ScanSnap S1300 on a Mac with Lion and EN. Any advice?

Do any of you have any advice for me? I’m about to buy a ScanSnap S1300 to use on a Mac Pro running Lion (v10.7.1). I’ve checked on Amazon. They have one with a bundle (for $290 http://amzn.to/pGI6jG) and without a bundle (for $253 http://amzn.to/qb7JNk) Amazon says only the bundle works on a Mac. The one without the bundle works only on PC.

I’ve read reviews on Amazon saying that Fujitsu doesn’t offer free upgrades on their software, but you have to buy a new scanner to get new(er) software. Correct? (Sounds terrible to me.)

Any advice for setting up this unit for scanning into Evernote? Any links online with tutorials or tips on this?

I bought an S1300 earlier this year when I still had a Windows machine. It worked flawlessly and I could set a 'watched' folder to scan to that went directly to EN. 2 weeks ago I bought a Mac, and upgraded to Lion. I downloaded the ScanSnap software from the Fujitsu website and it installed fine. Apparently there is no way to scan directly to EN on the Mac, which is a bit of a pain. You need to scan to a document folder, then drag the document to EN in a separate step. Hopefully they'll add the 'watched folder' option in the future.

Thanks to both of you, Ed and Michael, for your very helpful posts. :-)

Sorry to steer you the wrong direction initially. I seriously was told this wasn't possible, and had silently been cursing Apple/Evernote for messing with my workflow. All is now right with the world. Now if I could just figure out these darn keyboard shortcuts for the Mac.

@Beavis One excellent source for Apple/Mac info (including for your iPad) is http://www.takecontrolbooks.com/ I’ve bought literally dozens of titles from them. They are clear, easy to read, up-to-date. Often if they update them, you get that ebook for free or heavily discounted. I’ve never bought any which weren’t worth the price.

They would probably have one (or more) which go into common keyboard shortcuts for Macs. Looking over their listing right now (drop-down menu from the top right on their site), I see http://www.takecontrolbooks.com/mw-mac-basics which might meet your needs. If you want to check to make sure which book would have that info, you can email Tonya Engst: tc-comments@tidbits.com for help.

You might want to try the solution posted here:

for automatically getting notes from a particular folder into evernote

This is not exactly the same sort of functionality, right? in the windows version, evernote itself will track the files that have already been fed into evernote thus allowing you to always keep a copy of all the scanned files... this script is pretty much like a dropbox. Whatever you put in there will get sent to evernote and then moved into the trash... or am i wrong?

Before I divorced Windows I used the watched-folder system, which I thought worked well. I had everything go to an "unfiled" folder, where I coded the notes and moved them to the appropriate notebook.

On the Mac, I've come to appreciate ScanDrop. My Scanscap 1500 scans directly to ScanDrop, and I can then code the note as I want, by changing the PDF's filename, manually choosing the notebook if I don't want the default, assigning tags and entering whatever text I want to appear above the scan. It takes a few seconds, but when I'm done I have a note that's completely coded. ScanDrop then uploads the note to Evernote and clears its desktop for the next scan.

I can also rotate, delete and reorder pages within the ScanDrop desktop. For example, if I scan a Walgreen's receipt I can leave the setting at duplex and then just delete the ads on the back side. If I want to add another scan to the file before uploading, it will do that as well.

ScanDrop is an Evernote trunk partner (under the name OfficeDrop, which encompasses other products and functions) and is on the Mac app store. Their support (in my case) has been good.

yeah, that feature is great, and it is available out-of-the-box!! I even had multiple "profiles" depending on the privacy level on the document that would mach local and synced folders and so on...

Can I possibly keep a local copy of the scanned pdf file? In the windows version, Evernot would keep track of the files that had been already imported thus enabling a local backup of all my scanned files. Before your suggestion I discovered yesterday this cool script http://veritrope.com/tech/evernote-desktop-folder/?replytocom=21412#comment-21436 which looks cool as well but needs some tweaking.

allright, I'm almost sold!! hehehe... Do you use ScanSnap scanners by any chance? what do I lose if I use ScanDrop rather than ScanSnap Manager?

very good tip indeed. I'll definitely take a look at it today because I'm eager to get back on top of things sitting in my in-basked after my Mac switch.

If I can manage to make a local copy of the scanned pdf file along the process, then I'm switching definitely!!

Thanks,

Since posting this thread, I’ve bought a ScanSnap S1300 with bundle (from Amazon). I’m still learning all its ins and outs.

One thing I did almost immediately was to install not just the software from CD (on my Mac running OS 10.7.1), but also the latest updates to that software. It seems to me as though the newest ScanSnap Manager includes two profiles already for Evernote doc or note. :-) (I’m guessing those weren’t included in earlier versions of ScanSnap Manager.)

Here’s the link to the latest software:
