as any views it has. Or if I see deco ideas I like, I'll add those to EN.

I keep track of dining coupons. Not grocery. But lunch/dinner coupons & their expiration dates. That way, if we decide we want to go out, I can quickly look in EN to see what coupons I have.

I used to keep an Access database of the various tv shows/movies we had on VHS/DVD. I'm now migrating that to Evernote.

I keep track of things I donated or threw away. This is especially helpful since we moved a few months ago. If I'm looking for the stainless steel thermos & can't find it, I can (hopefully) look through the notes tagged with "things I donated or threw away" & see if I got rid of it.

I also have a "where I put things" tag...again especially helpful since we moved. I can easily/visually see where I put my grandmother's wine glasses. (They are stowed away, since there's not enough room in the kitchen/dining area & we don't use them often.)

Also...I have a "where to get things" tag. IE, I love canned chipotle. You can't always get it everywhere. So I make a note of the stores that have it.

Or...sometimes a store you frequent has something in an odd location - I add that to Evernote. IE, Smart & Final (a mini Costco) has only the big containers of salsa in the salsa/Mexican aisle. HOWEVER...if you go to the other side of the store & go to the display at the end of the cracker/chips aisle, they have regular sized jars of salsa... A few times I struggled with this...I knew they had regular sized jars of salsa but couldn't find it. I finally added a phone camera image to EN & now, I remember!

I scan the Starbucks "pick of the week" cards I get. Just for fun. :)

Contact lens prescription.

Songs I want to buy. Books I want to buy/read.

Our dogs are chipped. I have their chip info in Evernote.

Screen caps of things on Ebay that I'm interested in (but don't buy) or things I hope to buy.

I maintain a hobbyist website & keep notes about things I want to add to it. Or how to do something (with the various tools I use for the website such as css/Dreamweaver/Swishmax/etc.)

Genealogy info.

Handyman tasks. I'm not "handy" nor is Mr. Fries. So I keep a list of things for the handyman to do when we call him.

If I see something in a catalog that I think I (or someone I know) may want that, I scan the page & put it in EN & then toss the catalog.

Coffees, K cups (for you Keurig owners out there) and teas that I've tried. This will hopefully prevent me from ever buying Watermelon black tea from Harry & David ever again.

My family's drugs. (I also keep this in Dropbox, since DB seems faster, when you're at the ER/hospital/doc's.)

Brands/shades/colors of my favorite cosmetics.

Battery sizes/filter sizes for things like washer/dryer/ceiling fans/refrigerator/air conditioning/etc.

Manuals/warranties.

When traveling, I take a photo of our room number. Then if I forget...

I "found" my father's other two daughters on Facebook a couple of years ago. A lot of exchanging of information the first year. I use EN to keep track of each sister & their families & lives as well as what I'd emailed to each sister.

Hmm not much to add.

The only things that I save to Evernote that haven't already been listed are:

  • Movie ticket stubs (Why not)
  • Website Screenshots (this way i have an archive of what the pages looked like in case they changed or no longer exist.)
  • YouTube favorites (Set up a ifttt tasks to automatically make a note whenever I favorite a YouTube video, because it is easier to look it up in Evernote)
  • Newsletters (I get a ton of newsletters in my e-mail, so i send them all to Evernote)
  • Quotes (from books, magazine, speeches, etc.)

The record of my life.

If I take the time to stop and read something I (Article/Clearly) clip it.

If I work on something, I journal it.

If I have to find something in the "real" world, I try to add something to Evernote.

If I have to frequently find similar things, I take the time to organize them for efficient search in Evernote.

My stuff. For me.

Almost every web page I see online, whether I read, watch, or listen to the content.

That's a lot of pornography in your Evernote account if your links are getting hijacked like mine.

Well, Evernote encourages you to store Food © pr0n as well... (Surprised that wasn't mentioned yet!) (And no, that's not a typo.)

Well, in that case, Food & Tech pr0n of course, but, my real weakness is Bike Pr0n.

Cannondale (Bicycles). The essence of porn is unfulfilled lust. My budget ensures the unfulfilled part of it.

Bicycling magazine is the go-to magazine for bike porn, for me anyways. Certainly am having no problem with the lust part, as my road bike is now 7 years old, and I am wanting something better. Didn't help that my step-daughter's boyfriend just bought himself a Pinarello *jealous*. I am currently engaging in a long-term campaign to soften up the Finance Committee, but it may have to wait until 2013. Any number of brands would be fine...

Provocative. I wonder what it means when I have a bike I love (CAADX 6 Tiagra, among others), and no desire to purchase anything else, but still love to look at them. Is that lust?

Ummm. Art appreciation.

Sort of like Charles Boyer's character in Gigi.

Yeah. e.g. I have a lot of notes tagged either "bike, repair" or "bike, parts".

Oh really??? It may be too late already.

It can be a pretty geeky avocation, I admit. :) Ask my wife...

I hereby annex the "Outdoor Travel" forum for our needs. As it slowly fills with bicycle related content, it will have no choice but to change the flag it flies.

UPDATE:

Don't get Geoff started on cycling...

Oh! Oh! Mountain & urban exploration, right here. I have a small surprise coming in "I hope" early 2012. We'll see if I can find the time to tackle.
